Where Does Bernie Sanders Stand on Israeli Settlements in the West Bank?

Policy Director, Just Foreign Policy

Where Does Bernie Sanders Stand on Israeli Settlements in the West Bank?

Posted:

I've gotten a fair bit of correspondence complaining that Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders hasn't said anything recently in support of the human rights of Palestinians.
Of course, Bernie Sanders isn't talking a lot about a lot of things that a lot of progressives wish he would talk more about. He's not talking about cutting the bloated Pentagon budget, though some in the media apparently think that he is.
(My theory for this media behavior is that if Sanders mentions how much we spend on the Pentagon or how the Pentagon wastes our tax dollars, in the context of talking about our crumbling domestic infrastructure, some in the media hear that as a call to cut the Pentagon budget and use the money to rebuild America. Like, if I said, "Those chocolate-chip cookies in the kitchen sure smell delicious," you might think, "Naiman's not just making an aesthetic judgment; he's thinking about eating the cookies.")
Clearly, Sanders has got his message: reduce extreme economic inequality, curb the political power of the billionaire class, address the challenge of climate change -- and he's determined, as much as possible, to "stay on message."
But events happen -- like the austerity/regime change policies that the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank have been trying to impose on Greece -- and candidates are expected to talk about events that happen. And in the case of the IMF and Greece, Sanders, unlike the others, did speak up.
On July 2, Hillary Clinton sent a letter to Haim Saban, a major Clinton donor and fundraiser, expressing her "alarm" over the "Boycott, Divestment, and Sanction movement," which she called "a global effort to isolate the state of Israel by ending commercial and academic exchanges." Clinton asserted that "we need to make countering BDS a priority." Crucially, Clinton's letter failed to make any distinction between Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank. (Peter Beinart thinks that Clinton was signaling that she will oppose a resolution at the United Nations supporting the two-state solution.)
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee [AIPAC] has been campaigning to erase the distinction in U.S. policy between Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank, under the guise of "combatting the global BDS movement." As part of this campaign, AIPAC recently pushed language through Congress that defines the "global BDS" which the U.S. should oppose as including boycott, divestment, and sanctions against enterprises in "Israeli-controlled territories" -- that is, enterprises in Israeli settlements in the West Bank. According to the AIPAC provision, Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank are the same thing. J Street and Americans for Peace Now opposed the AIPAC provision.
The Obama administration denounced the AIPAC provision, saying, "by conflating Israel and 'Israeli-controlled territories,' a provision of the Trade Promotion Authority legislation runs counter to longstanding U.S. policy towards the occupied territories, including with regard to settlement activity...The U.S. government has never defended or supported Israeli settlements and activity associated with them and, by extension, does not pursue policies or activities that would legitimize them."
By condemning "BDS" without distinguishing between Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank, Clinton is supporting -- whether intentionally or not -- the AIPAC campaign to erase the distinction between Israel and Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Given that major media coverage of this issue has been virtually non-existent, it seems unlikely that major media will successfully press Hillary to clarify her position on Israeli settlements in the West Bank unless the issue is raised by another candidate.
But another candidate could find that the issue resonates among Democrats. A recent study found that 45 percent of Democratic "opinion leaders" said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who criticized the Israeli occupation and mistreatment of Palestinians, while only 23 percent said they would be less likely to vote for such a candidate.
Bernie, as the main Democratic challenger to Hillary, seems like a logical address for this concern. If you would like Bernie to say that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are not Israel, you can tell him so here.

Think about it.....who is WAGING PEACE?

Illegal Israeli settlers are destroying Palestinian crops.....Israeli settlers stone US Consulate vehicles.

If Israeli soldiers kill unarmed Palestinian children who throw rocks, shouldn't this be acceptable US reciprocity to shoot illegal Israeli settlers?

The rest of the World does NOT agree with US Policy toward Israel.
How could everyone else be wrong?

