Operators shut down plant Friday after loss of offsite power

According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth was shut down Friday night after losing offsite power. Offsite power was lost at 9:17 p.m. on February 8. According to the NRC, the plant is stable and "all safety systems responded as designated".

 

The operators shut the plant down after declaring an "unusual event". Unusual events are the lowest of NRC's emergency classifications, according to a statement from the federal regulatory commission.

Earlier last week, an Entergy spokeswoman told Bloomberg power was increased at Pilgrim. "We are in the process of increasing plant output," said Carol Wightman. The increase in production at the Plymouth plant was ordered after shutdown of a nuclear facility in Florida was announced, Bloomberg reports.

According to a statement on Entergy's homepage, Pilgrim has been in cold shutdown since Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and work is being done to restore the offsite power.

 

Before the first snowflakes fell, a cadre of Pilgrim's enemies called for the facility to be closed during the storm.
