New radioactive water leak discovered at Fukushima nuclear
plant --Water was found to have high levels of
radioactive cesium and cobalt 21 Jan 2014 Video filmed by a remote
control robot at the Fukushima plant shows highly radioactive water, which is
believed to have leaked from one of the damaged reactors. The video was released
by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). Highly radioactive water was
detected inside the No. 3 reactor building at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear
plant, Tepco said.
Radiation at Fukushima well hits 'record
high' 18 Jan 2014 A record high level of beta rays released from
radioactive strontium-90 has been detected at the crippled Fukushima nuclear
power plant beneath the No. 2 reactor's well facing the ocean, according to the
facility's operator. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) measured the amount of
beta ray-emitting radioactivity at more than 2.7 million becquerels per liter,
Fukushima's operator said as reported in Japanese media. The measurements were
taken on Thursday. There has been a spike of radiation in this area since the
beginning of the year.
Snowden Seeking Russian Protection After Threats:
Lawyer 21 Jan 2014 Edward Snowden,
the fugitive former U.S. contractor residing in Russia under temporary asylum,
is appealing to the local government for protection after receiving threats
against his life, his lawyer in Moscow said. "He has no other option but to seek
protection and ask for the situation to be cleared up," Anatoly Kucherena said
by phone today. "There are worries and alarm about statements and actions on the
part of some officials." Kucherena, who has represented Snowden's interests in
Russia since he sought refuge last July after leaking classified National
Security Agency documents, pointed to reports this month that
contained threats made by unidentified U.S. officials.

U.S. Preparing to Send Small Arms to
Iraq 17 Jan 2014 The U.S. is
preparing to send small arms and ammunition to the Iraqi government to help
combat resurgent al-Qaeda[al-CIAduh]-linked forces in western Anbar province,
the Pentagon said today. The military aid will be delivered "as rapidly as
possible" to meet a request made by [US-installed dictator] Iraqi Prime Minister
Nouri al-Maliki, said Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman. Maliki
told the Washington Post in an interview that he would support a new
U.S. military training mission in Jordan for Iraqi counterterrorism
troops, a move that would allow for a greater U.S. role in shoring up
'Iraq's' government.
Bomb near Pakistani army HQ in Rawalpindi kills four:
police 19 Jan 2014 A suicide bomber
killed four people in a crowded market on Monday near the Pakistani army
headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi, not far from the capital Islamabad,
police said. The market, 10 minutes' walk from the army headquarters, is in one
of the most secure areas of the city, said Rawalpindi police chief Akhtar Hayat
Lalika. About a dozen people were wounded, Lalika said.
DND removes report on killing of Canadian soldier by Israeli

Department has quietly removed from the Internet a report into the killing of a
Canadian military officer by Israeli forces, a move the soldier's widow says is
linked to the Conservative government's reluctance to criticize Israel for any
wrongdoing. Maj. Paeta Hess-von Kruedener and three other United Nations
observers were killed in 2006 when the Israeli military targeted their small
outpost with repeated artillery barrages as well as an attack by a fighter
aircraft... Hess-von Kruedener's widow, Cynthia, told the Citizen that the
decision to remove the document from the public domain was made by DND and the
government in an effort to protect Israel's reputation.

military said on Monday that air and naval assets, including two [war]ships in
the Black Sea, would be made available if needed during the Sochi Winter
Olympics in support of Russia, which faces militant threats to disrupt the
Games. The Pentagon said U.S. military commanders were "conducting prudent
planning and preparations" should American support be required during the Winter
Olympics. "The United States has offered its full support to the Russian
government as it conducts security preparations for the Winter Olympics,"
Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement.
Customs and Border Protection loaned Predator drones to other

additional daily flight logs that show the agency has flown its drones on behalf
of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies on 200 more occasions more
than previously released records indicated. Last July we reported, based on
daily flight log records CBP made available to us in response to our Freedom of
Information Act lawsuit, that CBP logged an eight-fold increase in the drone
surveillance it conducts for other agencies. These agencies included a diverse
group of local, state, and federal law enforcement--ranging from the FBI, ICE,

