Sam Brownback's Kansas financial meltdown: Republican Plan to destroy the economy

Kansas worst in nation in new Fed report

The Kansas Department of Commerce stopped producing this summer its quarterly economic report – a report that Gov. Sam Brownback established to measure the success of his economic policies. So how has the state been doing since then? Terribly, according to a new report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The Fed bank combines state statistics on nonfarm payroll employment, average hours worked in manufacturing by production workers, unemployment rate, and inflation-adjusted wages and salaries. Kansas’ change in this measurement from July to September was the worst in the nation. Maybe that’s why the Commerce Department stopped producing its report. – Phillip Brownlee

Gov LePage Gutting Head Start to Fund Tax Breaks for the Rich

In these hard economic times, billionaires should be giving to charity. They shouldn’t be asking for it from the government. But that’s what’s happening all across this country, and there’s no better example than right here in my home state of Maine.

Gov. LePage has been pushing Kentucky-style tax breaks for the rich all year. Despite repeated requests this session to explain how those tax breaks would be paid for, we were given no plan.

Until this week (at the end of session). His plan would cut Head Start funds for poor kids to fund a $10,000 income tax break for the rich. Yes, he is gutting Head Start so rich donors can get a $10,000 tax break.

While we focus a lot of attention on the shenanigans in Congress, bills are sweeping the states thanks to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) that gut education and give tax breaks to millionaires at the expense of the rest of us. This reverse Robin Hood phenomenon is increasing wealth inequality and preventing middle class families from achieving the American Dream.

Gov. Brownback already attempted to give away massive tax breaks to the rich in the “Kentucky Experiment!” In addition to schools closing early this year, Gov. Brownback is now proposing to raise taxes to fund the $400 million shortfall his tax breaks for the rich created. The experiment failed.

Despite this, Gov. LePage is dead set that we should eliminate the income tax outright, going so far as to fight for a constitutional amendment prohibiting it from being collected. And kids are caught in the line of fire.

Let’s take this viral! Please repost on social media!

Thank you for all you do!

MoJo: What's the Matter With Sam Brownback?

By Patrick Caldwell

One Wednesday afternoon in mid-August, Govs. Sam Brownback of Kansas and Chris Christie of New Jersey stopped for a photo op—and $54 worth of pork ribs and sausages—at Oklahoma Joe's, a gas station barbecue joint on the outer fringe of Kansas City. Along with hickory smoke and diesel fumes, there was a mild aroma of desperation in the air. Brownback's approval ratings hovered in the mid-30s, and one recent poll had his Democratic opponent, state House Minority Leader Paul Davis, beating him by 10 points. Now Christie, the chair of the Republican Governors Association, had parachuted in to lend some star power as Brownback made a fundraising swing through the wealthy suburbs outside of Kansas City. A day earlier, the RGA had announced a $600,000 ad buy in support of Brownback. "We believe in Sam," Christie assured the scrum of reporters who'd accompanied the governors to Oklahoma Joe's. Greg Abbott
It seems Greg Abbott, the Texas attorney general and Republican nominee for governor, is having second thoughts about debating Wendy Davis—and his campaign feels a need to lie about the details of those second thoughts:

There are times where if it wasn't real, it would be unbelievably funny... but since it is in fact, real, it is dire and sad.

Kansas appeals court Judge Caleb Stegall, a staunch abortion opponent critical of a landmark school-funding case, was named to the state’s high court on Friday by Gov. Sam Brownback.Brownback culminated Stegall’s meteoric rise through the judicial ranks less than a year after nominating his former legal counsel to a seat on the Kansas Court of Appeals. Brownback selected Stegall for the Kansas Supreme Court over fellow appeals court Judge Karen Arnold-Burger of Overland Park and District Judge Merlin Wheeler.
That's right. Someone with exactly one year on the bench has made a meteoric rise to the top of the legal profession in Kansas, and of course we know there have to be some fine credentials behind it.

Gibson writes: "Imagine making a bet with a hardline trickle-down believer like Paul Ryan on a state's projected economic growth. You would bet that one state that raised taxes on its richest residents would have unprecedented new job creation and a vastly improved economy, while Paul Ryan would bet that a state which cut taxes for the wealthy would have the better economy."
