A TRAGEDY THAT MUST STOP: Last week, Yellowstone’s most famous and beloved wolf was shot and killed outside of the park, prompting a huge outcry from park visitors and scientists alike. The majestic wolf, known as 832F or simply ‘06’ by her fans because she was born in 2006, was a favorite among park visitors because of her incredible intelligence and devotion to her pups. One visitor described watching ’06 outsmart and lure 16 wolves from another pack away from the den in order to protect her pups. She was the alpha female of the famed Lamar Canyon wolf pack and her death was a huge loss to behavioral scientists who were studying the pack’s movement. ’06 spent 95% of her time in the park—unfortunately, wolves can’t read borders on a map, and she was shot and killed while still wearing her radio collar outside of Yellowstone’s protective boundaries.
So far, 265 wolves have already been shot or killed in the Northern Rockies. This tragedy cannot be allowed to continue—for the sake of wolves like 06 and the health of the ecosystem.
