The Kochs Worst Nightmares Come True As Bernie Sanders Smashes Fundraising Records

The presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders announced that they have set a new all-time record with more than 2.5 million donations from more than a million Americans in 2015.

The Sanders campaign broke down the data a statement:

The 2,513,665 donations to Sanders’ campaign broke the record set four years ago by President Barack Obama’s re-election committee. Through Dec. 31, 2011, Obama had chalked up 2,209,636 donations.

The more than 1 million donors to Sanders also is a milestone unmatched by any first-time White House candidate. Obama’s millionth donor in his 2008 campaign came on Feb. 27 of that election year. (In the next election cycle, the incumbent president’s re-election campaign hit the 1-million- donors mark on Oct. 17, 2011.)

Unlike other campaigns, small contributions made up the vast majority of all the money Sanders’ campaign raised. The average donation to Sanders during the past three months was $27.16.

All told, Sanders supporters gave $33,281,952 during the Federal Election Commission reporting period that ended at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Secretary Clinton’s campaign announced on Friday that she raised $37 million in the last quarter for use in the Democratic primary. The total for Sanders far surpassed donations in either of the previous two quarters of his eight-month long campaign and brought the fundraising total for 2015 to $72.8 million. Sanders ended the year with $28.4 million cash on hand.

Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver added, “This people-powered campaign is revolutionizing American politics,” said Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ campaign manager. “What we are showing is that we can run a strong, national campaign without a super PAC and without depending on millionaires and billionaires for their support. We are making history and we are proud of it.”

What is most impressive about the Sanders campaign is that they are keeping pace with the Hillary Clinton fundraising machine without super PACs or billionaires. Just before Christmas, both Democratic campaigns engaged in a bit of downplaying of expectations by telling supporters that the other side was going to raise more money.

It turns out that both campaigns raised enough money to make the Democratic primary a national contest.

The success of Bernie Sanders is the worst nightmare of the billionaires who are trying to buy our government with Citizens United-fueled dark money. Millions of ordinary Americans are rising and saying not this time to the corporations and billionaires. Sanders is demonstrating the Democrats don’t have to play in the dark money cesspool to be competitive.

The billionaires have the dollars, but it turns out that when regular Americans get organized and come together, they can get their message out one small donation at a time.

Sen. Sanders is making history, and he is changing the conventional wisdom about who candidates have to raise their money from to be successful.

There is something larger at stake than the Democratic nomination. Bernie Sanders has created a new fundraising model and in the process may deal a crippling blow to the Koch brothers and their right-wing billionaire buddies.

On September 19, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a Republican plan to cut $39 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Fox News defended the GOP's cuts -- which would result in nearly 4 million Americans losing or seeing a reduction in their benefits -- by pushing myths and misleading claims about both food stamps and the impact of the Republican cuts.

CLAIM: GOP's Food Stamp Cuts Won't Affect Children

Fox Regular Stephen Moore Falsely Claims That Cuts Wouldn't Hurt Children. On the September 20 edition of America's Newsroom, Wall Street Journal editorial board member and Fox regular Stephen Moore downplayed the proposed cuts, claiming that "families with children would not be affected by any of this." [Fox News, America's Newsroom, 9/20/13, via Media Matters]

FACT: Millions Of Families Will Be Negatively Affected By The Cuts

CBPP: Proposal Would Affect Millions Of Americans, Including Children. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities found that the proposal would leave 3.8 million people without benefits, many of whom are in low-income families. The bill would also limit schools meals for hundreds of thousands of children:

• 1.7 million unemployed, childless adults in 2014 who live in areas of high unemployment -- a group that has average income of only 22 percent of the poverty line (about $2,500 a year for a single individual) and for whom SNAP is, in most cases, the only government assistance they receive (this number will average 1 million a year over the coming decade);[4]
• 2.1 million people in 2014, mostly low-income working families and low-income seniors, who have gross incomes or assets modestly above the federal SNAP limits but disposable income -- the income that a family actually has available to spend on food and other needs -- below the poverty line in most cases often because of high rent or child care costs. (This number will average 1.8 million a year over the coming decade.) In addition, 210,000 children in these families would also lose free school meals;
• Other poor, unemployed parents who want to work but cannot find a job or an opening in a training program -- along with their children, other than infants.

FACT: Millionaires Receiving Benefits Would Be "Ridiculously Improbable"

USDA: Households Must Meet Certain Requirements To Receive Benefits "Including Resource And Income Tests." The Department of Agriculture (USDA), which oversees the food stamp program, explained that households must meet certain requirements to receive benefits "including resource and income tests." To qualify, households must have less than $3250 (which includes vehicles) in countable resources. [USDA, 7/25/13]

In November 2011, PolitiFact noted: "People above the income ceiling could certainly receive benefits under false pretenses, but doing so would be illegal. USDA: Fraud And Waste In The SNAP Program Is Roughly 1 Percent. According to the USDA, the fraud and waste rate in the program is roughly 1 percent:

CLAIM: Food Stamps Have Expanded Since Obama Took Office

Economic Policy Institute: "SNAP Swelled Because The Economy Entered the Worst Recession Since The Great Depression." According to the Economic Policy Institute, the food stamp rolls expanded due to the worst recession since the Great Depression. The EPI also notes that benefits keep 5 million Americans out of poverty and are "some of the most effective fiscal support available to help an economy that is projected to see unemployment rates above 8 percent until 2015." FACT: Food Stamp Enrollment Is Projected To Decline As The Economy Recovers

CBO: "The Number Of People Receiving SNAP Benefits Will Begin To Slowly Decline" As The Economy Recover. According to a 2012 report from the Congressional Budget Office, SNAP enrollment is projected to decline as the economy recovers:

The number of people receiving SNAP benefits will begin to slowly decline at the end of fiscal year 2014, CBO expects, reflecting an improved economic situation and a declining unemployment rate. Nevertheless, the number of people receiving SNAP benefits will remain high by historical standards, CBO estimates. Former Indiana Republican governor Mitch Daniels now president of Purdue University wants to manipulate education. While governor he appointed the board who appointed him president then they increased his pay as a reward for censoring what students can learn about history. I guess Republicans have had so much success manipulating the public through misinformation media like FOX News and Clear channel that corrupting education seemed like a good fit.

The best government that big money can buy is not a Democracy. Former Massachusetts senator Scott Brown will debut on Fox News Wednesday night, with an appearance on “Hannity.”

“Senator Brown’s dedication to out-of-the box thinking on key issues makes him an important voice in the country and we are looking forward to his contributions across all Fox News platforms,” Bill Shine, the network’s executive vice president of programming, said in a statement.

“I am looking forward to commenting on the issues of the day and challenging our elected officials to put our country’s needs first instead of their own partisan interests,” Brown added. It was reported last week that Brown was in talks with the network.

Brown’s arrival comes just as the network has shed two high-profile conservative commentators: former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and pollster Dick Morris.

The former lawmaker lost to Democrat Elizabeth Warren last fall, after winning his seat in the 2010 special election to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D). He recently decided not to run in a special election for the seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry.

Brown’s wife, Gail Huff, is a broadcast journalist.
