Breaking: Australian deployment to Ukraine imminent --190 Australian troops on standby for deployment in Eastern Ukraine 25 July 2014 The federal government is close to finalising an agreement with the Ukrainian government, to deploy federal police officers to the MH17 crash site. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the deployment would include Australian Defence Force personnel alongside AFP officers. Some of the police officers may be armed and a further 100 are set to travel to Europe to join 90 who have already arrived in Europe.

Australian soldiers to back up police in securing Ukrainian site of MH17 crash --As well as backing up police, ADF personnel will help liaise with military elements from partner countries 25 July 2014 A small number of Australian soldiers will be deployed to back up police charged with 'securing' the crash site of MH-17 in Ukraine. Prime Minister Tony Abbott is expected to make the announcement at a press conference on Friday afternoon, Fairfax Media has learnt. The announcement follows the revelation on Thursday afternoon that 50 Australian Federal Police officers have flown to London awaiting deployment to Ukraine as part of an international force to secure the site...The number of Australian Defence Force soldiers is expected to be fewer than the number of police because of the sensitivity of placing military personnel so close to the border with Russia.

Obama administration sending military advisers to Ukraine within weeks 23 Jul 2014 The United States is reportedly preparing to send a team of military advisers into Ukraine to assist with revamping forces there in the midst of the ongoing crisis between government-loyal troops and an anti-Kiev militia. On Tuesday this week, the Washington Times reported that a spokesperson for the US Department of Defense confirmed plans to put Pentagon advisers in Ukraine. The newspaper says that Army Col. Steve Warren, a spokesperson for the Pentagon, told the Times that the objective of sending DoD advisers overseas is to "shape and establish an enduring program for future US efforts to support the Ukrainian military through subject-matter expert teams and long-term advisers."
