100 speeches. 100 reasons.

No matter where you look, Heroes are speaking out, sounding the alarm.

Senator Markey from Massachusetts has been active, spoken out and held rallies to draw attention to the issue.

Below are articles about Senator Sheldon Whitehouse from the State of Rhode Island.

Please follow their comments, support and contribute as you can to protect our planet and its inhabitants.

Next month Pope Francis will release his encyclical on the environment, lending a strong voice and considerable influence to our moral obligation to protect Creation. And with the impacts of global warming growing more severe – and putting the most vulnerable at risk – the need for action is stronger than ever. We have only a short window of time to get emissions under control before we lock in a dangerously unstable climate. Check out these shocking facts about the recent impacts of climate change, and then share them with your friends and family to help us spread the word!
1. We just hit the highest-ever level of CO2 in the atmosphere globally – for a whole month straight.
This spring, CO2 in the atmosphere reached 400 parts per million at measuring sites around the world – a high-water mark for the amount of contaminants in the atmosphere. And that amount of CO2 is 50ppm worse than what most scientists consider a safe level to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

2. California’s drought has killed more than 12 million trees in just the past few years.
High temperatures, low snowpack, and lack of rainfall have killed millions of trees in California. The state’s national forests are now filled with 999,000 acres of dead trees. With forest fire season around the corner, all that dry wood puts the region at great risk of wildfire. In some areas, the number of tree deaths has almost doubled just since last July.
Forest fires are a natural part of the California ecosystem, but the current rate is almost double the historical rate. All those fires just put more black carbon into the atmosphere, and undermine the ability of our forests to absorb carbon dioxide.

3. Doctors say their patients’ health is already being harmed by climate change.
The National Medical Association found that almost nine in 10 of its members said climate change impacted their patient care. Doctors are already seeing more respiratory problems and heat-related illness. And if climate change continues, this will be only the beginning.

4. Climate change may be contributing to earthquakes like the one in Nepal.
Heavy monsoon seasons and rising sea levels will put pressure on tectonic plates – leading to more frequent earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Scientists believe that even small increases in sea level will increase volcanic eruptions.

5. The sea level is rising faster than we thought.
New satellite data shows that the rate of sea level rising has accelerated since 1993 as ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica have melted. The study warns that sea level rise puts coastal cities like New York, Tampa, and New Orleans at risk as “once-in-a-lifetime” floods become more frequent.

This is how I define commitment:

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island is preparing to deliver his 100th “Time To Wake Up” speech on the Senate floor urging his fellow senators to support action on climate change.

For years, Senator Whitehouse has delivered a speech each week the Senate has been in session. He draws attention to the environmental, public health, and economic threats of our changing climate. He is willing to stand up to Big Polluters and their climate change denying allies, and LCV is standing with him.

To mark Senator Whitehouse’s 100th speech, LCV is excited to announce a special opportunity for LCV members like you to chat with him directly. We’re hosting a Google Hangout video conference with him on Thursday, May 21 at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Show your support for Senator Whitehouse’s climate leadership and join our LIVE conversation. Sign up for the Google Hangout now!

There are too many climate change deniers in the Senate, supported by the Koch brothers and their dirty polluter money, spewing misinformation, and putting our health and environment at risk. They’re even attacking the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which will set the first-ever standards for carbon pollution from power plants.

Fortunately, week after week, we can count on Senator Whitehouse to set the record straight. When Senator Inhofe brings snowballs to the Senate floor, Senator Whitehouse brings facts — facts backed up by 97% of the world’s top scientists, by NASA, by the Pentagon, by the leaders of major religions and large corporations, and by most of the American public. Help us show him that we’ve got his back.

Tune in to LCV’s Google Hangout with Senator Whitehouse on addressing climate change. RSVP here!

Senator Whitehouse is elevating the conversation about climate change and talking about real solutions. Will you join us for this important conversation on Thursday, May 21?

Every week that the Senate is in session I give a speech on climate change. Yesterday evening I gave my 100th speech.
I’m from Rhode Island, the Ocean State, so urging Congress to take action on climate change is something I’m deeply committed to.
The science is irrefutable. Climate change is a real and present threat to our country. Our action is needed now more than ever. Will you join me, Senators Warren, Boxer, Baldwin, Durbin, Schumer, and Franken, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Environmental Defense Fund to demand that Congress take immediate action on Climate Change?
Join us. Demand Congress take action on climate change.
I’m proud of my 100 speeches. But I’m frustrated that I have to make them in the first place. And with the current makeup of the Senate, we have a lot of work ahead of us. I’m prepared to make 100 more speeches and 100 more after that until Congress takes action.
Stand with us and tell Congress enough is enough. It’s time to take action on climate change.
Yesterday I highlighted 100 reasons we need to take action on climate change. Whatever your reasons, thank you for your commitment. The fight continues, and victory beckons.

TAKE ACTION »

Earlier this week, I gave my 100th climate change speech on the Senate floor.

My message? We need action from Congress. But right now, more than half of Senate Republicans deny human-caused climate change, and refuse to address it.

I’ve got a message for them: Climate change is real. Rising and warming oceans are having a profound effect on the people of Rhode Island, so this hits close to home for me. I’ve comforted families whose homes have been taken by the sea. I've had lifelong Rhode Island fishermen tell me, "Sheldon, it's getting weird out there."

More important, the American people have a message for them. They want climate action, particularly younger people.

That’s why I have confidence Republicans will wake up and address one of the most pressing issues of our time -- if we keep the pressure on. No pressure; no action.

Please show me your support for keeping the pressure on. Will you help me address climate change -- no matter how long it takes -- by supporting my Senate campaign?