Prosecutor: NATO 3 'intended to commit an act of terror' in

three out-of-state men charged with plotting terrorist attacks during the 2012
NATO summit in Chicago got underway with prosecutors and defense attorneys
presenting vastly different views of the 'evidence.' Attorneys for Brian Church,
Jared Chase and Brent Betterly said their clients weren't terrorists, just
loud-mouthed young men, often drunk, who were goaded on by undercover police
officers desperate to make an arrest to
help their superiors justify the enormous security costs that came with hosting
the summit. "This is not a case of terrorism at all - it doesn't
even come close," said Sarah Gelsomino, an attorney for Brian Church. "That's
why this case is so extremely important. It's a case about who the state

Omaha police say 2 people killed in plant
explosion --4 workers
critically injured 20 Jan 2014 Two people were killed and several
others injured after structural collapse and fire at an animal feed plant Monday
in Omaha, Neb., officials said. The Omaha Police Department confirmed the two
deaths after Interim Fire Chief Bernie Kanger said crews had stopped rescue
efforts and would start a slower recovery effort to retrieve victims. Several
workers came out of the plant about three hours after the
explosion.

Purdue --Purdue
University was on lockdown after shots were fired on campus. 21 Jan
2014 A man is dead and another person is in custody following a shooting on the
campus of Purdue University in West LaFayette, Ind., according to school
officials. The gunman walked into a basement classroom of the Electrical
Engineering building around noon while a class was going on, school and law
enforcement officials told a news conference. Students were initially told to
stay in place until the building was cleared and the area fully
searched.
NY schools test 'panic button' app in wake of Sandy
Hook --Once the button
is pushed, other school staff with the app are notified with instructions such
as 'lock down' or 'evacuate.' 19 Jan 2014 Nassau County and a Manhattan
private school are testing a new emergency-response "panic button" inspired by
the Sandy Hook school massacre. The system, called School Safety Response,
provides an instant link between schools and police and fire departments through
an app installed on teachers' smartphones. The app allows school staffers to
touch a red "SOS" button on their phones in crisis situations, at which point an
exact GPS location is sent to an emergency-response center, where a team can
listen to what's happening live at the scene.
Ex-governor of
Virginia indicted on bribery charges
21 Jan 2014 Former Virginia governor Robert McDonnell (R) and his wife were
indicted on Tuesday by a federal grand jury and charged with accepting bribes in
the form of m-ney and gifts from a chief executive. An indictment with 14 counts
was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia against
McDonnell, who is only 10 days out of office, and his wife, Maureen. Court
appearances for the couple were set for Friday in Richmond.
Gov. Chris Christie ignores bridge, Hoboken scandals as he is

In his inaugural address today, Gov. Chris Christie delivered an impassioned
pitch for his second-term vision with no reference to the scandals swirling
around his administration. The Republican
governor won re-election by 22 percentage points, though there was a record low
turnout for a statewide election in New Jersey.
US attorney inquiry into Christie
widens 19 Jan 2014 The New Jersey
mayor who publicly claimed this weekend that Gov. Chris Christie's
administration tried to withhold hurricane relief funds met Sunday in private
with the U.S. attorney for the state of New Jersey. "This afternoon I met with
the U.S. Attorney's office for several hours at their request and provided them
with my journal and other documents," Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said in a
statement Sunday. Zimmer said Saturday in an interview with MSNBC that she would
be willing to sign a sworn statement and testify under oath that she had been
threatened by the governor's staff to approve a development project or risk
hurricane relief funding for her town of Hoboken, which was devastated by
Hurricane Sandy in October 2012.
Port Authority chairman hires former Homeland Security chief

2014 The chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, David
Samson, has hired former Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff to
represent him in the investigation of the George Washington Bridge lane
closures, a member of the Assembly investigative committee looking into the
matter said. "Samson has hired Michael Chertoff," Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri
Huttle (D-Bergen) said in a television appearance this morning.
New Jersey Democrats plan to expand Christie

Chris Christie spent the weekend in Florida meeting with key donors despite new
trouble at home, with Democratic lawmakers saying they're ready to expand the
"Bridgegate" investigation to look at claims that politics played a role in the
distribution of Sandy relief funds. Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer said over the
weekend that Christie's administration withheld Superstorm Sandy recovery aid
because the city wouldn't approve a major redevelopment project pitched by David
Samson's law firm. Samson is also board chairman at the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey, which operates the George Washington Bridge.
