BOURNE - A malnourished dog is on the mend after being rescued by Bourne police officers Monday. According to a Bourne police release, officers and detectives recognized a stolen dirt bike at a home in Buzzards Bay. The bike had been reported stolen several months earlier. As officers confirmed the found bike was indeed the one reported stolen, a second stolen dirt bike was located at the same property.
During the investigation, police found the dog in a home at an adjacent property. The home, which was an abandoned foreclosure, was being used by 19-year-old Kanen Sears. According to police, Sears was keeping the malnourished dog in the home. The house had no heat and was filled with urine and excrement, the release said.
Although there was a food bowl in the house, there was no food in sight, police said. It appeared that the dog was so hungry, it had started to eat the food bowl.
Sears was arrested and transported to the Bourne Police Station where he was booked and charged with two counts of receiving stolen property greater than $250 and animal cruelty. He was later transported to Falmouth District Court for arraingment.
The dog, Xavier, was turned over to the Bourne Department of Natural Resources.
