U.S. Army preparing to deploy division headquarters to Iraq 23 Sept 2014 For the first time since the U.S. 'withdrew' from Iraq in 2011 the U.S. Army is preparing to deploy a division headquarters to Iraq. An official announcement is expected in the next few days. Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno has said the Army "will send another division headquarters to Iraq to control what we're doing there, a small headquarters." The division headquarters being sent to Iraq is expected to be responsible for coordinating the 1,600 troops President Obama has sent there.

Air war in Syria could last years 23 Sept 2014 The U.S.-led airstrikes mounted Monday and early Tuesday in Syria are the opening salvo of what is likely to be a years-long campaign to rout al-Qaeda[al-CIAduh]-linked terrorists and Islamic State fighters from the war-torn country, according to military leaders. Bombing runs in Syria will continue into the foreseeable future, Defense Department officials said. After initial strikes in Syria, U.S. warplanes returning to their home base blasted two trucks, U.S. Central Command reported in a statement.

The US and its partners used "a mix of fighter and remotely piloted aircraft to conduct 13 of airstrikes against 12 ISIL-controlled modular oil refineries located in remote areas of eastern Syria in the vicinity of Al Mayadin, Al Hasakah, and Abu Kamal and one ISIL vehicle near Dayr az Zawr, also in eastern Syria," read a statement by CENTCOM.

Australian police shoot dead 'known terror suspect' 24 Sept 2014 Police in Melbourne have shot dead a "known terror suspect" who stabbed two officers, a day after the Islamic State group called for Muslims to indiscriminately kill Australians, said officials. The 18-year-old, whose passport was cancelled a week ago on security grounds, was killed on Tuesday evening, having arrived at a police station on the outskirts of the city to attend a "routine" interview. No bomb found at nuclear power plant after threat - MCSO 25 Sept 2014 Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies have given the all-clear after responding to a bomb threat at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station west of Phoenix. The large administration building was evacuated and sheriff's deputies responded after a threat was called into the power plant around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The sheriff's office had about 15 units on scene.

Sierra Leone says 300 sick or dead found in Ebola lockdown 24 Sept 2014 Sierra Leone said around 100 bodies and 200 patients had been collected from homes during its three-day lockdown to stem the deadly Ebola epidemic raging in west Africa. Brigham and Women's nurses sue over flu shot mandate --Nurses' union: Shot is ineffective 50 to 60 percent of the time 25 Sept 2014 The Massachusetts Nurses Association sued Brigham and Women's Hospital this week, seeking to block a policy not yet in effect that would require nurses to get flu shots if they want to keep working there. The Massachusetts Nurses Association, the union representing 3,200 nurses at the Brigham, said in its lawsuit that the hospital's mandate, which could lead to the firing of employees who refuse vaccination, violates a state regulation that explicitly bars hospitals from requiring employees to the receive vaccine if they don't want it, regardless of the reason.

Attorney General Eric Holder Resigns 25 Sept 2014 President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder formally announced Holder's intention to resign on Thursday afternoon in a joint and at times emotional appearance at the White House. In saluting Holder, the president hailed a close personal friend that he called "the people's lawyer." Huntsville schools say call from NSA led to monitoring students online 24 Sept 2014 (AL) A secret program to monitor students' online activities began quietly in Huntsville schools, following a phone call from the NSA, school officials say. Huntsville schools Superintendent Casey Wardynski says the system began monitoring social media sites 18 months ago, after the National Security Agency tipped the school district to a student making violent threats on Facebook. The Huntsville monitoring program is called SAFe, or Students Against Fear. School board members said they did not know about the program when contacted last week.

Hundreds of Colorado students protest history curriculum changes that would promote patriotism 24 Sept 2014 Hundreds of students walked out of classrooms around suburban Denver on Tuesday in protest over a conservative-led school board proposal to focus history education on topics that promote citizenship, patriotism and respect for authority, in a show of civil disobedience that the new standards would aim to downplay. The youth protest in the state's second-largest school district follows a sick-out from teachers that shut down two high schools in the politically and economically diverse area that has become a key political battleground. The proposal comes from an elected board with three conservative members [sociopaths] who took office in November.

Police arrest polar bear at a rally against global warming 23 Sept 2014 More than 100 people, including a man in a polar bear suit, were arrested yesterday after refusing to leave a protest against climate change global warming in New York. In a demonstration dubbed 'Flood Wall Street', around 1,000 protesters marched through the financial district of New York City to draw attention to businesses which they argued funded climate change global warming. It followed an international day of action, said to be the largest protest ever held on climate change global warming.

Earthquake shakes Anchorage, Alaska, measuring 6.2 magnitude 25 Sept 2014 An earthquake registering a preliminary 6.2 magnitude was centered 81 miles northwest of Anchorage, Alaska, Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. "It was kind of a long one," Anchorage Police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro told CNN...The USGS detected the earthquake at 9:51 a.m. local time with an epicenter in a remote area of southern Alaska, according to the initial report.
