State gives green light for herbicide spray on Cape Cod

NSTAR on Friday received a green light from the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR) to begin its right-of-way herbicide spray plan along power lines across the Cape.
The same day the state was giving approval, local groups opposed to NSTAR's plan held a protest at the power company's headquarters on Willow Street in West Yarmouth.
Protect Our Cape Cod Aquifer (POCCA) in a poster advertising the protest said NSTAR was ready to start as soon as Monday, November 18. On Friday, NSTAR spokesman Michael Durand said the spray would not start until approval was received.
When asked yesterday if the spray would start on November 18 now that the state has approved NSTAR's 2013 Yearly Operational Plan for the Cape, Durand told CapeCodToday.com NSTAR was working with vendors to finalize the spray schedule.
Four hours later in an email, Durand said he received word that NSTAR decided to start the herbicide spray on Monday to take advantage of the weather.
With the "controlled application" underway, spraying along right-of-ways in Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Falmouth, Harwich, Orleans and Sandwich will continue as outlined in the operational plan.