Israeli settlers stone two cars belonging to US consulate staff

US security staff reportedly unholster weapons during standoff in Jerusalem between US consular party and far-right settlers from illegal West Bank outpost

The consular officials were asked to attend because some of the land owners affected hold US citizenship.

According to Palestinian reports quoting land owners, in recent days settlers uprooted more than 5,000 olive tree saplings, some of which had been planted to mark the recent death of senior Palestinian official Ziad Abu Ein, who collapsed and died after being manhandled by an Israeli soldier.

When the US vehicles arrived on the scene, close to the outpost, settlers exited the outpost and a confrontation ensued in which the American cars were stoned. It was during this confrontation that US security officers drew a side arm and a rifle.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the settlers threw rocks at the officials who were forced to return to their vehicle.

She said that accompanying American security personnel did not use their weapons during the incident.

According to Israeli officials quoted by Israel Radio the US convoy had not coordinated with security officials before making the visit.

“The settlers attacked the cars of the US consulate in the town Turmus Aya near the settlement of Adi Ad,” a local Palestinian, Zakaria Sadah, posted on his Facebook page.

The US armoured vehicles were lightly damaged during the confrontation which saw the visit cancelled.

Vandalism by settlers of Palestinian olive trees is a persistent problem with prosecutions very rare.

There was no comment from the US embassy.

This & that......

BIG PHARMA'S SCAM!

Have you seen big price spikes in how much your medicine costs? Are you splitting pills in half to make your prescriptions last longer? Weigh in here:http://www.sanders.senate.gov/drug-prices

Several of you have asked me why the National Football League continues to enjoy the tax status of a non-profit when it functions like a huge corporation and its commissioner, Roger Goodell, pulled in $44.2 million in 2012 alone (executive VP Jeff Pash got $7.9 million and another executive VP, Eric Grubman, $4.2 million, and three other executives got over $1.7 million each). The answer is it spends a lot of money to be popular in Congress. According to OpenSecrets.org, the NFL has donated millions in campaign contributions to political leaders in the past few years and spent more than $1.6 million in lobbying Congress in the past 18 months. And it's an equal-opportunity contributor. In the Kentucky race for Senate, for example, the NFL has contributed both to Mitch McConnell ($10,000 so far) and to Alison Grimes ($5,000).
But an explanation is not a justification. There is no justification for the NFL's nonprofit tax status. Nor, for that matter, is there any justification for any nonprofit -- subsidized by the rest of us taxpayers -- paying any executive more than 20 times the median household income (this year, that would be $1 million). You agree?
We’ve also uncovered the Republican plan to alleviate poverty in America! Drum roll, please:

Will we ever have a politics that raises income taxes on the wealthy to finance world-class schools for our kids, raises the minimum wage to a living wage, provides a minimum guaranteed income, ensures reproductive and equal-marriage rights, protects our environment, and restores equal opportunity in America? Yes. How can I be sure? Because women are gaining economic and therefore political power, Latinos are gaining strength in numbers, African-Americans are becoming ever more politically active, and young people are the future. Meanwhile, white, mostly rural, mostly male, conservative voters are gradually disappearing. The most popular show on Fox News is Bill O’Reilly’s, but the median O'Reilly viewer is now over 72 years old. In actuarial terms, O’Reilly’s viewers will mostly be gone in a decade. The average Fox News viewer overall is 68.8 years.
The future belongs to progressives. The real question is what we do with it.

“I remain concerned that we don’t see sufficient seriousness on the part of the federal government about protecting the American public,” says Texas Senator Ted Cruz, speaking about the Ebola virus. But Cruz’s own government shutdown and Republican-led budget cuts caused the National Institutes of Health to delay clinical trials that, according to Dr. Francis Collins, director of the NIH, would probably have produced an Ebola vaccine by now. Similar budget cuts have forced the Center for Disease Control to reduce its disease outbreak detection program. What Cruz and his fellow rightwing travelers don’t get is America cannot protect the public’s health on the cheap.
