1,200-plus signatures will force referendum
The Cape Downwinders, a citizens group concerned about safety at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, has gathered enough signatures to place a nonbinding referendum question on the November state election ballot about expanding the emergency planning zone around the Plymouth plant.
The petitions, bearing more than 1,200 certified signatures collected from voters on the Cape and Islands, will be presented to the secretary of state in Boston today.
Proposed legislation to expand the emergency planning zone around the plant from 10 to 20 miles and to include Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties failed to make it out of committee before the close of this legislative session.
