Secretive cabal of GOP operatives, conservative leaders meet to deny Trump presidential nomination--Koch-owned Republican Sen. Ben Sasse named as possible 'late entry' nominee | 17 March 2016 | A secretive group of Republican operatives and conservative leaders convened Thursday morning for more than three hours to discuss ways to unite the right against Donald Trump, with a presentation about the feasibility of mounting a third-party challenge as well as extensive deliberations about whether a coalition of anti-Trump forces could prevent the businessman from securing the party's presidential nomination at the July convention in Cleveland...A bloc of participants argued that the best option may be working in upcoming primaries to boost Cruz and prevent Trump from securing a majority of delegates. A convention standoff would be the culmination of those efforts, the people said.

RNC member: 'Political parties choose their nominee, not the general public' | 16 March 2016 | Curly Haugland, a Republican National Committee member, says the nomination process is pretty straightforward: The party, not the voters, chooses the nominee. In an appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday morning, Haugland, a North Dakotan and current member of the RNC's Rules Committee, said that any assumption otherwise is misguided. "That's the problem: The media has created the perception that the voters will decide the nomination," he said. He went on: "Political parties choose their nominee, not the general public, contrary to popular belief."

The NYPD confirmed to ABC News it responded to a call at Trump Parc East, a high-end residential building on Central Park South -- but it did not identify the recipient of the mail as Donald Trump's 32-year-old son, who has an apartment in the building. The Trump Organization source, however, confirmed the letter was indeed sent to the Trump offspring's 14th floor apartment.
Trump warns of riots if he is denied Republican presidential nomination | 16 March 2016 | U.S. Republican front-runner Donald Trump warned on Wednesday of riots if he is denied the party's presidential nomination after a string of primary election victories, raising the temperature even more in a heated White House race...Trump might fall short of the majority [of 1,237 convention delegates] required, enabling the party's establishment to put forward another name at the July convention in Cleveland to formally pick its candidate. In an interview with CNN on Wednesday, Trump said the party could not deny him the nomination should he fail to win enough delegates. "I don't think you can say that we don't get it automatically. I think you'd have riots. I think you'd have riots. I'm representing many, many millions of people."

Obama nominates Merrick Garland to Supreme Court | 16 March 2016 | President Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, who is respected across political lines, to the Supreme Court Wednesday, in an epic power play targeting the resolve of Republicans who have vowed to block any replacement for the late Justice Antonin Scalia until a new president takes office. GOP leaders, caught in the undertow of an election in which the conservative grass-roots are already in revolt, immediately renewed their refusal to consider Garland, 63, saying their reservations were not personal but motivated by a desire for the American people to weigh in on Scalia's replacement.

Sanders calls notion he should quit Democratic race 'absurd' | 18 March 2016 | Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, responding to reports President Barack Obama called on Democrats to rally around Hillary Clinton as the likely nominee, said on Thursday it was "absurd" to suggest he drop out of the race. Obama privately told a group of Democratic donors last Friday that Sanders was nearing the point at which his campaign against Clinton would end, and that the party must soon come together to back her, the New York Times reported. Sanders, a Vermont senator and self-proclaimed democratic socialist, while saying he did not want to comment directly on Obama's reported remarks, pushed back on the idea that his campaign had run its course and he should throw in the towel.

Bernie Sanders concedes Missouri Democratic primary | 17 March 2016 | Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he will not seek a recount of results in Missouri's Democratic primary, conceding defeat to Hillary Clinton. Sanders says in an interview with The Associated Press that it's unlikely the results will affect the awarding of delegates in the state and he would "prefer to save the taxpayers of Missouri some money." Clinton has a narrow lead of 1,531 votes, but under state law Sanders could have sought a recount because the margin was less than one-half of one percent.

Clinton defeats Sanders in Florida, Ohio and 2 other states | 16 March 2016 | Hillary Clinton rolled up primary victories in four states - Florida, Ohio, Illinois and North Carolina - and dealt a severe blow Tuesday to Bernie Sanders's hopes of denying her the Democratic presidential nomination. Hillary Clinton Sweeps Ohio, Illinois, and Missouri | 16 March 2016 | Hillary Clinton won all three Midwestern primaries Tuesday night, widening the gap between herself and Bernie Sanders and inching closer to the Democratic nomination. Just before 9 p.m. Eastern, several outlets reported that Clinton had defeated Sanders by a wide margin in Ohio...Meanwhile, the Associated Press and other outlets called the race in Illinois just after 12 a.m. Eastern. Clinton's victory there was narrower; with 97 percent of precincts reporting, she was only ahead by one point. But Clinton's victory in Missouri was the most tenuous, coming down to fewer than 2,000 votes.

Donald Trump Takes 3 States; John Kasich Wins Ohio | 15 March 1016 | Donald J. Trump rolled to victory in the Republican presidential primaries in Florida, Illinois and North Carolina on Tuesday, driving Senator Marco Rubio from the race and amassing a formidable delegate advantage that will be exceedingly difficult for any rival to overcome. But with a victory in Ohio, his home state, Gov. John Kasich denied Mr. Trump one of the night's biggest prizes and made it harder for him to clinch the nomination outright before primary voting ends in June. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas finished second in Illinois and North Carolina and was locked in a tight race with Mr. Trump in Missouri, ensuring that he, too, would earn a share of delegates.

Marco Rubio Suspends His Presidential Campaign | 15 March 2016 | Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who ran for president offering his youthful optimism and Cuban-American heritage as the embodiment of a new and more diverse generation of Republican leadership, but ultimately failed to galvanize voters in a much darker mood, said on Tuesday that he was suspending his presidential campaign. Mr. Rubio made the announcement during a speech at his campaign headquarters in Miami after losing his home state by a large margin to Donald J. Trump. Mr. Rubio, 44, was felled by many of the same forces that drove other contenders from the race: a deep anger at the Republican leadership, a level of mistrust among the party's most motivated voters, a field of candidates splitting up the vote, and an inability to stop Mr. Trump from exploiting all those factors.
