Lockdown in Cardiff: City turned into high security 'prison' with 10 mile 'ring of steel' ahead of Nato conference 27 Aug 2014 Cardiff city centre has been turned into a high security 'prison' with 10 miles of fencing - which is being dubbed the 'ring of steel' - ahead of the Nato conference next week. Police have erected the nine feet high security fencing around Celtic Manor resort in Newport where Barack Obama, David Cameron and other world leaders will meet in Wales on September 4 and 5, as well as the city centre. It comes as former foreign office minister, Kim Howells, issued fears that home grown Islamic State terrorists could be planning to attack the 2014 summit.

Former MI6 counter-terrorism chief warns against rush to overhaul UK laws 25 Aug 2014 Britain should resist a rush to overhaul its fundamental legal principles in the face of an "unproven threat" from homegrown militants fighting in Syria and Iraq, the former global counter-terrorism director of MI6 has said. In an interview with the Guardian, Richard Barrett criticised government plans for new laws to tackle British extremists and warned against Boris Johnson's suggestion that Britons who travel to Iraq or Syria should be presumed guilty of involvement in terrorism unless they can prove their innocence...In a newspaper column described as "draconian" by the former attorney general, Johnson called for British jihadists to lose their citizenship, proposed the return of control orders and urged David Cameron to intervene against Islamic State (Isis) militarily. The home secretary, Theresa May, said last week that banning orders for extremist groups would be considered again -- even if they "fall short of the legal threshold for terrorist proscription" -- alongside powers to stop radical preachers.

Activist website Indymedia shuts down after police raid --The Bristol site is 'now officially closed for good' following the police raid. 28 Aug 2014 (UK) Police accessed servers belonging to the Bristol branch of activist news website Indymedia in a move that later 'forced organisers to close it down'. The raid is believed to be the latest effort in the long pursuit of the "Bristol unabomber". A copy of the production order, marked restricted but seen by The Times, authorises officers to seize "special procedure" journalistic material.

Al Qaeda magazine hints of imminent attack; urges bombing of military targets, oil tankers 28 Aug 2014 A new English-language Al Qaeda [al-CIAduh] magazine features a how-to article on making car bombs and suggests terror targets in the United States, including casinos in Las Vegas, oil tankers and military colleges, and implies that an attack is imminent. The online publication [likely produced in Langley, Virginia], called "Palestine-Betrayal of the Guilty Conscience Al-Malahem" and put out by the media arm of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, calls for Muslims around the world to follow "the recipe" provided to set off car bombs in crowded venues...There is a suggested list of targets for lone-wolf, or individually executed, terror attacks, including New York's Times Square, casinos and night clubs in Las Vegas, oil tankers and trains, the Georgia Military College, the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, and General Atomics defense contractor in San Diego.

US intelligence: 300 Americans fighting alongside Islamic State [Yeah, that would be their handlers.] 27 Aug 2014 The United States government is tracking as many as 300 Americans supposedly fighting with Islamic State, the jihadist group with a heavy presence in parts of Syria and Iraq, according to senior US officials. Washington is worried that radicalized foreign fighters could become a risk to the US if they return to employ skills learned overseas to carry out attacks, anonymous US officials said, according to the Washington Times. "We know that there are several hundred American passport holders running around with ISIS in Syria or Iraq," a senior US official said.

Second American killed fighting for ISIS 28 Aug 2014 A second American from the Minneapolis area has been killed while fighting for the Islamic State of of Iraq and Syria, according to family and friends. The death follows that of Douglas McCain, an American who grew up in Minnesota. McCain, 33, was killed while fighting for ISIS in Syria over the weekend. According to jihadist tweets and social media, the second American was not killed in Syria but was killed in Iraq on or around August 17.

American killed fighting for Isis, White House confirms 26 Aug 2014 An American fighting for the Islamic State was killed over the weekend in Syria, US officials have said. The United States had been aware that Douglas McCain, 33, a one-time aspiring rapper and basketball fan from California, was in Syria, the White House said, confirming his death. McCain, who converted from Christianity to Islam about a decade ago, was killed in fighting against the al-Nusra Front, a group linked to al-Qaida [al-CIAduh] and blacklisted by the United States, US media reports said.

