13 Were Exposed to Radiation at New Mexico Plant 27 Feb 2014 Thirteen workers at the nation's underground nuclear waste dump in southeastern New Mexico have tested positive for radiation exposure after a recent leak released toxic radioactive particles in and around the plant, officials announced. The accident is [allegedly] the first-known release of radiation since the dump near Carlsbad began taking plutonium-contaminated waste from the nation's nuclear bomb building sites 15 years ago. It came just nine days after a truck hauling salt in the plant's deep mines caught fire, but officials say they are confident the incidents are unrelated.

Kentucky Seeks Delay in Recognizing Same-Sex Marriage 27 Feb 2014 Kentucky's attorney general asked a federal judge on Thursday to delay by 90 days an order requiring the state to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and countries. The two-page filing says the delay is sought to give the attorney general time to decide whether to appeal the Feb. 12 ruling and would give the state an opportunity to prepare to implement the order. The request came as parties in the case awaited a final order from U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II overturning part of Kentucky's same-sex marriage ban.


Google Street View maps polar bear country 27 Feb 2014 You can now pay a virtual visit to wild polar bears on the tundra via Google Street View. The stunning tundra landscape of Cape Churchill and Wapusk National Park in Northern Manitoba -- polar bears and all -- went online today in honour of International Polar Bear Day. "I think the whole thing is going to be really exciting," said Krista Wright, executive director of the conservation group Polar Bears International, which partnered with Google on the project.
