DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

Leo is in a bit of a fix tonight. He has been labeled by his owner as having issues and labeled by the NYC ACC as being New Hope Only. According to his owners notes he has lived with adults and children for the past several months. If you read carefully, it seems Leo does not like chaos and confusion. It seems to annoy and bother him and he would probably do well in a home without the noise and confusion that goes along with children being in the home. It can also explain why he wasn't exactly a star student on his safer either. Leo needs a safe and calm place to land with someone who is experienced in handling this type of pup. Please contact a rescue if you can help him.

I am a male tan and white tan and collie smooth mix. The shelter thinks I am about 1 YEAR

I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 12/23/2012 from NY 11220, owner surrender reason stated was COST.

MOST RECENT MEDICAL RATING, BEHAVIOR RATING & WEIGHT
12/26/2012 Exam Type BEHAVIOR - Medical Rating is 1 - NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 45.4 LBS.

Helper Dog: A0953802 Leo was surrendered due to personal and behavior issues. The owner states that Leo has lived with adults and children and is kept in a open room when they aren't home. The owner states if startled by strangers he growls and growls at the sound of children. The owner also states he does not get along well with dogs; growls, becomes tense. Leo pulls a bit on the leash and was stiff and showed some aggressive behavior during the assessment. He was tense during handling, but was distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag interaction. He snapped at the assess-a-hand during the food bowl test and showed some concerning behavior during toy and rawhide tests - stiffening and shows teeth, but did not escalate to a snap or bite to the assess-a-hand. Leo approaches the helper dog, body is tense, hard eyes, and shows teeth. Look: 5. Dog freezes or growls and shows teeth. Sensitivity: 5. Dog freezes, shows teeth. Tag: 2. DFW Shelter Bullies shared Royse City Animal Shelter's photo.
Attention: Royse City, Texas. Buckey Boy needs a good home, he has not had the best life so far, but would like to live the good life!!! Please share, he is very Urgent!!!
Buck~ He was a stray that was rescued from a dog fight. His injuries required a stay at the vet. He is now available for adoption and is eager to meet his new owner. His rough and tough exterior is no match for his sweet temperament on the inside. He is not fond of other dogs but LOVES people of all ages and sizes. He wants to be given a chance to be a companion pet in a home setting. He seems to have had a hard life so far... Can you give this tough guy a chance? Call Kellye at 972-998-6116

Ciomara is a former family pet, already neutered and 4 years old. This gorgeous guy managed to get away from his former owners, and must be wishing that he were back home right now. Ciomara may never have met anyone so strange as the staff of the ACC; where else would a cat meet anyone so rude as to shove a plastic hand into one's face? What is the meaning of this intrusion? Unfortunately, it ends up meaning that a New Hope partner will have to step up for Ciomara, who is probably a dignified gentleman anywhere else in the world. The ACC have him scheduled to die before adoptions begin tomorrow, so all the magic has to happen for him tonight.

You might figure that a shelter system which kills dogs and cats in high numbers on a daily basis would be anxious for help from rescue groups. Not so in New York City.

In fact, Animal Care & Control of NYC has a long backlog of rescue group applications which they have not bothered considering yet.

Meanwhile, the kill lists continue, with 25 dogs and cats in danger tonight. They have until 6am to find rescue groups or adopters, and you can see each one at Urgent Part 2 - Urgent Death Row Dogs & Pets on Death Row - Urgent Death Row Cats:
