Matt Patrick wants his old job back. The former 3rd Barnstable District state representative announced he will again be running for the seat. Patrick (D-Falmouth) held the seat for five consecutive terms from 2001 to 2011.
Patrick lost to Falmouth Republican David Vieira in 2010. Vieira ran unopposed in both the Republican primary and general election in 2012 and 2014.
In 2014 Patrick set his sights on the Senate seat held by Therese Murray after she announced she would not seek re-election. The campaign ended a three-year absence from state politics for Patrick. Patrick lost the race to Vinny deMacedo (R-Plymouth). Both Patrick and deMacedo ran unopposed in the state primary that year.
Announcing his run for the 3rd Barnstable District, Patrick said, "I believe that if we talk candidly about the issues facing our communities and each other, we can lead the way into a brighter future where people don't have to worry as much about how to get through the day."
In a release, Patrick called income inequality a key issue and said it is "the root of many of our problems in the district and the Commonwealth".
"I'm a firm believer that government should be used to improve the lives of people", Patrick said. "My hope is that we can get back on track not only in Bourne, Falmouth and Mashpee, but in the Commonwealth."
An official announcement will be made on Friday, October 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Oysters Too, 876 East Falmouth Highway in East Falmouth.
