Save A Life!

Breed Specific Regulations and Insurance Company Policy are WRONG!
This is why!

Dogs love to ride in cars, and Kiya was no exception. "Puppy Doe", who we now know was named "Kiya" enjoyed trips.
"Puppy Doe" happy and loved in her original home. Her name was "Kiya".

View 7 photos

Kiya loved treats and dinner. (unknown/Justice for Puppy Doe Facebook page)

September 21, 2013
Her name was Kiya, and she used to have a loving home...

The heart-breaking story of "Puppy Doe" has gripped animal lovers across the country. And now her previous owner has released pictures of "Puppy Doe" to a Facebook page set up to help find the person, or persons, responsible for beating, stabbing, starving, and torturing the tiny pit bull puppy "medieval-style" for months, and then abandoning her to die alone.

According to the Facebook page, the puppy's previous owner sent them pictures of the puppy which cops named "Puppy Doe". The owner also told us her name.

"Puppy Doe's" name was "Kiya".

Her name was "Kiya" and, in her former life, she was obviously very much loved. The pictures show a happy, healthy puppy, surrounded with soft blankets and an abundance of toys. There are pictures of Kiya going for rides in a car, her face alight in doggy anticipation, and Kiya eagerly waiting to be fed.

The pictures show Kiya's happy life before her owner says she was forced to give her up, because of a breed discriminatory housing policy.

According to the information released by the Facebook page, the owner was forced to re-home Kiya because her landlord insisted she do so. The owner advertised on Craigslist, hoping to find a suitable owner. Although the details are not yet clear, it appears that Kiya may have been re-homed a second time from the person who responded to the Craigslist ad.

The owner (whose name has been withheld) is already working with police to track down Kiya's abuser and bring him, or her, to justice. In the meantime, she allegedly had this to say about Kiya's pictures:

"Instead of seeing my dog burned, stabbed, beaten, & starving please remember her as this. Her best friends were a chihuahua, & a minpin. She loved pig ears, tug of war, & playing fetch. She loved kids & was petrified of big dogs. vicious? Maybe if she attacked you with kisses. I will never forgive myself for what has happened to you. I hate BSL & how hard it is for these guys to find homes. I hate myself for thinking you were happy in your forever home while you were shuttled back on craigslist again. Im sorry I thought it was unfair to hide you in an apartment you werent allowed to be in I wish I could take it all back I love you kiya " (sic)

"Puppy Doe's" story shows the result of housing and municipal policies of breed-specific legislation ("BSL"). BSL tears families apart, forcing them to make decisions that can sometimes - as in the case of "Puppy Doe" - end in unimaginable sorrow and regret.

Kiya was described by the veterinarians who gave her painkillers and her last warm meal before putting her gently to sleep, as a "sweet and submissive" dog. She was a member of a family, who had never hurt anyone. In spite of her innocence, this young dog, barely more than a baby, was condemned to suffer horrifically at the hands of her unknown sadist, simply because she was a pit bull.

As this story unfolds, we will keep you updated on the latest developments. Meanwhile, please share "Puppy Doe's" story, and these pictures, as much as you can, so that those responsible can be found.

Several rewards have been offered for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of "Puppy Doe's" torturer.

Anyone with information about "Puppy Doe" is urged to call the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s Law Enforcement Department at 617-226-5610, email them at cruelty@arlboston.org, or call Quincy Police Det. Thomas Pepdjonovich at 617-745-5774.

Meanwhile, remember this: "Puppy Doe" had a name. Her name, was "Kiya".

Set on fire with burns over her entire back and sides, 7-month-old Hope weighs only 4 pounds. She was found near a dumpster in suburban Detroit and left untreated for more than 2 weeks before Tail Wagger's 1990 in Livonia, Michigan, took her under their immediate care. Emaciated, feverish, with pale gums and covered with fleas, Hope's worst problem was deep, severe burns on her back, sides and ears. Tank is an adorable puppy that is growing up at his facility He was surrendered by his owners and has now landed on the urgent list.

This baby should be facing a life full of happiness, not possibly death. He has a brown/black short smooth coat in a brindle pattern, white chest and paws, a long tail, and a very sweet face with semi-erect ears. We love HOPPY ENDINGS

Great News! Krystal, the bunny that was rescued by rabbit-hero Ron after being kicked by two men and chased by dogs, has been adopted by former Special Bunny vo...lunteer Melissa and her husband Josh!

When Melissa first took Krystal in, she was only going to foster, but after a few days of love and joy, Melissa and Krystal are inseparable.

Here's what Melissa had to say, " She's a delight! I think given her situation, she's super friendly and sweet. Josh made the comment that she's too cute to ever give back."

We couldn't be happier that Krystal found such a wonderful home with such great bunny-parents. Congrats to Melissa, Josh, and Krystal!

MACAROON PETITE PLAYFUL COMPANION
TO BE DESTROYED - 09/20/13 Manhattan - P (A0978570)
A volunteer writes ~ Macaroons are known as sweet and coconutty confections, perfect for anytime, anywhere -- our Macaroon is no exception! Striding along on leash with an insouciant air, Macaroon proves an exceptional companion in the park, keeping close without being needy and passing other dogs with just a mere glance. Off leash in the backyard, she's a playful companion who comes when called, and knows to "sit" and shake "paw" on command. Although Macaroon's past is a mystery, her gleaming coat, manicured nails, and nice manners suggest that she was, until recently, a well-cared for member of a family. She also takes care of business once outside, takes treats gently and greets other dogs stopping by her playpen with easy and casual swings of her tail. Simply put, Macaroon is one stellar girl who will light up every day of your life!

Please hurry if you can foster or adopt Macaroon and save her life. If you need help, just click on her pic and ask!

09/12/2013 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Macaroon walked calmly on leash but in the eval room she was easily excitable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. At times she appeared anxious and grabbed assessor to try and mount. She was over active during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, and was a bit difficult to position, but showed no aggression. Macaroon followed the assessor but was at times distracted with objects in the room rather than the assessor during the Tag game. She was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. She was not interested in toys but was easy to handle when chewing on rawhides. Macaroon rushed in quickly during the dog-dog interaction, but showed no aggression and appeared friendly when near. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Dog may lick hand. Food: 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide. Dog - dog: 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. Helper Dog A0978344

http://hendrickboards.com/s/save-morgan

Discovered hiding in a fort house, Morgan was in very bad shape, suffering from seizures, in extreme pain and severely emaciated. X-rays show she had an obstruction in her abdomen. She was on IV fluids in hopes to get things moving on their own, but on Thursday night, she had to undergo emergency surgery to remove the blockage. Morgan has been wandering the streets of Detroit for a long time, if not all of her life. Last year, she was abducted by men in a white van and went missing until now and she needs our help. Thanks to Detroit Bully Corps, Morgan is battling to get a second chance.

And, for all those who supported Patty recently, Morgan and Patty are at the same hospital getting treated! Perhaps, they will become best buddies!

You know what I think? I think people are taking dogs to IAS because it is a pretty shelter and they know most of the dogs get out into homes or rescues. For those who are considering this option, let me show you the RIPs I don't. STOP DUMPING DOGS for someone else to take care of. That is what I think. We can't change the world but we can change some minds.

Good News! Chewie can come home from GVS tomorrow! He is going to be under strict care in foster but has a good prognosis. His vet bill at GVS is going to be $1,700 even with a rescue discount, plus his two days at our regular vet. Any help with donations is greatly appreciated! We have only raised $226 so far!
