Nine out of 10 users in NSA-intercepted conversations are not original targets 06 Jul 2014 Nine out of 10 internet users found in a cache of NSA-intercepted conversations were not the original targets -- but landed in the agency's net anyway. The Washington Post revealed the stunningly high percentage of innocent web crawlers snared in the National Security Administration's web after a four-month examination of documents turned over by ex-agency contractor Edward Snowden...One analyst described a day's work: "1 target, 38 others on there."

Germany arrests alleged double agent accused of spying on Berlin's NSA inquiry for the U.S. 04 Jul 2014 German authorities have arrested a man identified by media as a German intelligence officer who allegedly passed secrets to the U.S. German media warned that if the man is found guilty, it would be "the biggest scandal involving a German-American double agent since the war," The Daily Telegraph reported. Federal prosecutors said that a 31-year-old German was arrested on July 2 on suspicion of spying for an unidentified foreign power.

German agent arrested for spying for US 04 Jul 2014 Police in Germany have arrested a man on suspicion of spying for the United States. The arrested man is a German citizen and a member of the country's own BND intelligence service. German media warned that if the case against him is proved, "it will be the biggest scandal involving a German-American double agent since the war". It is believed the arrested man is suspected of spying on a German parliamentary enquiry into the NSA affair.

XKeyscore exposed: How NSA tracks all German Tor users as 'extremists' 04 Jul 2014 The NSA has been revealed to mark and consider potential "extremists" all users of the internet anonymizer service Tor...Searching for encryption software like the Linux-based operating system Tails also places you on the NSA grid, as Lena Kampf, Jacob Appelbaum and John Goetz revealed on the German site Tagesschau. The report is based on analysis of the source code of the software used by NSA's electronic surveillance program XKeyscore.

NSAssociate Google begins yanking news articles in Europe 03 Jul 2014 Should Google be the arbiter on what is and is not publicly available on the Web? [Well, we know they do that *daily* with the CLG Newsletter, that's for sure!] What happens when a person's request to be anonymous conflicts with the freedom of the press? These are some of the questions being raised as Google begins to remove search results in its first implementation of the European Union's so-called right-to-be-forgotten ruling. The ruling lets people in the European Union submit a form to Google requesting that they be removed from its search results if they feel the information on them is outdated or reveals personal details they want to keep private. A team at Google then determines whether that person's corporation's right to be anonymous is more important than keeping that information front and center in its search results for ease of public access.

UK planned to train and equip 100,000 'rebels' for Syria shock and awe attack 03 Jul 2014 "The plan was called Extract, Equip, Train...a shock and awe attack that would allow the Syrians themselves to defeat Assad", reports Nick Hopkins. The UK drew up plans to train and equip a 100,000-strong Syrian rebel [terrorist] army to defeat President Bashar al-Assad, BBC Newsnight can reveal. The secret initiative, put forward two years ago, was the brainchild of the then most senior UK military officer, General Sir David Richards. It was considered by the PM and the National Security Council, as well as US officials, but was deemed too risky.

IDF twitter account hacked by Syrian Electronic Army, spreads nuclear leak alert 03 Jul 2014 An official Israeli Defense Force twitter account issued a warning of a possible nuclear leak at the country's research reactor on Thursday. The Tweet was soon deleted while officials reported a security breach and apologized. The Syrian Electronic Army has apparently taken credit for the hack, tweeting 'Long live Palestine!' via an IDF spokesperson's account. [Awesome!]

Palestinian boy was burned alive, says official 05 Jul 2014 Mohamed Abu Khdeir, the Palestinian teenager who was kidnapped and murdered on Wednesday in a suspected revenge killing by Israeli extremists, was burned alive after suffering a head injury, the Palestinian attorney general has claimed. The allegation is said to be based on initial postmortem findings that discovered soot deposits in his lungs suggesting he was still breathing when he was set on fire. The shocking details, if confirmed, would seem likely to exacerbate already toxic tensions.

'Thanks, Ukraine Air Force': Bombarded villagers accuse Kiev of killing civilians 03 Jul 2014 The village of Kondrashovka in eastern Ukraine lies devastated after shelling by Kiev troops which killed seven people. Bodies torn to pieces are strewn across the settlement and those who survived are asking: why did Kiev kill their families? At least five shells hit the settlement, destroying an entire street in the peaceful Lugansk region community, 25km from the city of Lugansk.

U.S. grounds entire F-35 fleet pending engine inspections 04 Jul 2014 The U.S. military said it had grounded the entire fleet of 97 Lockheed Martin Corp F-35 fighter jets until completion of additional inspections of the warplane's single engine built by Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp. The Pentagon's F-35 program office, Air Force and Navy issued directives on Thursday ordering the suspension of all F-35 flights after a June 23 fire on an Air Force F-35A jet at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, according to statements by the Pentagon and the F-35 program office.

Heads up! FEMA Drill to Test Emergency Preparedness at Va. Nuclear Plant --FEMA will assess state and local emergency response capabilities within 10-mile emergency planning zone, nearby support areas 04 Jul 2014 Federal officials are planning to test Virginia's ability to respond to an emergency at Dominion's North Anna nuclear power station. The Federal Emergency Management says the biennial emergency preparedness exercise at the plant about 40 miles northwest of Richmond will take place the week of July 7. [Let's hope the dirt-bags don't *go live* during the drill, as they did on 9/11.]

Cardiff teenager arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences --Teenager seized under section 5 of Terrorism Act 2006 02 Jul 2014 A teenager from Cardiff has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. The 18-year-old man lives in the Grangetown area of the Welsh capital, close to the inner-city areas where two young men who featured in an extremist recruitment video are from. He was seized under section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006 for assisting in the preparation of an act of terrorism.

Justices act in other health law mandate cases 01 Jul 2014 The Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed that its decision a day earlier extending religious rights to closely held corporations applies broadly to the contraceptive coverage requirement in the new health care law, not just the handful of methods the justices considered in their ruling. The justices did not comment in leaving in place lower court rulings in favor of businesses that object to covering all 20 methods of government-approved contraception.

Dow Closes Above 17,000 for First Time 03 Jul 2014 The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 17,000 for the first time on Thursday, a day when stocks were broadly higher after the American economy created many more jobs than forecast. The trading session ended early because of the Independence Day holiday. At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.54 percent at 17,068.26, a gain of 92.02 points...The Nasdaq composite index gained 28.19, or 0.63 percent, to 4,485.93.
