When Russ Feingold was in the Senate, he
and I stood shoulder-to-shoulder as we worked to protect American consumers from
the excesses of greed unleashed by loosened banking regulations.
Too many Main Streets have paid the price
for risky gambling on Wall Street. We've got to make sure it never happens
again.
That's why, yesterday I was proud to
introduce the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act along with my Senate colleagues
Elizabeth Warren, John McCain, and Angus King.
Our bill will make our financial system
safer, diminish the chances of future financial crises, and reduce risk for
taxpayers by making bank bailouts a thing of the past.
But we're going to have a big fight on our
hands -- and progressives need to work together to get this bill passed.
Our bill would rebuild the firewall
separating investment banks -- that engage in riskier financial activities --
from traditional banks, where you and I and millions of American families have
savings and checking accounts.
This crucial financial firewall was
originally built with the 1933 Glass-Steagall bill after the Great Depression,
but Congress repealed most of the bill in 1999.
And we've seen where that got us: a
financial crisis that damaged our economy and hurt American families.

I know it's going to take a big grassroots
groundswell to beat the special interests who want to protect the status
quo.
That's why even though Russ isn't in the
Senate anymore, I'm so happy to be teaming up with Progressives United members
like you, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and more.
Together, we're asking everyone to stand with us -- and help get the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act passed.
Will you join us?
