Toyota's Woes Raise Questions About Auto Electronics


Could software, or faulty logic design, be at the root of runaway acceleration problems plaguing Toyota automobiles?

Toyota steadfastly denies this is the case, but others are not sure.

In recent testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives, Toyota CEO President Akio Toyoda insisted that neither electronics nor software could be blamed for the rash of runaway Toyotas reported in the U.S.
Nonetheless, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) heard enough concern over electronics that it is opening an investigation of possible electronic and software defects. And Toyota itself is installing, at least on some models, a brake override system to bypass electronic control, one that shuts the engine off when both the accelerator and the brake pedal are held down at the same time.

That Congress, not to mention the American public, is reluctant to accept Toyota's assurances typifies the mistrust felt toward microprocessor-based systems in automobiles, even as people rely on them daily.
Could the growing complexity of software in our automobiles be leading to more software bugs in our automobiles, some leading to deadly behaviors? Or, are such suspicions based, perhaps unfairly, on experiences with the buggy software on home computers, software that is probably designed with far less rigor than automotive software?

In short, can the electronics in automobiles be trusted without a second thought? Depends on whom you ask.

The unintended acceleration problem has been seemingly plaguing Toyota for several years, though it was the news about the tragic deaths of a San Diego family last August that brought national attention to the matter.

A borrowed Toyota Lexus, driven by off-duty police officer Mark Saylor, started accelerating uncontrollably, reaching a speed above 100 miles per hour and plowing through an intersection before careening off into a river basin, killing all four passengers.

Toyota itself places the blame on accidents like these on sticky accelerators and improperly positioned floor mats. "Toyota is confident that no defect exists in the [electronic control unit]," an F.A.Q. on the Toyota site explains.

This response doesn't satisfy at least some members of Congress.

"You can't rule [electronics] out because you don't know. You can't conclude [the cause] one way or the other," said U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe, a Maine Republican, during a Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing held Wednesday to investigate the NHTSA's handling of the complaints about unintended acceleration.

Snowe noted that NHTSA couldn't rule the possibility out because it had no software engineers on staff to investigate the claim.

The component under scrutiny has been the electronic throttle control system (), which Toyota started installing in some of its cars beginning in 2002.

Before electronics were introduced in autos, the accelerator pedal was directly connected by a cable to the throttle, which regulates the amount of air, and hence gas, entering the engine.

Now, an electronic control module [ECM], consisting of two processors and nonvolatile memory that holds the logic of the unit, sits between the pedal and the throttle. The ETC monitors the location of the pedal through two position sensors connected to the accelerator.

Two additional sensors are also connected to the throttle. The throttle itself is controlled by a motor, which in turn is controlled by the ECM.

Toyota claims its unit operates under fail-safe conditions, using self-diagnostic logic. If output values from two pedal accelerators do not match, or if the two values from the throttle do not match, or either is showing values that are out of their normal ranges, then the ETC will revert to a fail-safe mode, which means an alert light will come on in a dashboard and the car will run at reduced speed.

David Gilbert, a professor of automotive technology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, found that the ETC is not foolproof, despite Toyota's claims. In tests, which he later described before last week's Congressional hearings, he found that the ETC did not detect certain types of short-circuit malfunctions that could occur with the pedal sensors. If the ETC did not detect the complete possible range of errors, then it could not enter into a fail-safe mode, he argued.

"Some types of [ETC] circuit malfunctions were detectable by the ECM, and some were not," Gilbert told Congress. "The Toyota detection strategies were unable to identify malfunctions of the APP sensor signal inputs to the ECM."

With this in mind, it could be conceivable that malfunctions that were not anticipated by the ETC could lead to a runaway engine, Gilbert argued.

Speaking before Wednesday's Senate hearing, Toyota Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada said that the company tried to replicate Gilbert's test and was unable to produce the same results. "In any case, it would be extremely unlikely or difficult to reproduce in the real world," he said, speaking through a translator.
But trying to ferret out everything that could happen in normal operations is a demanding task, one perhaps that the auto industry, and its parts suppliers, are just learning, some say.

