CounterCurrents: Freedom @70. What About The "72"?

Dear Friend,

As I write this, India would be waking up to 70 years of freedom from the British imperislists.

For vast majority of Indians freedom is still a chimera. For instance, for the 72 kids who died in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh for lack of oxygen in emergency ward, what is the meaning of freedom? Ra Sh writes  a heart wrenching poem called "72" with an equally compelling cartoon by Pradeep.

K.P Sasi takes a different, but equally compelling look at the level of freedom in India. There are many other articles on different layers of freedom in India.

Also more stories from around the world.

I hate to say it, but I have to say it to save CC, our fund raising is going slow. Please lend a helping hand to keep CC survive http://www.countercurrents.org/subscription/

72
by Ra Sh

This Day,
72 infants sounded the bugles.
72 infants hoisted the flag.
72 infants saluted the flag.
72 infants formed the infantry.

Murder In The Hospital
by Nivedita Dwivedi

Into the permanent state of silence though they have now been forced to enter,
This deafening silence will continue to haunt us forever.
For there is no place to run from one’s conscience,
No place that will be able to provide, even for a second, any shelter.

Apathy In Public Healthcare Causes Loss Of 72 Children’s Life
by Mousumi Roy

This is another tragedy that once again reflects the sordid state of hospitals and health care through out India. News of deaths coming from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh is spiralling on a daily basis and that too from just one hospital viz. BRD Hospital, the government-run hospital of the city. It is the only hospital with reasonable faciliities in a 300-km radius and treats encephalitis patients from Gonda, Basti districts, Terai region in Nepal and eastern districts of Bihar. No State can be shown as a model. Like the farmers, the children of the poor in the India are totally neglected. 70 years of our growth of free India is yet to reach them.

India’s Mournful Song Of Freedom
by Moin Qazi

Most of us who lead lives of privilege tend to take freedom for granted. On the edge of our own realities are those that can’t.

On Independence Day Leaders Of Narmada Bachao Andolan To Remain In Jail
by National Alliance of People’s Movements

Medha Patkar, Dhurji Bhai, Vijay Bhai, Santu Bhai have completed five days in different jails of Madhya Pradesh today. All these fabricated cases have been imposed so that movement against the illegal and unjust forced eviction of 40000 families in the Narmada Valley can be crushed.

Can We Be Proud Of Such Independence? - Video

Almost 2 decades after Medha composed this song, it has never been more relevant than today. A song, which makes us think about our independent India.

India Celebrates Democracy, Kashmir Cries Hypocrisy
by Priti Gulati Cox

India, you will be celebrating your 70th year of Independence from British rule on August 15. All over the country all of you will be remembering the fallen, hoisting flags, and singing songs of freedom. Meanwhile in Indian-administered Kashmir — the largest militarized zone in the world — the Indian state and its military and paramilitary forces will continue to carry on with their sustained human rights abuses aimed at the regions indigenous population.

Independence Must Be Earned
by Mirza Yawar Baig

But today in India we have accepted the slavery of discrimination against each other, of corruption and of mutual hatred. It’s not the politicians who are corrupt. They are the visible symbols of our entire society which is corrupt and finds nothing wrong in being corrupt. What we accept as a defining feature of our identity, we will never fight against or try to change.

The Brewing Revolution In India
by Anuj Wankhede

It is not JantarMantar or Azad Maidan in Delhi or Mumbai alone. From megapolis to cities to towns and villages, there is a strong resistance to fascism. It has built up and gathered momentum.

Hezbollah And Syrian Army Finishing Off Terrorists Of Al-Nusra
by Andre Vltchek

More than 150 militants were killed. Two dozen Hezbollah fighters lost their lives. Despite the difficult mountainous terrain, the battle was swift, heroic and well coordinated. The group was forced into accepting a ceasefire agreement, which went into effect on 27 July, and which stipulates that all of its fighters will be transferred by the army to a designated area inside Syria (Idlib).

Review: “Rationalism” by Brian Ellis
by Dr Gideon Polya

“Rationalism. A critique of pure theory” by Brian Ellis contrasts the  scientifically and socially productive rationalism of mathematics and physics based on valid a priori assumptions with the social, economic, and environmental failure of neoliberalism (economic rationalism) that is based on flawed assumptions. Rather than discard a failed model, the politically dominant One Percenter beneficiaries of neoliberalism have destructively reverse engineered society to make it fit a flawed theory that must be urgently discarded.

Money Laundering in Chief: Scandal at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

Over the last few weeks, AUSTRAC has had little time for that audacity.  The financial intelligence agency and regulator had picked up on suspicious transactions made through the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s “intelligence deposit machines” numbering over 53,000 and exceeding the legal $10,000 limit.    The machines in question were part of a CBA modernisation scheme, involving 40 new deposit ATMs that would permit the register of cash deposits in real time

What’s The Real Plan Behind Trump’s Fire And Fury For North Korea?
by Dr Arshad M Khan

It has been a week of barking out military options, a week of ‘everything is on the table’,  a week of threats no longer veiled.  Not an example of ‘cool as a cucumber’, rather a red-face turning to purple with the intensity of the phrasing.
