Minimum Wage Deception in Massachusetts

Please add your name and support low wage workers without penalizing others:

Over the past few months it has been inspiring to see thousands of activists across the state, including our allies at Progressive Massachusetts, push for a higher minimum wage. This is a sorely needed step in an economy where rising inequality drives countless families to the edge of economic ruin. In November the Massachusetts Senate answered the call and voted 32 to 7 in favor of increasing the minimum wage to $11 an hour.

Despite the lopsided Senate vote and broad popular support, the bill is in trouble. Powerful Massachusetts speaker Robert DeLeo is attempting to attach cuts to unemployment benefits to the bill.

Rather than allowing an up or down vote on the popular minimum wage increase, DeLeo has decided to pit the interests of the unemployed against the interests of low wage workers. This despicable tactic is an example of the worst kind of politics and it is crucial that we take steps to stop it.

Sign Progressive Massachusetts’ YouPower petition urging Speaker DeLeo to allow a clean vote on raising the minimum wage.

With a crucial democratic leadership meeting scheduled for today, this petition could begin to put real pressure on Speaker DeLeo to back down. Last time we partnered with Progressive Massachusetts, your hard work led to the defeat of the worst of last year's “welfare reform” laws. Together, with your support, we can again succeed in protecting the dignity of our fellow citizens.

Thank you for all that you do.
