"Together we will determine the course of America and the world for many, many years to come."

 

Breaking: Pence sworn in as 48th vice president of the United States | 20 Jan 2017 | With his hand on a pair of Bibles and a pledge before God to defend the Constitution, former Indiana Gov. Mike Pence took the oath of office during a swearing-in ceremony on Capitol Hill. In doing so, he became the nation's 48th vice president and the sixth from Indiana in the state's 200-year history. It was a fitting beginning of a new chapter for Pence, who considers his conservative Christian values the driving force of his 16-year political career.

Bush and Bill Clinton, joined hundreds of elected officials gathered at the west front of the U.S. Capitol, anarchists marched through the city’s streets, toppling over news boxes, smashing bus stop windows, spray-painting buildings and, in one case, bashing in the windows of a black limo-sine. The acts of violence prompted helmeted police to chase the protesters with batons, hose them with pepper spray and fire flash bangs into their ranks. The sound of explosions and sirens filled the cool air - marking the most intense confrontations in a morning during which protesters had successfully shut down at least a few checkpoints.

Anti-Trump Protests Intensify on Morning of Inauguration | 20 Jan 2017 | Protests ramped up Friday morning in the nation's capital ahead of the inauguration festivities for Donald Trump, with tensions flaring after a night of turbulent demonstrations that included police in riot gear and the use of pepper spray. With hundreds of thousands descending on D.C. this weekend, security checkpoints around the Capitol were choked with foot traffic as inauguration ceremony ticket-holders weaved through protesters to get to the Capitol. The protesters chanted and carried signs -- many attacking Trump or making other political and social statements, including "Not my president," "No Islamophobia" and "Black Lives Matter."

Outrage at 'traitorous' CNN for 'inciting violence' with report that Obama cabinet member will be president if Trump and Pence are killed at the inauguration -- CNN speculated about what would happen if Trump was killed in inauguration --It reported that an Obama-selected secretary would be sworn in as president --They also showed scenes from a new TV show that depicts a Capitol bombing | 19 Jan 2017 | Wednesday's startling report, titled 'Disaster could put Obama appointee in Oval Office,' speculated on what might happen if Trump, Mike Pence and the Congressional leaders were all killed during the ceremony. During the segment they also used scenes from ABC show 'Designated Survivor', which depicts what would happen if the Capitol building - the venue for Trump's swearing in - was bombed and the Commander-in-chief killed. The report concluded that a Democrat would take the vice-president's place in the White House in the event of such an attack, worrying some that venomous anti-Trump protesters might attempt a treasonous attack on the event. Critics suggested that's exactly what CNN - which was derided as the 'Clinton News Network' during the Trump election campaign, and denied questions at his recent press conference - is hoping for.

Trump inauguration boycott grows to third of Democratic caucus | 18 Jan 2017 | Roughly 60 House Democrats, or nearly one-third of the 194-member caucus, plan to be elsewhere Friday when President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office, citing objections from Russian hacking to his feud with Rep. John Lewis of Georgia. At least two more Democrats -- Reps. Janice D. Schakowsky of Illinois and Grace Meng of New York -- announced Wednesday that they would hop aboard the boycott wagon in a show of partisan congressional opposition that may be unlike anything else in modern history. "It seems fairly unprecedented this number of people would boycott and in such a formalized manner," said Barbara Perry, presidential studies director of the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

 

These Democrats aren't attending Trump's inauguration | 17 Jan 2017 | Dozens of Democratic lawmakers are boycotting President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, particularly after revelations of Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 election and his rebuke of civil rights icon John Lewis. No senators have yet said they are boycotting, though Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has left open the possibility. Some members have said they will be protesting in Washington and in their districts instead...Here's a list of Democrats who have publicly said they won't be at Friday's ceremony.

 

Ohio State offers Inauguration Day 'safe space' | 20 Jan 2017 | Ohio State University will offer a "safe space" for students today as the nation inaugurates Republican Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States. "The purpose of this event is to foster a safe space for the Ohio State campus community to connect with one another, support aspirations, and empower growth and change," organizers state. The "I, too, am America" event is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will include three concurrent offerings from noon to 3 p.m.: a screening of the inauguration festivities in one room; another room set aside to "pause, reflect and share"; and a third swath of rooms for teach-ins by grad students, faculty and staff.

 

Not even the Girl Scouts are safe from the anti-Trump resistance | 19 Jan 2017 | Since George Washington took his oath of office in New York on April 20, 1789, America has held an inaugural parade celebrating the peaceful transition of power upon which the country is founded. For more than a century, some lucky members of the Nation's Capital council of the Girl Scouts of America have marched in that parade, alongside members of organizations from across the country. It doesn't appear the Girl Scouts has ever been scrutinized for its participation. But, as President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration approaches on Friday, the organization has come under fire for its (quadrennial, expected) decision to have 75 Girl Scouts march in the parade. Many of its critics say the girls should not march considering Trump's recorded comments about women and Vice President-elect Mike Pence's strong antiabortion views.

 

Obama's Ambassadors in Asia Make Final Plea for Dead TPP Corporate Takeover | 17 Jan 2017 | When hope of enacting the ambitious Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact corporate takeover ended in November, Max Baucus, the United States ambassador to China, was among the officials who had to grapple with disappointment. The partnership, called the TPP, was a hallmark of the [Wall Street-owned] Obama administration...When President Obama plucked Mr. Baucus in 2013 from the United States Senate to be the ambassador to China, he chose a politician with a record of promoting [U.S. job-killing] free trade. Last week Mr. Baucus took the unusual step, with five other American ambassadors in the Asia-Pacific region, of sending an open letter to Congress asking its members to support the pact...

