Fukushima has 9 days to prevent 'unsafe' overheating 06 Jul 2014 Fukushima operator TEPCO has been forced to switch off the cooling system at mothballed Reactor Unit 5, after it was discovered that it had been leaking water. In nine days, if the system is not repaired, temperatures will exceed dangerous levels. Engineers have discovered that 1,300 liters of water leaked from a cooling system intended to stabilize the temperature of the spent fuel at the Reactor Unit 5, which was offline but loaded with fuel rods when the plant was damaged by the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

Taliban torch hundreds of 'NATO-supplying' fuel trucks near Kabul 05 Jul 2014 An assault by militants at a large parking lot on the outskirts of Afghan capital, Kabul, Friday night left at least 200 fuel tankers incinerated. The Taliban said the privately-owned tankers were targeted because they supply foreign troops. AP, meanwhile, reported that 400 tankers had been burned.

Six Jewish suspects arrested over death of Palestinian teenager 06 Jul 2014 Israel has arrested six Jewish suspects in the abduction and killing of a Palestinian teenager whose death sparked violent protests in Jerusalem and Israeli Arab towns, a security source said on Sunday. Tensions were also high along the Gaza border where Israel killed two Palestinian militants and wounded a third in one of about a dozen air strikes in response to rocket fire at southern Israeli towns. Hospital officials confirmed the fatalities, and the Israeli military confirmed it had bombed central Gaza.

Palestinian boy was burned alive, says official 05 Jul 2014 Mohamed Abu Khdeir, the Palestinian teenager who was kidnapped and murdered on Wednesday in a suspected revenge killing by Israeli extremists, was burned alive after suffering a head injury, the Palestinian attorney general has claimed. Caught on camera: Israeli police beating 15yo cousin of murdered Palestinian teen 05 Jul 2014 A shocking video, showing Israeli police officers savagely beating 15-year-old Palestinian-American Tarek Abu Khdeir - cousin of Mohammad Abu Khdeir who was burnt alive in East Jerusalem - has prompted outrage in the Palestinian community. The video shows two officers striking the detainee, who was handcuffed and lying on the floor. One of the officers seems to be sitting on the Palestinian, while his colleague is kicking and punching him. The youth is eventually dragged away by the police.

Hundreds hold protest at Israel embassy in London 05 Jul 2014 Over a thousand protesters have gathered in front of the Israeli embassy in central London to show outrage against Tel Aviv's ongoing aggression and attacks on the Palestinians, Press TV reports. Protesters attending the London rally have expressed anger and frustration at Israel for engaging in widespread violent clashes against the Palestinians over the past days. The unrest has grown across the region after the burned body of a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was found in a forest on July 2.

U.S. tightens security on electronics at overseas airports 06 Jul 2014 The U.S. Transportation Security Administration will not allow cellphones or other electronic devices on U.S.-bound planes at some overseas airports if the devices are not charged up, the agency said on Sunday. The new measure is part of the TSA's effort announced last week to boost security amid concerns that [terrorists] are plotting to blow up an airliner, U.S. officials said. As part of the increased scrutiny at certain airports, security agents may ask travelers to turn on their electronic devices at checkpoints and if they do not have power, the devices will not be allowed on planes, the TSA said.

CIA interrupts info about secret overseas nuclear project 06 Jul 2014 The Washington Post has published an exclusive report about the US National Security Agency's surveillance activities, but withheld information of "considerable intelligence value," including a secret overseas nuclear project. The Post said the report, which was published on Saturday, is based on a four-month investigation of a large collection of communications intercepted by the NSA from US digital networks. The newspaper said it obtained the intercepted conversations from former NSA surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Students Joining Battle to Upend Laws on Voter ID --College Students Claim Voter ID Laws Discriminate Based on Age 06 Jul 2014 Civil rights groups have spent a decade fighting requirements that voters show photo identification, arguing that this discriminates against African-Americans, Hispanics and the poor. This week in a North Carolina courtroom, another group will make its case that such laws are discriminatory: college students. Joining a challenge to a state law alongside the N.A.A.C.P., the American Civil Liberties Union and the Justice Department, lawyers for seven college students and three voter-registration advocates are making the novel constitutional argument that the law violates the 26th Amendment, which lowered the voting age to 18 from 21.

'Race to the Top' funds went to administration offices - study 05 Jul 2014 Bureaucrats are winning the Race to the Top. Less than a quarter of the 107 million that the school system received in federal Race to The Top funds last year was sent directly to school principals. The decision on how to spend most of the money - 83 million - was made by the central Department of Education, which channeled the federal funds to support staff, consultants and fringe benefits, according to a study by the Independent Budget Office.
