CounterCurrents: Resist ! Rebel! Build Solidarity, Antarctic Tipping Points For A Multi-Metre Sea Level Rise
Why do I have to be a gloom and doom monster everyday! Couldn't I say something pleasant? Something hopeful? I would like to. But each passing day.... bring us as the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists predict closer to "midnight". The other day they took the iconic Doomsday Clock by 30 seconds forward and set at just two and half minutes to midnight! Well, it seems gloom and doom is the order of the day. If you want some happy news better go read NYT,WashPo,WSJ,Forbes or Economist that tell the happy go lucky life of billionaires!
New studies suggest that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), comprising more than two million cubic kilometres of ice, is under pressure from a warming climate, with scientists saying its break-up –– and an eventual global sea-level rise of 3–5 metres –– is not matter of if, but when.
Oh, on top of that as Priti Gulati Cox suggests "India's got no cash and America's got Trump". Both are sowing seeds of peril, when the farmers have no seed to sow. On Mexico border, against Muslims and immigrants, and even against ordinary Americans who protested at his inauguration, that included journalists too.
Trump fans used to say he would bring peace to the world. As far as his pronouncements and actions so far testify the world is becoming a more dangerous place. China has retorted the Trump administrations bellicose posture on South China Sea.
As I always say, it's a Titanic moment in history. As Priti Gulati Cox again suggests it's not the time to 'adjust' but to resist, rebel and build solidarity.
And also more stories from around the world.
If you don't mind, and if you think the content of this news letter is critical for the dignified living and survival of humanity and other species on earth, please forward it to your friends and spread the word. Doomsday Clock Now Two And A Half Minutes To Midnight
by Deirdre Fulton
The symbolic Doomsday Clock inched closer to midnight on Thursday, and we have President Donald Trump largely to thank for the ominous development. At the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Thursday morning, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists‘ Science and Security Board moved the hands of the iconic clock 30 seconds closer to “midnight,” or the end of the world.
Antarctic Tipping Points For A Multi-Metre Sea Level Rise
by David Spratt
The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS), comprising more than two million cubic kilometres of ice, is under pressure from a warming climate, with scientists saying its break-up –– and an eventual global sea-level rise of 3–5 metres –– is not matter of if, but when.
Hundreds, Including Journalists, Charged With Rioting In Wake Of Inauguration Protest
by Genevieve Leigh
Two hundred and thirty-five people were arrested by police last Friday morning during protests in Washington D.C. at the inauguration of Donald Trump. The protests were described by participants as both “anti-capitalist” and “anti- fascist.” Those arrested, composed largely of politically unaffiliated individuals, were first surrounded and indiscriminately detained at the intersection of 11th and K Street. There riot police surrounded them for about an hour. During this time police and higher officials apparently deliberated among themselves before carrying out mass arrests.

by Niles Niemuth
US President Donald Trump declared in an extended interview with ABC News broadcast Wednesday that he will sign an executive order directing authorities to implement US controlled “safe zones” in Syria. The order would also block the entry of refugees and immigrants from a number of majority Muslim countries, including Syria.
Breakdown In Mexico-US Relations As Trump Threatens Trade War
by Eric London
On Wednesday Donald Trump announced the construction of a wall along the US’s southern border, provoking a diplomatic crisis without precedent in the modern history of US-Mexico relations. When Trump repeated his ultimatum that Mexico pay for the cost of construction, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto cancelled a visit to the White House that had been planned for January 31.
Australia Day Is Invasion Day: Will Australia Join A Trump US War On China?
by Dr Gideon Polya
Racist White Australia celebrates Australia Day on Invasion Day, the anniversary of the British invasion of Australia on 26 January 1788 and commencement of the ongoing Aboriginal Genocide. Australia has invaded 85 countries, has participated in all post-1950 US Asian wars, and as a US lackey is currently helping the serial war criminal US invade 7 impoverished Muslim countries. China is Australia’s largest trading partner but US lackey Australia may join a lunatic Trump US war on China over the South China Sea.

