Progressive Breakfast: Land Taken From Freed Slave's Descendants for Amazon Data Center?

MORNING MESSAGE

Richard Eskow
Land Taken From Freed Slave’s Descendants for Amazon Data Center?
Land passed down from a freed slave should not be seized to enrich a giant corporation. That's what's happening in Haymarket, Virginia, where descendants of Livinia Johnson are being forced to hand over family land so Amazon can build a new data center.

Bipartisan Health Hearings

Senate to hold bipartisan health committee hearings. CNN:“Several Republican and Democrat lawmakers agree that Congress needs to prevent a collapse of the health insurance market, which could hurt millions of consumers – and that concern has opened up some bipartisan dialogue. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, said the Senate health committee will hold bipartisan health care hearings on how to repair the individual market. In the House, a group of 40 lawmakers from both parties endorsed an outline of ideas aimed at making urgent fixes to Obamacare. The step toward bipartisanship on health care comes as some Republicans consider an approach that diverges from the president’s stance.”

Debt Ceiling Impasse

Debt-ceiling talks between White House, Senate break up with no progress. WaPo:“Talks between the White House and the Senate’s top Republican and Democrat broke up Tuesday with no progress on raising the country’s debt ceiling, an impasse that threatens a financial crisis if left unresolved. The Senate and House have 12 joint working days before Sept. 29, when the Treasury Department says it would no longer be able to pay all of the government’s bills unless Congress acts. A default would likely set off a major disruption to the world financial system, with a stock market crash and surging interest rates that could send the economy into a recession.”

Senate’s McConnell Acknowledges Tax Cuts Serve Rich

McConnell says no to bipartisan tax reform. New York Magazine:“McConnell announced tonight that… he has no intention of working with Democrats, and will instead try to assemble 51 Republican votes for a reconciliation bill… that means, by process of elimination, that the unacceptable condition is the Democrats’ insistence that tax reform not give rich people a net tax cut… Republicans have been talking about eliminating deductions and reform the tax code. Some of them have even said they aren’t going to give rich people a tax cut. But that is because cutting taxes for rich people is extremely unpopular, and they don’t want to come out and say they’re doing something unpopular. But that is the plan, and McConnell has given the game away.”

Justice Dept. Sets Sights on Affirmative Action

Justice Dept. may turn civil rights enforcement against Affirmative Action. NYT:“The Trump administration is preparing to redirect resources of the Justice Department’s civil rights division toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants, according to a document obtained by The New York Times. The document, an internal announcement to the civil rights division, seeks current lawyers interested in working for a new project on ‘investigations and possible litigation related to intentional race-based discrimination in college and university admissions.'”

Trump Disinformation Campaign in High Gear

Suit says Fox, Trump supporter made up story with White House knowledge. NPR:“The Fox News Channel and a wealthy supporter of President Trump worked in concert under the watchful eye of the White House to concoct a story about the death of a young Democratic National Committee aide, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The explosive claim is part of a lawsuit filed against Fox News by Rod Wheeler, a longtime paid commentator for the news network.”
Team Trump’s pileup of fake conspiracies. Salon:“Fake conspiracies, it turns out, are Trump’s best weapon for hiding the actual conspiracy it looks like he or his staff actually engaged in ‘The landscape has basically been saturated with fairy tales, conspiracies and deliberate disinformation,’ Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters, explained to Salon. ‘When you have a large portion of the news cycle being consumed by a conversation around conspiracies, that people get fatigued.'”