Despite the best efforts of coders and reviewers, most professionally written software programs still have about one bug per thousand lines of code, said Andy Chou, chief scientist at Coverity. For code that has gone through extensive review -- such as code used in airplanes -- that number jumps to about one in 10,000

Coverity is an expert in the area. It analyzes software for defects and counts among its customers automobile-parts manufacturers such as Bosh, and car manufacturers such as Daimler and Renault.

Citing a widely used figure, Chou said that the average luxury automobile has more than 100 million lines of code, spread across all of its microcontrol units.

If this is indeed the case, then the auto has twice the amount of code found in a desktop operating system.

And, in many cases, this code could have been developed under the severe time pressure of getting new models out each calendar year.

"There is a different set of pressures for the automobile industry than there is in the avionics industry, where a plane may last for decades," Chou said.

As this collection of software grows more complex, it may become susceptible to more errors that are more difficult to find, or even reproduce.

For instance, one of the challenges investigators and mechanics have had is in reproducing the accelerator problem in test labs. This could be due to some sort of race condition, in which a system may behave differently from one moment to the next depending on the largely indeterminate timing of certain interrelated events, Chou said.

Also, as different control units of the automobile are networked together -- which manufacturers are increasing doing -- then the degree of complexity, and the ways errors can spring up, grow even larger still, Chou said.

"We're talking about very large, complex systems," Chou said. "When these systems are connected, they can start to have behaviors that are emergent. They are not necessarily behaviors that they would have on their own but you put them together, they may do things that are unexpected."
Not all agree with this assessment, though.

Reza Hoseinnezhad, a research fellow at the The University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Engineering, has done extensive work on developing brake-by-wire prototypes, or electronic-based braking systems. He sees the worries over electronics design as largely overstated, given the quality-control measures the automotive industry uses for mission-critical components.

"The reported faults are very rare and if they are occurring within the software and logic design of the Toyota cars, they would have been predictable and debuggable before mass production," Hoseinnezhad said in an e-mail interview.

Which is not to say that Toyota, or other car manufacturers, haven't experienced software problems before. In February, the car maker recalled 400,000 of its Prius models to update the software for its antilock brakes. And in 2005, the car manufacturer recalled 160,000 of the Prius models due to faulty software that caused the engine to stop running.

But while automobiles do contain a lot of code, management is simplified quite a bit due to the modular design, Hoseinnezhad maintained.

"In modular style, the total length of the code is very long, but the complexity is comprehendible, the code is understandable and debugging is easy," he said. "Logical errors are usually expected to be detected and debugged before mass production of such systems. "

One thing is certain: This is not the last time suspicions will be raised about automobile electronics and the software that supports them. All cars rely on electronics, and there are few standards in place to ensure their safety.

This may be one reason why the U.S. White House has allocated funding for an additional 66 positions within NHTSA, and Congress is mulling over new laws to strengthen the review of potential automotive hazards. Toyota itself has set up an independent panel to review its ETC systems.

Whether or not electronic systems are already safe, industry and government are both learning that the public needs to trust in their safety as well.

"This loss of trust is more costly for us than anything else," Uchiyamada said.

What is TOYOTA really hiding?


If you were paying attention, didn't you wonder WHY TOYOTA concealed information from public scrutiny?

In the Oklahoma case, TOYOTA insisted the SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION that killed Barbara Schwarz and injured Jean Bookout was DRIVER ERROR - a common excuse offered by TOYOTA - BLAME THE VICTIM!

Yet TOYOTA was unable to explain SKID MARKS left as Jean Bookout attempted to stop the RUNAWAY TOYOTA.

Public kept in the dark about the TRUTH!






PR spin by automaker, law enforcement, and media in full force? Do they desperately desire the final report to say "pedal misapplication" in order to deflect from the ELECTRONICS of the computer-controlled throttle control system?

Let's see if the driver is hung out to dry publicly as so many have been in these crashes into storefronts, buildings, and homes. Jail time for drivers has been levied with nothing more than ruling out the mechanical causes. In cases of Toyota and Lexus, inconsistent and inaccurate EDR information has been used to falsely incriminate SUA crash victims. Character assassinations in the media prior to concrete evidence presentation seem to be the norm.

