UNDER INVESTIGATION

Dog left for dead near Middleboro/Lakeville town line remains under investigation

Posted Feb. 17, 2016

While many area residents have been happy to hear of Gus the service dog's safe return home last week, another K9-related story was also breaking, this one leaving many outraged and saddened.
Last Thursday, Feb. 11, a male White Shepherd dog, possible mix, was found deceased on Long Point Road just over the Middleboro/Lakeville town line in Middleboro. According to the Lakeville and Middleboro Animal Control Officers, who both observed the dog's body upon the report, say evidence indicated that the dog was still alive when left in the snow for dead, and injured prior.
“The dog was … still alive when left there, by the marks he left struggling in the snow,” Lakeville ACO David Frates wrote on social media.
"Due to the extreme temperatures it would be difficult to determine the length of time that the dog was alive before he passed," said Middleboro ACO Kelly Jarabek.
"The injuries that the dog had were confirmed by the veterinarian as severe pressure sores. Unfortunately this dog suffered long before he was placed on the side of the road. The dog was severely emaciated."
According to Jarabek, there's been no shortage of leads offered up by residents since the story surfaced but so far to no avail. She also said there are factors to consider, such as the possibility that at whatever home this dog came from, there may be other animals still suffering like he did before he was abandoned.
"There have been a few leads that we have followed up on, but unfortunately the person that did this has not been found. We have several more leads to check and with the public's help, more every day. This dog may not be from Middleboro. He could have come from any of the surrounding towns. We not only want to find out who did this, but we want to ensure there are no other animals in this home that need medical attention," Jarabek said.
"We want to make sure that the public is aware of the situation and feel the importance of calling us with any information that could lead us to the person or persons responsible. We would also like to let the public know that there are many options out there to help. If someone feels financially, emotionally or physically unable to care for an animal, please call for help. If your local animal control is unable to help, they can get you the resources that you need. There are always humane options."
Jarabek also mentioned the dog's age was determined to be 5-plus. Due to the dog's condition when found, it could not be determined whether or not he was a purebred White Shepherd.
If any residents recognize the dog or think they may have helpful information pertaining to this investigation, please contact the Middleborough Police Department at 508-947-1212, or Lakeville Police Department at 508-947-4422.
For animal-related help, call Middleboro Animal Control at 508-946-2455 or Lakeville Animal Control at 508-947-3891.