Video of James Foley beheading 'may have been staged' 25 Aug 2014 A film purporting to show the beheading of James Foley was probably staged, according to a forensic science company, which suggests the American journalist's execution may have been carried out off-camera. A blip in the footage, released on social media last week by Islamic State militants, indicated that Foley may have had to repeat a line as he read a script to camera while kneeling in the sand with his hands tied. The footage was most likely edited later using "slick post-production techniques", according to the analysis for The Times in London by an unnamed international forensic science company that has worked for police forces across Britain, the news organisation claimed.

U.S. relies on Persian Gulf bases for airstrikes in Iraq 26 Aug 2014 The U.S. military is relying on bases in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere in the Middle East to carry out airstrikes in Iraq, but is masking the locations and other details about the units and aircraft involved to avoid embarrassing partners [aka other terrorists] in the region. Swiss President Says Concerned With US Plan to Supply Nuclear Fuel to Ukraine 28 Aug 2014 Swiss President and Chairperson-in-Office of the OSCE Didier Burkhalter shared Russia's concern over nuclear security due to US intention to supply nuclear fuel to Ukraine and urged Moscow to address the International Atomic Energy Agency. "We share your opinion regarding the nuclear security problem. Nuclear security represents a key problem for the Swiss nuclear policy," Burkhalter wrote in a letter to Vladimir Gutenev, first deputy chairman of Russia's State Duma committee on industry.

Two NATO warships heading to Black Sea - report 26 Aug 2014 A US Navy destroyer and a French frigate are expected to enter the waters of the Black Sea next week, a diplomatic and military source said. "Two NATO warships at once will arrive in the Black Sea on September 3. They are US Navy's destroyer USS Ross and frigate, Commandant Birot, of the naval forces of France," the unnamed source told RIA-Novosti news agency. There's currently one NATO ship present in the Black Sea, with French surveillance ship, Dupuy de Lome, expected to remain in the area until September 5.

Kiev loses control of Novoazovsk, rebel troops advance in southeast Ukraine 28 Aug 2014 Kiev's troops had to leave the eastern Ukrainian city of Novoazovsk to save their lives, said the country's Security and Defense Council. The authorities admitted that self-defense forces are advancing and leading a counteroffensive in the southeast. Along with Novoazovsk, Kiev troops have lost control over the villages of Amvrosiivka and Starobeshevo in the Donetsk Region of Eastern Ukraine. According to Ukraine's Security and Defense Council, on Wednesday Kiev’s troops were shelled by Grad rocket launchers and then attacked by two military columns of self-defense troops.

Putin calls on Ukraine militia to let blocked Kiev troops to cross into Russia 28 Aug 2014 President Putin has called on the self-defense militias in Ukraine to provide Kiev's military units blocked in the east of the country with a safe humanitarian corridor to cross into Russia. "It is obvious that the militia has reached a considerable success in curbing Kiev's military operation, that had been a deadly threat to the population of Donbass and already led to heavy casualties among civilians," the Russian leader said in a statement. As a result of militias' counter-offense, large numbers of Ukrainian troops - many of whom were taking part in Kiev's so-called anti-terrorist operation "against their will" and "just following orders" - have been surrounded, the President added.

Number of Ukrainian refugees in Russia close to 1 million --Ukrainian refugees should be given the right to live where they want, says Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov 27 Aug 2014 The number of Ukrainian refugees in Russia has nearly reached 1 million, Russia's top diplomat said Wednesday. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said at the Seliger-2014 all-Russian youth forum in the Tver Region northwest of Moscow that Ukrainian refugees should be given the right to live where they want. The minister cited UN data in line with which more than 22,000 people left Donetsk and Lugansk last week, adding that refugees are afraid to use the so-called humanitarian corridors provided by Kiev as they are unsafe.

Ebola Outbreak Could Infect 20,000 People 28 Aug 2014 More than 20,000 people could become infected with the deadly ebola virus, the World Health Organisation has said. The UN health agency warned the actual number of current ebola cases in hard-hit areas could be 12,000 - four times higher than the number confirmed at present. In what amounted to be a bleak assessment of the disease, the WHO said it believed the virus was still being spread in a "substantial number of localities" and added that "the outbreak continues to accelerate".

