Holy coincidence, Batman! Monsanto and Dept. of Defense fund company that could earn billions from Ebola treatment 31 July 2014 One fascinating development worth investigating further is that TEKMIRA Pharmaceuticals, a company working on an anti-Ebola drug, just received a 1.5 million cash infusion from none other than Monsanto. The press release, which states "Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation is a biopharmaceutical company focused on advancing novel RNAi therapeutics and providing its leading lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technology to pharmaceutical partners." Another press release about Tekmira reveals a 140 million contract with the U.S. military for Ebola treatment drugs.

'Training for this:' Atlanta hospital ready for opportunity to treat Ebola patients 1 Aug 2014 Faced with the prospect of coming face-to-face with Ebola at their Atlanta hospital, where its first documented Ebola cases ever are soon set to arrive, what did two nurses do? They canceled their vacation. "They said, 'We have been training for this,'" Dr. Bruce Ribner, who heads the Emory University Hospital unit where the two Americans with Ebola will be treated, told CNN. Online and on street corners, in homes and in businesses, the idea of purposefully bringing Ebola into the United States has rattled the nerves of many. "Why willingly bring infected ebola [sic] victims to this country?" wrote one woman. "Why purposely spread the infection?" [*Well.* Since you asked: See item, above.]

Dr Kent Brantly arrived in a specially equipped private plane at a military base before being driven to Emory University Hospital.

She told a summit of regional leaders that failure to contain Ebola could be "catastrophic" in terms of lives lost...Ebola kills up to 90% of those infected.

Obama executive order allows apprehension, detention of Americans with respiratory diseases 1 Aug 2014 On Thursday, Barack Obama signed an executive order that allows for the apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals with certain severe acute respiratory diseases, not including influenza. The executive order modifies one signed in 2003 by George W. Bush that allowed for the detention and quarantine of those with SARS. "Severe acute respiratory syndromes, which are diseases that are associated with fever and signs and symptoms of pneumonia or other respiratory illness, are capable of being transmitted from person to person, and that either are causing, or have the potential to cause, a pandemic, or, upon infection, are highly likely to cause mortality or serious morbidity if not properly controlled," the executive order reads. "This subsection does not apply to influenza."

North Dakota State Fair pigs test positive for H3N2 flu virus --It's the first time a flu virus has been confirmed at a North Dakota fair. 1 Aug 2014 Three pigs exhibited at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot last month have tested positive for a strain of swine flu, but it does not appear that the illness has spread to people. Results from the National Veterinary Services Laboratory show the pigs tested positive for the H3N2 influenza virus, according to the state Agriculture Department...State officials said anyone who experiences symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache and body aches after contact with animals should contact a doctor.

Obama administration censors 'significant portions' of CIA torture report, Feinstein delays its release 2 Aug 2014 The Obama administration censored significant portions of the findings of an investigation into the CIA's use of harsh interrogation methods on torture of suspected terrorists, forcing the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee to delay their release "until further notice." The postponement late Friday added to serious frictions over the investigation between the administration and lawmakers, who have been pressing for the swiftest, most extensive publication of the findings on one of darkest chapters in the CIA's 65-year history. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced the delay only hours after the White House returned the document to her after it completed its declassification review.

Soldier believed captured by Hamas was killed in action, says Israeli army 2 Aug 2014 Israel has said they have scientific evidence that Hadar Goldin, the soldier 'feared abducted by Hamas' on Friday in an ambush that shattered a humanitarian ceasefire, was killed in action during the attack. The announcement, by Israel's chief military rabbi, came just hours after prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu indicated that Israel's military operation was coming to an end...Earlier, Netanyahu said that, once demolition of Hamas's tunnels into Israel was complete, "the military will prepare for continuing action according to our security needs and only according to our security needs".

Israel Airstrikes Against Gaza Destroy Mosques, Government Buildings 2 Aug 2014 Israeli airstrikes destroyed mosques, residential and government buildings, and part of Gaza's Islamic University Saturday as ground forces continued to search for a missing infantry officer who was believed captured by militants [although he wasn't. It's a lie].

Video: After Islamic University, Israel Destroys Gaza's Largest Mosque 2 Aug 2014 After missiles hit the Islamic University on Friday night, the Al Shefayee mosque, Gaza's largest, was reduced to a rubble when Israeli F-16s repeatedly bombarded the building. However, no casualty was reported as the mosque was unoccupied at that time. The attack came in the wake of Israeli military's allegations that Hamas was using the mosque to build tunnels and to store ammunitions - a charge denied by the angry Gazans. They claim the mosque had religious as well as educational significance and was attended by almost a thousand people everyday.

UN Official Breaks Down and Sobs Uncontrollably Over Israeli Shelling of Gaza School 31 July 2014 A United Nations official has broken down live on air as he talked about a deadly attack on a school in Gaza. According to Gaza's Ministry of Health, at least 17 people were killed and 90 wounded in the shelling of the Jabalia Elementary Girls School early on Wednesday morning. (Video)

BP files appeal of settlement to U.S. Supreme Court [And, we all know how the five Koch suckers will vote on this one.] 2 Aug 2014 Late Friday night, BP filed its formal petition to the U.S. Supreme Court claiming that lower courts in New Orleans erroneously approved a multi-billion-d-llar settlement that is paying claimants that were not hurt by the company's 2010 oil spill. The writ of certiorari petition, which asks the Supreme Court to take up the case, has been expected since May, when the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected BP's attempts to undo the massive damage settlement it agreed to and helped craft in 2012. In fact, BP already asked the high court to keep in place a stay on business claims p-yments that it is challenging and the Supreme Court denied that application in June.

Toxins leave 500,000 in northwest Ohio without drinking water 2 Aug 2014 Dangerously high levels of toxins from algae on Lake Erie left 500,000 people in Toledo, Ohio, without safe drinking water on Saturday and sent many driving to other states in search of bottled water. Ohio Governor John Kasich declared a state of emergency for the region, freeing up resources for the Ohio National Guard and state workers to truck safe water to people who need it. Officials could not say when Toledo's water service can be declared safe, and boiling the water will not destroy the toxic microcystins.

NYPD Chokehold Death Ruled a Homicide 1 Aug 2014 The death of a Staten Island man who was put into an apparent choke hold by the New York Police Department was ruled a homicide today by the city's medical examiner. The incident provoked outrage last month after a witness filmed New York Police Department cops placing Eric Garner in what appeared to be a chokehold while arresting Garner for selling cigarettes illegally. After his death, officers told supervisors that they did not think excess force was used and initially blamed Garner's death on a heart attack before the film went viral.
