The Nation: Challenging GOP Lies

Help Us Challenge the GOP’s Lies

Last night’s GOP debate was yet another reminder of rule number one for politicians talking about immigration policy: Lie about border security. As Julianne Hing writes today, the United States spends more time, money, and personnel on border security than ever before. You wouldn’t know it.

Both GOP debates have been packed with demonstrable lies about immigration—and already, those distortions are both shaping policy and spurring hate crimes.

That’s why we urgently need your help to put Julianne on the immigration beat throughout this election cycle.

To date we have raised 18 percent of our goal for funding Julianne’s reporting. Thanks to this fantastic start, Julianne was able to fact-check last night’s debate—something we predictably didn’t get from CNN or Fox moderators and anchors. But we desperately need your help this week to keep this effort going.

Remember that every dollar donated will be doubled thanks to a match challenge from Beacon!
When I met Julianne six years ago, she wasn’t sure she wanted to be a journalist. We are all lucky that she ultimately chose this work. Whether dissecting the explosive politics of immigration or uncovering the profiteering side of so-called education reform, her reporting is always shaped by those most directly impacted. It is a unique and valuable departure from typical political journalism.

America is in the middle of dramatic demographic changes—we’re not just wrestling with policy, but with our national identity. Julianne is the perfect reporter to chronicle that difficult process.

With your support, Julianne will tell us the stories of people living and fighting for a new America—and she’ll challenge the dishonest rhetoric that dominates our immigration debate.

Sincerely,
Kai Wright