Fukushima court rules against Tepco in suicide case 26 Aug 2014 The Fukushima District Court ruled Tuesday that Tokyo Electric Power Co. was responsible for a woman's suicide following the March 2011 nuclear disaster, ordering the utility to pay 49 million yen in damages in a landmark ruling that could set a precedent for other claims against the utility. It was the first ruling on a lawsuit in which compensation has been sought over a suicide linked to the disaster that created serious radiation contamination. Some 125,000 Fukushima residents continue to live as evacuees.

Sister of Alleged Boston Marathon Bombers Arrested for Bomb Threat 27 Aug 2014 The sister of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly threatening a Harlem woman. According to the New York Police Department, Aliana Tsarnaeva, who lives in North Bergen, New Jersey, allegedly called the victim on Monday, saying, "I have people that can go over there and put a bomb on you." The NYPD believes that the alleged victim is the mother of Tsarnaeva's boyfriend's child.

Sanders weighs Clinton challenge 26 Aug 2014 Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) is gearing up for a presidential primary challenge against Hillary Clinton and hopes to capitalize on Democratic concerns over Clinton's coziness with Wall Street banks [and the US war machine]. Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Senate Democrats, plans to travel to two crucial presidential battleground states next month. Sanders has not said whether he would run as an independent or a Democrat.

White House considers proposals by corporate lobbyists to sharply increase legal immigration, provide hundreds of thousands of new green cards for high-tech workers 27 Aug 2014 The White House is considering proposals from business and immigrant rights groups that are pressing President Obama to provide hundreds of thousands of new green cards for high-tech workers and the relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The behind-the-scenes lobbying comes as Obama prepares to announce a series of executive actions that could include plans to defer the deportations of millions of people living in the country illegally, most of whom are Hispanic. Opponents of such proposals, including many Republicans, have argued that increasing the number of immigrants allowed into the country to work could harm American workers in search of jobs in an economy still recovering from the effects of a global recession. Useless is as useless does: Harry Reid backs military gear to local police 26 Aug 2014 Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he supports keeping the flow of military surplus equipment to local police departments -- though he backs increasing oversight on how it is used. The protests in Ferguson, Missouri, have drawn a police response that includes law enforcement officials armed with weaponry that several lawmakers have criticized as over-militarized in appearance, with camouflage-clad officers wielding heavy weapons and armored vehicles. Many local police departments are able to acquire military-grade arms and equipment through the Defense Department's "1033" program, established by Congress in the '90s, which allows that equipment to trickle to the police.

They gathered at Albany Avenue and Main Street to march on Hartford police headquarters Wednesday evening. "Drop those charges! They tased him!" protesters shouted during the rally.

Rally outside US Embassy to support parents of teenager Michael Brown 27 Aug 2014 Anti-racism activists are staging a protest outside the US Embassy following the shooting of black teenager Michael Brown in Missouri. The demonstration was organised by campaign group Stand Up To Racism and called on the US government to punish police officers involved in the shooting of the unarmed 18-year-old. A number of high profile speakers spoke at the event in Grosvenor Square, including Labour MP Diane Abbott, Marcia Rigg and speakers from Unite Against Racism.

NJ Subpoenas Christie Phone Records in Bridge Jam Scandal 28 Aug 2014 New Jersey lawmakers investigating the George Washington Bridge lane closures have subpoenaed AT&T for phone records of a top aide to Gov. Chris Christie. Lawmakers are requesting a month of data, including text messages, sent or received by Regina Egea. She testified in July that she texted the governor her thoughts about December testimony on the bridge probe but later deleted the messages. It is not clear whether AT&T will turn over the records without a search warrant.

Global warming impacts 'severe, widespread, and irreversible', UN warns --Urgent action needed to tackle man-made climate change, leaked report warns 27 Aug 2014 The world faces "severe, widespread and irreversible" effects of climate change unless it takes urgent action to limit global warming by cutting back on burning fossil fuels, the United Nations has warned in a leaked draft report. Man-made global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions is already here and its effects "might already be considered dangerous", according to the draft of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report. Extreme weather such as floods, heat waves and droughts are expected to become more common while climate change may even worsen the risk of violent conflicts, the report warns.
