Fukushima radiation levels underestimated by five times -
TEPCO 08 Feb 2014 TEPCO has revised the readings on the radioactivity
levels at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant well to 5 million becquerels of
strontium per liter -- both a record, and nearly five times higher than the
original reading of 900,000 becquerels per liter. Strontium-90 is a radioactive
isotope of strontium produced by nuclear fission with a half-life of 28.8 years.
The legal standard for strontium emissions is 30 becquerels per
liter.

Fukushima nuclear power plant 07 Feb 2014 Dozens of
American sailors who assisted Japan during the 2011 nuclear disaster are suing
the operators of Fukushima power plant for more than 612 million pounds (US$1bn)
in damages, claiming that they have become sick from radiation exposure...
"These sailors were in radioactive plumes for more than five hours," said Paul C
Garner, a lawyer representing the sailors, who claims to have been contacted by
more than 250 US navy personnel in relation to the case. "They are suing Tepco
for negligence in permitting escape of radiation from Fukushima nuclear power
plant, strict liability, fraudulent concealment of true facts and a 1 billion
medical fund plus compensation."
US regime-change operation in Ukr-ine exposed in leaked
diplomatic phone call 07 Feb 2014 A
leaked phone conversation between Victoria Nuland, assistant secretary of state
for European and Eurasian affairs, and Geoffrey Pyatt, the US ambassador to
Ukr-ine, has exposed the anti-democratic and colonialist character of the Obama
administration's intervention in the former Soviet republic. The discussion
between the two officials includes a detailed review of which right-wing
opposition figures Washington is working to install in office, and how it is
using the United Nations to rubber-stamp the operation. While Germany and other
European powers have worked closely with the Obama administration in
promoting the violent protests against President Viktor Yanukovych, the
leaked phone call reveals tensions between the imperialist powers. At one point
Nuland tells Pyatt, "F-ck the EU."

Senators to Obama: Get approval before keeping troops in
Afghanistan 06 Feb
2014 A bipartisan group of senators wants President Barack Obama to seek
approval from Congress if he wants to keep U.S. troops in Afghanistan after this
year. Leading the charge are Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah; Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.; Jeff
Merkley, D-Ore.; and Rand Paul, R-Ky. They introduced a resolution Thursday that
would require authorization from Congress before Mr. Obama could commit any
American troops to Afghanistan after 2014. Combat forces are scheduled to come
home by the end of the year, and remaining troops would shift to an advisory
role.
US successfully tests B-61 atomic
bomb 06 Feb 2014 The
US has successfully tested an updated version of a B-61 atomic bomb in
defiance of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which calls for
nuclear disarmament. The National Nuclear Security Administration said in a
statement that the test was conducted on Tuesday by the Los Alamos and Sandia
national laboratories, National Journal reported. The analysis "is a significant
achievement and gives us confidence in our ability to move forward with our
efforts to increase the safety and security of the bomb," Don Cook, NNSA deputy
administrator for defense programs, said.

get under way in Sochi. 06 Feb 2014 [CIA-backed] Terrorists could be

NATO Protesters Acquitted of Terrorism Charges, Convicted on
Lesser Counts 07 Feb 2014 A jury
acquitted three NATO summit protesters Friday of breaking Illinois' rarely
tested state terrorism law, a finding the defense said should dissuade Illinois
or any other states from ever pressing such charges in a similar way against
activists. While jurors found them not guilty of the most ominous charges, Brian
Church, Jared Chase and Brent Vincent Betterly were convicted on lesser counts
of arson and mob action. Thomas Durkin, who represents Chase and is a well-known
terrorism-case attorney in federal court, said the men were disappointed they
didn't secure acquittals across the board. But he argued the outcome was still
dramatic.

obtained by The Times, notes his disapproval in the actions of the seven

benefits 07 Feb 2014 The US Senate
failed to move forward with a three-month extension of federal unemployment
benefits yesterday, leaving 1.7 million long-term unemployed workers without any
c-sh assistance. The vote on Thursday fell one short of the 60-vote supermajority required to
end debate, with a handful of Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the
measure. Even if the bill were to pass the Senate, it would still have to clear

not be killed. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation
(DEC) has unveiled a proposal that would kill 2,200 mute swans by 2025. The
DEC's proposal "Management Plan for Mute Swans in New York State" calls for the
elimination of all free-ranging mute swans. The plan would use taxpayer m-ney to
systematically kill these charismatic creatures... We urge New York to use
alternative methods of population control. (Petition)
