Cartoon: Another Toyota Recall

Cartoon: Another Toyota Recall

Toyota cartoon
BACKGROUND
Toyota is recalling more than 6.5m cars worldwide to fix a variety of problems, including faulty steering wheels and seats. The company said there had been no reported accidents or injuries relating to the problems identified. Some 27 Toyota models are affected, including the Corolla, RAV4, Hilux, Yaris, Tacoma, Urban Cruiser and Scion xD. The global recall tally is a huge blow to the world's biggest selling carmaker that has seen its reputation battered by a string of damaging recalls. Since early 2012, the company has recalled around 20m vehicles and sold 18.7m. Full story >>
THE CARTOON
The cartoon by Kipper Williams from The Guardian shows a woman driving a Toyota car. She complains to her companion, "It keeps directing me back to the dealer" ("it" being the sat nav or satellite navigation system). The joke is that there have been so many Toyota recalls that the sat nav is programmed to return the car to the dealer.

VOCABULARY1. A dealer is a person whose business is buying and selling a particular product (such as cars). • He's a dealer in second-hand cars.2. To recall is to ask for something to be returned, often because there is something wrong with it. • The company has recalled all the faulty hairdryers. Recall can also be a noun. • Hundreds of machines are still in use in spite of a recall by the manufacturers.
