I first met Bernie when he was running for mayor of Burlington. At the time, I was working at a youth center and had arranged a meeting between low-income citizens' groups and the incumbent mayor.
When I started asking questions about what our city was doing to help children and families, the mayor replied, "Now, you sound like Bernie Sanders."
Well, I had to meet this Bernie character.
So we organized a debate and that was when I heard Bernie speak for the first time. I fell in love with his ideas right then and there, and soon after, I fell in love with Bernie himself. It's been an amazing 35 years at each other's sides, building our family and working together for fairness and equity for working families.
Even though we're a long way from the Burlington mayor's race, I know that the passion with which Bernie approaches the issues that matter hasn't changed one bit. It's just that now he's running for president, and the whole country gets to participate in this political revolution.
Bernie's birthday is Tuesday, September 8th. We're asking his supporters to sign his birthday card and share birthday wishes with him.
As Bernie and I travel the country, it's so inspiring to see the dedication and enthusiasm of the supporters of our campaign. I know he would love to hear from you on his birthday.
Sincerely,
Jane O'Meara Sanders
