BP Oil Spill Alert: Stop Dispersants from Poisoning Our Food, Environment and Wildlife

BP Oil Spill Alert: Stop Dispersants from Poisoning Our Food, Environment and Wildlife

The Government Accountability Project’s mission is to promote corporate and government accountability by protecting whistleblowers, advancing occupational free speech, and empowering citizen activists.

About the Petition

The chemical dispersent Corexit was used by BP to clean up one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. While the chemicals made the oil appear invisible, studies have shown that Corexit becomes 52 times more toxic when mixed with oil. The

EPA must ban the use of Corexit for good.

Here’s what is at risk:
  • Food: A recent study found levels of hydrocarbons in seafood were up to 3,000 times higher than safety thresholds for human consumption.
  • Wildlife: 3 years after the well is capped, Gulf dolphins, whales and turtles are still dying in record numbers.
  • Health and Society: While the official number of health claims has yet to be counted, residents and cleanup workers in contact with the dispersant have reported various health complications, including respiratory problems, rash, irritation, nausea, exhaustion, and cognitive decline. Many of these people will receive settlement funds drastically less than their medical costs or be denied compensation entirely.
  • Environment: A new study shows oil plumes, dispersed by Corexit, resulted in coral mortality and a die off of organisms at the base of the food chain. The numerous other impacts of Corexit on Gulf coast ecosystems are still being measured.
