Exxon's Deceit and New England

BRad speaking to audience

Corporations that deny climate change also deny the need to build facilities that are resilient against the inevitable effects of climate change.

That's why Conservation Law Foundation has served formal notice of a lawsuit against ExxonMobil for its decades-long campaign to discredit climate change and endanger people and communities.

After a recent exposé by InsideClimate News revealed that ExxonMobil engaged in a deliberate cover-up of climate science for more than thirty years, CLF launched its own investigation.

Our work revealed that their deceit spilled onto New England soil. ExxonMobil knowingly and unlawfully misled regulators about whether its Everett facility can withstand rising seas, more intense precipitation, and other climate impacts without spewing oil and other toxic pollutants into adjoining neighborhoods, the Mystic River, and the Boston Harbor – in violation of both the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

We cannot let this reckless behavior stand. ExxonMobil must be held accountable for its indifference to the public in the face of potential catastrophe.

Battling big, well-funded giants like ExxonMobil is not new to us. For 50 years, CLF has taken on powerful opponents who pollute our air and water and damage our climate… and won. But seeing these long battles through to victory isn't easy. They take time and they take resources. As a nonprofit, we rely on you to fund this work.

As a member of the CLF community, I wanted to share this groundbreaking legal action with you and look forward to keeping you updated as the suit progresses.

Together we can make ExxonMobil pay for its campaign of deceit and for putting communities at risk and ensure that New England continues to thrive – not just for today, but for generations to come.

Gratefully,