Are automakers nervous that the truth will be revealed publicly? Why are so many of the articles about such SUA events lacking in pertinent details, like make, model, and model year? Why aren't the exact words of the driver stated? Why is there usually immediate speculation that the driver pressed the wrong pedal? These late model vehicles are *computer-controlled*. Glitches occur often.

Critical safety standards aren't strictly regulated and fail-safes have been found to be ineffective by experts in the embedded software field.

Think about how often you reboot your electronic devices. Have you considered that an electronically-driven vehicle has many of the same "glitch" issues? Are you erroneously assuming that your safety has been ensured by the auto manufacturer? Just know, the auto industry is not regulated like the airline industry. Educate yourself on this critical safety matter.

The Car Wash Association knows the truth about sudden unintended acceleration in late model vehicles, particularly Chryslers. A FastStop Car Wash just admitted that there is a list of the most common vehicles to suddenly accelerate. After an employee was thrown from a Ford Expedition as it careened out-of-control from a car wash and into a power box on the side of a building, this information was revealed by the media. In addition, Honda has just become the first automaker to address electronic throttle control software problems.

Why doesn't the public have access to the most-often-to-suddenly-accelerate vehicle list? How hard are the automakers trying to keep such information hidden? Will what you do not know ultimately put you or your family in unnecessary jeopardy? Will the PR agenda of the automakers continue to push for a "pedal misapplication" final report in these crash events?

How long will the flawed study into Toyota and Lexus sudden unintended acceleration by NASA/NHTSA be touted as a reason to blame the vehicle owners? How often will the old Audi SUA investigation be cited by online PR trolls in an effort to justify immediate incrimination of the driver victims? More importantly, how long will the public be deceived?

Why was Toyota whistleblower Betsy Benjaminson recently issued a subpoena by Toyota Motor Corporation? Is this an on-going effort by the automaker to silence the exposure of Toyota internal documents related to the electronic sudden unintended acceleration? Why hasn't Ms. Benjaminson's information been covered by the U.S. media as it has been overseas? More importantly, why hasn't the U.S. Department of Justice made reference to this information in its recent criminal investigation of Toyota? Why have we only heard about *mechanical* causes of SUA?

Something is amiss. Doesn't the public deserve to know the truth? After all, electronic sudden unintended acceleration affects everyone, not just vehicle drivers. Pedestrians and storefront occupants have been killed or maimed. Even residents in homes have been impacted. SUA events are not just occurring on the highways; they are happening in parking lots and from a standstill at traffic stops, too.

This serious problem isn't just about elderly drivers, drivers with medical conditions, or impaired drivers as a seemingly pervasive PR effort might have you believe. This is about vehicles out-of-control because of electronic glitches and ineffective fail-safes. This is about unregulated critical safety standards in complex electronically-controlled vehicles.

Car on Memorial Drive strikes four parked vehicles, plows through fence

MUNCIE -- An eastbound Dodge Durango plowed through a fence and smashed into four parked vehicles at Don’s Auto Repair, 2011 E. Memorial Dr., around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Brandon Lee, 25, Muncie, the driver, told The Star Press the throttle of the Durango stuck and he swerved off the road to avoid striking other cars.

Lee suffered a bump and a laceration on his forehead but declined medical treatment.

City police patrolman Chris Kirby said there was no evidence that Lee was impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Police were investigating whether the Durango struck other parked vehicles on Memorial west of the crash.

The call came in to 911 communications as a rollover. Lee told The Star Press he didn’t think his SUV rolled over. It was sitting upright but the front end was heavily damaged and the roof was caved in.

Kirby said Lee gave police three different versions of what caused the wreck: the throttle stuck, he blacked out and someone ran out in front of him on the road.

Kirby noted that there were no skid marks to indicate that Lee had applied the brakes before the collision. Based on the heavy damage to the Durango and three of the vehicles in the parking lot of Don’s Auto Repair, Kirby concluded that Lee had been traveling “at a pretty decent speed.”

Eastbound traffic on Memorial was detoured.

Troopers are looking into if sudden acceleration caused the 2006 Toyota Solara to crash into the KinderCare Learning Center on April 9. The same make and model was named in a $1.6 billion lawsuit last year.
 
