Every day in the Manhattan and Brooklyn Animal Care & Control shelters, you will see a shelter manager walking from cage to cage with a laptop (it used to be a clipboard, until the notoriously underfunded AC&C decided to spend money on laptops), making snap decisions about which dogs and cats to put on the nightly kill list.

Most often, the decision comes down to merely whether or not the dog or cat is coughing from the cold they caught in the shelter.

It is with a great sense of loss that we share the tragic news of a plane crash that took the life of longtime Pilots N Paws Pilot Timothy E. Johnson of Florida...

. Tim had been flying Pilots N Paws rescue missions since June, 2009. He was not on a rescue mission at the time of this flight.

He is pictured here on his very first PNP flight to save a Basset named Kroozer. Those who worked on this transport remember Tim's excitement for his first rescue mission.

Tim was a wonderfully sweet man. His generosity and kindness made him a dedicated pilot who was devoted to saving the lives of the animals he flew. Those who knew Tim took comfort in his refreshing sense of humor. Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and we hope that they find comfort in knowing what a positive impact Tim had on so many people and animals.
