The Daily 202: Why Mark Zuckerberg is embracing more regulation of political ads on Facebook

The Daily 202: Why Mark Zuckerberg is embracing more regulation of political ads on Facebook

CONFLICTS OF INTEREST:
-- Lawyers for the Trump Organization wrote directly to Panama’s president last month asking for help in a legal fight connected to the company’s hotel in Panama City.

-- Attorney General Jeff Sessions turned to longtime GOP donor Elliott Broidy, who was convicted in 2009 for his role in a public corruption case, for recommendations on U.S. attorney appointments.

-- The acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics demanded that the EPA investigate Pruitt’s spending habits, housing arrangements and personnel decisions. Brady Dennis reports: “In a [letter, David J. Apol] took the atypical step of telling EPA officials that several recent ethics questions deserve further scrutiny … [citing actions including] Pruitt’s first-class travel expenses, round-the-clock security and steep salary increases that recently were granted to two top aides … He said Pruitt’s frequent trips to his home in Oklahoma, often at taxpayer expense, ‘raise concerns about whether the Administrator is using his public office for personal gain ...’ In addition, Apol wrote that reports that an aide at EPA helped shop for a house for Pruitt also may have been a misuse of his position. Apol called reports that Pruitt reassigned or demoted staff member who questioned his spending and other actions ‘extremely concerning.’ Apol said that his office “expects that EPA will review and analyze the alleged conduct …’ [and] ‘take appropriate action’ if it finds any violations. But it’s unclear how agency officials are likely to respond.”

-- Mike Pompeo has reached out to past secretaries of state – including Hillary Clinton – as he navigates the confirmation process. Politico’s Nahal Toosi reports: “As a sharply partisan Republican member of Congress, [Pompeo] tormented [Clinton] over her response to the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, which Pompeo called ‘morally reprehensible.’ He also once liked a tweet that branded her successor, John Kerry, a ‘traitor.’ But now that Pompeo faces a tough confirmation process to become secretary of state himself, he has reached out to Clinton and Kerry, as well as every other living occupant of the office, to ask for guidance. Clinton, for one, has been willing to help. … During their talk, Clinton advised Pompeo to stem the flight of career diplomats who quit under Tillerson, according to a person familiar with the call.”

-- Gina Haspel received the endorsement of more than 50 former national security officials and lawmakers to be the next CIA director. CNN’s Jennifer Rizzo reports: “Former directors of the CIA and national intelligence, secretaries of state and lawmakers who have chaired the Senate and House intelligence committees make up the list of signatories [in a letter sent Monday to the Senate Intelligence Committee]. The top intelligence officials include former CIA Directors John Brennan, Leon Panetta, Jose Rodriguez, George Tenet, Michael Hayden and former President Barack Obama's Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.” The letter does not address Haspel’s role in the CIA’s “enhanced interrogation” program, which will likely prove her greatest barrier to confirmation.

Law Enforcement Aided by Rick Scott Declaring State of Emergency Ahead of Richard Spencer Event

By Lori Rozsa and Susan Svrluga, The Washington Post
17 October 17

lorida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency Monday in anticipation of a speech by white nationalist Richard Spencer at the University of Florida.
Scott (R) warned in an executive order that a “threat of a potential emergency is imminent” in Alachua County, where the public university is located.
The order was intended to help with law enforcement agencies’ response to rallies planned for Thursday, the governor said in a news release. University of Florida officials said Monday afternoon that the order was not made in response to any specific heightened threat.
Spencer led hundreds of torch-bearing white supremacists, white nationalists and others on a march chanting, “You will not replace us” and “Jews will not replace us” at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in August. The group fought briefly with counterprotesters, and violence worsened the following day when a man drove a car into a crowd of people protesting a planned “Unite the Right” rally, killing a woman and injuring others.
A state of emergency was declared in Virginia after that violence.
In the days afterward, the University of Florida told Spencer he could not hold an event he had planned on campus. After his supporters and a lawyer questioned that decision on First Amendment grounds, the school allowed Spencer to schedule his speech and question-and-answer session for Thursday.
University officials have done extensive planning for the event and said they intend to spend $500,000 on security.
The governor’s executive order will allow local law enforcement officials to work with state and other agencies. Scott is also activating the Florida National Guard to help if needed.
“This worries me. I don’t get it,” Spencer said about Scott’s order. “I hope he’s doing this with good intentions.”
He said the order won’t change his plans. “I’m going to play ball,” Spencer said. “My people are in constant contact with security. We’re moving forward in good faith.”
Spencer said his followers won’t instigate violence. If altercations occur, he said, it will be because somebody else starts it.
“It’s these antifa groups,” Spencer said, referring to the anti-fascist movement. “They’re thugs. Nasty, nasty people.”
And he tweeted.
The University of Virginia was not well prepared for the march through its campus, according to a report released by the school last month.
Cameron Padgett, who has helped organize Spencer’s efforts to speak on college campuses, posted a video on social media in response to the governor’s executive order and explaining ticketing for the event Thursday.  VIDEO ON LINK

Scott said in a statement that he has been in constant contact with the Alachua County sheriff, who requested the order to ensure county and local law enforcement agencies have every available resource.
The governor called it an additional step to ensure that the University of Florida and Gainesville are prepared and that safety is maintained.
“We live in a country where everyone has the right to voice their opinion,” Scott said. “However, we have zero tolerance for violence, and public safety is always our number one priority.”
Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell said she had sought the declaration because of uncertainty surrounding what law enforcement will encounter.
The sheriff said she and the governor spoke several times over the weekend. “I pitched it to him and that it would help us a great deal to have that latitude,” Darnell said.
That includes allowing her to purchase more equipment quickly. Darnell said she wants to get more radios so all of the agencies involved — from campus police to the National Guard — can communicate.
“We have looked at what happened in Charlottesville and Berkeley,” Darnell said, referring to events in Virginia and at the University of California at Berkeley. “We’re not being alarmist. But we want to be prepared. ”

This, that, whatever.....

CITIZENS UNITED:

Think about it.

Please don't believe that's the sole problem.

1. The US has Corporate Media PROPAGANDA Machines and Fox News = Fakes News that brainwash and misinform.

2. US elections are RIGGED and voters are disenfranchised with Jim Crow Laws, voter purges, ID laws, shortening polling hours, relocating polling places, failing to provide adequate parking or access, voter intimidation, bogus electronic voting machines and a multitude of other fraudulent election tactics.

3. Dumbing down Americans because of under-funding, racial inequality, poverty and a multitude of other factors has created malleable masses that have no realistic concept about the function of government, nor are they capable of comprehending FASCISM because they have never been taught about history.

If most folks had a decent education, they wouldn't believe the bogus television commercials.

4. Income inequality and economic insecurity create a climate that's receptive to HATE.

Think about how Hitler successfully manipulated Germans.

When Germany was overburdened with War Reparations that impoverished the nation, folks readily accepted 'It's the fault of the Jews!'

Much the same may be said of the US today and Donald Trump's manipulation.

"You don't have a job because of ....."

If you can target a group that is easily recognizable from you, it's easier - a different skin color, a different garb, you get the point.

Karl Rove is a great student of History - so should we all be.