 

Sanders backers take over California Democratic Party | 19 Jan 2017 | Supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) turned out en masse at ordinarily sleepy party caucuses earlier this month, electing a slate of delegates who could be poised to take over the largest Democratic Party organization outside of Washington, D.C. As final vote totals trickled in, Sanders backers claimed to have elected more than 650 delegates out of 1,120 available seats chosen at this month's caucuses. Those delegates will choose the next state Democratic Party chairman, along with other party officials. Sanders supporters say they hope to change the very nature of the Democratic Party.

 

2016 hottest year ever recorded - and scientists say human activity to blame --Final data confirms record-breaking temperatures for third year in a row --Earth has not been this warm for 115,000 years | 18 Jan 2017 | 2016 was the hottest year on record, setting a new high for the third year in a row, with scientists firmly putting the blame on human activities that drive climate change. The final data for 2016 was released on Wednesday by the three key agencies -- the UK Met Office and Nasa and Noaa in the US -- and showed 16 of the 17 hottest years on record have been this century. Direct temperature measurements stretch back to 1880, but scientific research indicates the world was last this warm about 115,000 years ago and that the planet has not experienced such high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for 4m years. In 2016, global warming delivered scorching temperatures around the world.

 

ISIS Destroys Ancient Theater, Tetrapylon in Palmyra, Syria Says | 20 Jan 2017 | Two famous ancient structures in the city of Palmyra have been destroyed by ISIS forces, Syria's antiquities chief says. The Tetrapylon and the facade of the city's Roman theater have both been almost completely demolished, the official says, according to NPR. "Activist Khaled al-Homsi, who is from Palmyra, shared satellite imagery to Twitter, which appears to confirm the scale of the damage," Alison reports. "The face of the Roman theater is a pile of rubble and only four of the Tetrapylon's 16 columns appear to be standing."

 

US planes strike Isis fighters in Libya 'planning attacks in Europe' | 19 Jan 2017 | US warplanes have conducted massive airstrikes near the Libyan city of Sirte against Islamic State members believed to be planning attacks in Europe, in an attack which killed 80 people. A month after the US military declared a successful conclusion to a months-long air campaign against the militant group, B-2 bombers made a 9,400km (5,800-mile) journey on Wednesday night from a Missouri airbase to target what Pentagon officials described as two Isis training camps 45km (28 miles) south-west of Sirte. Initial US estimates were that approximately 80 people were killed, who the Pentagon described as Isis fighters.

 

Bomb threats made to Jewish community centers in 17 states | 18 Jan 2017 | Jewish community centers in at least 17 states received bomb threats Wednesday, causing evacuations in numerous cases. At least 32 Jewish institutions reported getting threats made via phone, mostly from a live caller with a woman's voice. Two weeks ago, similar threats were issued at 16 locations but the call was usually a recording. Jewish institutions in seven states reportedly evacuated hundreds of people...None of the threatened institutions found a bomb.

 

Bomb threats called into JCCs, synagogues in CT, across country | 18 Jan 2017 | Threatening phone calls were made to Jewish community centers, a Jewish day school and a synagogue in Connecticut, which were similar to ones called into others across the country. The live caller stated that there was a bomb in each of the buildings. The threats were made over the phone at locations in West Hartford and Woodbridge on Wednesday morning.

 

Manchester United to employ full-time counter-terrorism manager | 18 Jan 2017 | Manchester United believe they are the first sports club in the country to have a full-time counter-terrorism manager. The appointment was revealed at a recent fans' forum and it is understood the role will be filled by a former inspector from Greater Manchester police's specialist search unit. United's final match of last season against Bournemouth was called off after what proved to be a fake bomb, left behind following a training exercise, was found in a lavatory. The game had to be played four days after the FA Cup final.

 

FBI: Fort Lauderdale shooting suspect says he carried out the attack on behalf of ISIS | 17 Jan 2017 | Esteban Santiago, who was arrested on charges of killing five people and injuring six more in a shooting earlier this month at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, said he carried out the attack on behalf of the Islamic State, according to the FBI. FBI special agent Michael Ferlazzo and other agents testified at Santiago's bond hearing on Tuesday, and Ferlazzo said Santiago had claimed to have spoken with other purported jihadis [on] websites inspired by the Islamic State, the terrorist group also known as ISIS or ISIL.

 

CNN's Marc Lamont Hill: Blacks meeting with Trump are 'mediocre Negroes' | 17 Jan 2017 | CNN's Marc Lamont Hill referred to Trump diversity team member Bruce LeVell as a part of a group of "mediocre Negroes" who met with the president-elect. The characterization, which includes Pastor Darryl Scott and television host and comedian Steve Harvey, came during a panel discussion with host Don Lemon on "CNN Tonight" on Monday. "They (the Trump transition team) keep bringing up comedians and and actors athletes to represent black interests. It's demeaning, it's disrespectful, and it's condescending," Hill argued. "Bring some people up there with expertise, Donald Trump, don't just bring up people to entertain."

 

Feds seek to indict Garner chokehold cop before Trump takes office | 18 Jan 2017 | The Obama administration is scrambling to secure an indictment in the racially charged, NYPD killing of Eric Garner before President-elect Donald Trump takes office Friday and potentially scraps the case, sources told The Post. Federal prosecutors from Washington, DC, called cops in front of a Brooklyn grand jury Wednesday, and more witnesses are expected to testify Thursday, the sources said. The panel will be asked to consider civil-rights charges against white NYPD cop Daniel Pantaleo before the end of the day, the sources said.
