Outspoken Pilgrim nuclear opponent Paul Rifkin will have his day in court next week. Rifkin was arrested on May 10, 2015 (Mother's Day) at a protest rally at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth. It was Rifkin's third arrest at the facility during what has become an annual Mother's Day anti-nuclear rally over the past several years.
Rifkin is set to appear in Plymouth District Court on Tuesday, February 2. He is the only defendant and will be facing trespassing charges. In May 2013, Rifkin was part of a group of protestors arrested at the plant. During the 2014 trial, Rifkin and his fellow defendants were found guilty and sentenced to a day in jail with time served. The year before, charges were dropped against Rifkin and the other protestors at the trial following their arrest.
If he is found guilty the third time around, Rifkin may not be so lucky and could face up to a year in jail.
In a statement, Rifkin said he has the support of two civil liberties attorneys, Jeff Feuer and Benji Hiller, who have reportedly suggested that Rifkin represent himself at the hearing on Tuesday.
Two community leaders will speak on Rifkin's behalf. Reverend Nell Fields of the Waquoit Congregational Church will testify as a character witness. State Senator Dan Wolf (D-Harwich) will also speak on Rifkin's behalf. Wolf is also a diehard Pilgrim protestor.
The hearing is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the Plimoth District Court House on Obery Street.
