CC News Letter 14 June - US stages provocation in the Persian Gulf

Dear Friend,

In a press conference that immediately evoked memories of the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday claimed Iran was behind alleged attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman without presenting one single shred of evidence.

Nearly a billion people are facing climate change hazards globally, with the Asia-Pacific region housing twice as many people living in areas with high exposure than all other regions combined, says the new annual Global Peace Index (GPI) released on Wednesday by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). Another new study finds: Intensifying climate change is estimated to increase future risks of conflict.

US stages provocation in the Persian Gulf
by Bill Van Auken

The Trump administration’s thuggish secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, made a presentation to the media Thursday afternoon in which he asserted that Iran was responsible for suspected attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman near the strategic Strait of Hormuz. These charges carry with them the threat of a war that would transform much of the Eurasian landmass into a battleground

Anti-EVM Convention Calls For Nationwide Movement And Election Boycott
by Countercurrents Team

A convention organzed by EVM Virodhi Rashtriya Jan Andolan in Mumbai has called upon political parties and the people to boycott the forthcoming elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Haryana and Sikkim if they are not conducted using ballot papers. An eight-point resolution passed by convention said the people of India have very little faith in the outcome of the recently-held general elections, which have been clearly stolen by manipulating the EVM-VVPAT systems. The meeting demanded that an investigation be carried out under the guidance of a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court, headed by the Chief Justice of India.

Julian Assange and the Scales of Justice: Exceptions, Extraditions and Politics
by Dr Binoy Kampmark

The Home Secretary of the United Kingdom did his thing, which was little in the way of disagreement.  The superpower has issued a request; the retainer would comply.  This week, the US Department Justice Department formally sought the extradition of Julian Assange.  The process was certified by Sajid Javid, a man rather distracted of late.  He is, after all, seeking to win the hearts of the Conservatives and replace Theresa May as Prime Minster.  Boris Johnson, not Wikileaks and press freedom, is on his mind.

Encouraging Illegal Planting of Bt Brinjal in India: Political Posturing, Displaying Contempt for the Wider Public Interest
by Colin Todhunter

The reason why this crop made it into India’s fields in the first place was due to ‘approval by contamination’. India’s first and only legal GM crop cultivation – Bt cotton – was discovered in 2001 growing on thousands of hectares in Gujarat. In March 2002, it was approved for commercial cultivation. The pro-GMO lobby, having lost the debate on the need for and efficacy of GM, has again resorted to such tactics. It appears nothing has been learnt from the experience of an ill-thought-out experiment with Bt cotton that put many poor farmers in a corporate noose for the sake of Monsanto profit.

by Dr Madabhushi Sridhar

This is the life and death story of 61 Bhill tribe residents who are facing the danger of eviction from their home i.e., Rajasthan forest, since centuries, because of undue rejection of their claims under Forest Rights Act, 2006.

The Anatomy of Anger and Hatred in India
by Ajay Gudavarthy

Dominant social groups need to make the necessary distinction between legitimate anger to set right history and illegitimate hatred to push back history. For, anger is organic while hatred is manufactured.
