He never barks to be noticed and when we took him out of his kennel to get to know him, he was a little hesitant and not too sure of our motives. We didn't push him and let him adjust to us at his own speed. He looked around - taking everything in and seemed to relax. He certainly did not show signs of aggression and was up until recently sharing a kennel with other dog and there were no problems! This sweet fella desperately needs a safe and loving home or a receiving rescue ASAP! Can you open your heart and home? Please hurry! This pet has been at the shelter since 11/14/12!! Michelle pulls on the leash and was sociable toward the handler during the assessment - soft body. She was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. She engages in play, loose body, wags tail, mouth is open. She was not interested in food, but was easy to handle when chewing on toys and rawhides. Michelle rushed in quickly during the dog-dog test, but showed no aggression.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor's hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft 'popping' of the body, etc.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back.
Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Rawhide: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish rawhide to you.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward.

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.
For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed.