 
 
"We have got to look at everything," said FHP Sgt. Kim Montes. "We would be remiss if we did not check out every potential issue."
 
Albert Campbell, 61, was driving the Toyota Solara when authorities said he was struck from behind by Robert Corchado.
 
 
According to troopers, the impact forced the Solara into the parking lot and into the day care on Goldenrod Road. The Solara drove through the wall and into the playroom and came to a stop inside a second room. The crash killed Lily Quintus, 4, and injured 11 other children.
 
"It could be human error. It could be mechanical," said Montes. "It could be the physics of the crash and that's what we have to determine."
 
Toyota was fined by the Department of Justice for misleading motorists about a "faulty electronic-throttle system" in their cars after settling a lawsuit in July that claims the same make, model and year of the Toyota Solara involved in the day care crash lost resale value after sudden-acceleration complaints.
 
"Obviously we know about the potential problems with Toyota vehicles," said Montes. "That model year is included where sudden acceleration and unexplained acceleration in some crashed and other incidents."
 
A crash analyst said the Solara went airborne once it was clipped by Corchado's silver Durango. Troopers are looking at the black box in the Solara for data that could give better insight into those pivotal seconds just before the crash.
 
Last week, troopers announced the toxicology results of blood taken from Campbell at the scene, saying there was no alcohol and no drugs in his system.
 
 
An inspection report from Orange County Deputy Chief Building Inspector Robert Amato shows that the front wall of KinderCare had "extensive termite damage."
 
"I didn't see no live termites but there was termite damage at one time," Amato said. "There were still studs there. Termites like to eat the studs from inside out, so unless you were doing repairs or renovating you won't know unless something unforeseen happens."
 
Amato said a licensed architect or engineer needs to assess the damage from the vehicle entering the building and the termite damage for structural stability.
 
Corchado is charged with causing the crash and then fleeing the scene.

Easter Sunday and TOYOTA: Let's Go Places!

The TOYOTA LEXUS crash described in the article below has all the hallmarks of TOYOTA'S SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION problem that TOYOTA has refused to address/correct, blamed on floor mats, sticky pedals and driver error.

Victims of Fort Myers church crash speak out

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Victims in a Fort Myers crash, where a car smashed into a church Sunday night, are speaking out as police identify the driver accused of causing the chaos.
 
“Something went POW,” yelled Crismane Mathurn, as she recounted the events of Sunday night.
Mathurn was one of more than 200 other churchgoers, packed inside the Second Haitian Baptist Church during the time of the crash.
 
Others described the sound of the impact as “deafening.”
 
“She described it as Haiti, when the earthquake happened – the sound effect,” said Patti Louis.
Louis says both of her parents were inside of the church for the annual Easter concernt, when a 2006 Lexus sedan, driven by Marie Ange Masson went crashing into the building, according to Fort Myers Police.
 
Police say Masson claims there was a mechanical malfunction, telling police that she attempted to press the break and park the car when it accelerated.
 
31-year-old Masson is not being charged criminally at this time, but police say the investigation remains active.
 
FOX 4 exclusively spoke to the owner of the car involved in the crash, he says the car had no known issues.
 
“There’s nothing wrong with the car,” said Asker Joram, “The break is alright…tires alright…nothing.”
 
18 people were transported to several area hospitals, four of the injured went as trauma alerts.
 
The age of the injured ranged from six-years-old to 88-years-old.
 
None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. None of the patients needed to go into surgery. Most of the injuries were sprains and cuts.
 
Rescuers used car jacks to lift the vehicle off of people who were trapped.
 
Many loved ones of those pinned in the wreckage got a call that would even shake the most religious.
 
“I just asked if my mom was dead or not,” said Dufils Sherilus.
 
One woman seen heading back to the hospital this morning to visit a family member says she was treated for back and neck pain but was later released.
 
Today, families of those involved in the crash are thanking a divine being for minimizing what could have been a tragedy to an accident.
“He was sitting in that row (where the car crashed) and then he just sat moved back, because my mom sat behind him...he went to sit with my mom,” said Louis, “Thank God he did get up.”
 
The Fort Myers Police Department estimates upwards of $10,000 in damage was done to the building in the crash.