by Colin Todhunter
“The British Government has colluded with Monsanto and should be held accountable in the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity and ecocide.” Dr Rosemary Mason.
White Silence Equals Violence: Awaiting A Verdict
by Kathy Kelly
This morning, here in Minneapolis, six jurors decided beyond a reasonable doubt that I am guilty as charged and my co-defendant, Dan Wilson was found innocent. The court case stems from an action protesting the execution of Jamar Clark, age 24, who died in the early morning of November 15, 2015 outside a north Minneapolis apartment complex. Two Minneapolis police officers, Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, were involved in the shooting. Jamar Clark died after a bullet was fired directly into his head. Several witnesses say that he was handcuffed and motionless when he was shot dead. The police officers have been cleared of all charges and are back on the job.
Blindness At Davos
by S G Vombatkere
It is essentially an annual jamboree to bring together many hundreds of extremely rich and powerful top business magnates, international political leaders, selected intellectuals, and journalists from around 100 countries, “to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world”. WEF focuses on business profit and national economic benefit.
Brexit And The UK Supreme Court
by Dr Binoy Kampmark
In upholding the decision of the lower court Parliament, deemed the sovereign voice of the UK, was again affirmed as ultimate arbiter, the historical figure of force that cannot be bypassed. This flies well and truly in the face of the semi-authoritarian May, who has used Brexit as alibi and deflector in asserting the state’s famed prerogative powers.
The Paris Peace Conference: Signaling An End To A Western-Dominated Era?
by Dr Ramzy Baroud
But what are we to make of the Paris Conference? It was a sad display of a final French-European-American attempt at showing relevance in a region that has vastly changed, in a ‘process’ that existed on paper only, in a political landscape that has become too complicated and diverse for the likes of Francois Hollande (an ardent supporter of Israel, to begin with) to matter in the least. No, it was not just ‘another Middle East peace conference’, but an end of an era. The American era in the Middle East.
In Less Than 30 Years Obama Will Be Tried For Millions Of Unlawful Deaths In A Court Of A New UN
by Jay Janson
If former President Obama lives to a healthy elderly age in more harmonious world than today’s, in all probability he will face trial for a million unlawful deaths, injuries, deformities, and mega destruction. Ex US Attorney General Ramsey Clark reminds us that the Nuremberg Principles of International Law long enshrined in the UN Charter, are by Article Six of the US Constitution, an integral part of the law of the land.
11/8: America’s Got President & India’s Got No Cash
by Priti Gulati Cox
There is a polite saying people use in India when asking you to accommodate an inconvenience: “Could you kindly adjust?” Those words have doubtless been heard millions of times in India’s banks and shops in the weeks since notebandi. But the crises that arose in India and America on November 8 are far more than inconveniences, and, no,please, let us not adjust to them. Let’s rebel
Republic Day, Sovereignty And The Youth
by Dr Prem Singh
The youth must understand that a nation which cedes its svereignty can never become a superpower. They can attempt the difficult visualization that in the neoliberal order, private enterprizes will also have their tableaus in the Republic Day parade in future. The 100% foreign/ private investment in Defense will also have an imprint on the parade. They must think if it is acceptable to them? Will they want a share in the neo-imperialist/neoliberal nation? Or will they carry out their responsibilities in the sovereign Indian nation? The nation’s sovereignty can only be saved if the nation’s youth resolve to save it with new preparedness and understanding.
#BeTheChange: It Is About Growing In Years, Not About Getting Old!
by Shobha Shukla
As fertility rates decline and life expectancy increases, the number of senior citizens is growing globally. Among the 7.3 billion people worldwide in 2015, an estimated 617.1 million, were aged 65 years or more. The Asia Pacific region is ageing rapidly and South-East Asia’s elderly numbers are growing fast at around 5% a year – between now and 2030 there will be nearly 20 million more people aged 60 and above in the region.
