9/11 judge and prosecutors should step down over 'destroyed evidence', defense demands | 11 May 2016 | An explosive allegation about destroyed evidence threatens to unravel the already shaky military tribunal for the alleged architect of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Attorneys for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed are calling on the judge and the entire prosecution team in Mohammed's military commission at Guantánamo Bay to step down from the long-running case over what a member of the defense team called "at least the appearance of collusion" that led to the government apparently secretly destroying information relevant to the premier post-9/11 tribunal. The defense team further argues that the destruction of evidence ought to spell the end of Mohammed's military trial entirely, a development that would leave the Obama administration and its successor to come up with an entirely new plan for what to do with the top terror suspect in US custody.

Saudi government part of support network for '9/11 hijackers', commission member says --'Our report should never have been read as an exoneration of Saudi Arabia.' | 12 May 2016 | A former Republican member of the 9/11 commission, breaking dramatically with the commission's leaders, said Wednesday he believes there was clear evidence that Saudi government employees were part of a support network for the '9/11 hijackers' [What about the explosives that were planted inside WTC 1, 2, and 7, and the Pentagon?] and that the Obama administration should move quickly to declassify a long-secret congressional report ['the 28 pages'] on Saudi ties to the 2001 terrorist attack. The comments by John F Lehman, an investment banker in New York who was Navy secretary in the Reagan administration, signal the first serious public split among the 10 commissioners since they issued a 2004 final report that was largely read as an exoneration of Saudi Arabia, which was home to 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11.

American tanks in Putin's backyard: US and British soldiers join the Georgian army on two weeks of military drills - angering Russia --Washington dispatching an entire mechanised company including eight Bradley infantry fighting vehicles and eight M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks | 11 May 2016 | The Georgian army has begun two weeks of military exercises with the United States and Britain - despite Russia's anger as American tanks rolled into its backyard. Hundreds of soldiers gathered at the military base of Vaziani - once used by Russia, just outside the capital Tbilisi - for the opening ceremony of the exercise, dubbed 'Noble Partner 2016'. As the sky filled with paratroopers while some 650 American, 150 British and 500 Georgian soldiers watched on in front of a fleet of tanks, Moscow's anger was almost palpable.

U.S. activates Romanian missile defense site, angering Russia | 12 May 2016 | The United States switched on an $800 million missile shield in Romania on Thursday that it sees as vital to defend itself and Europe from so-called rogue states criticism for wasting 800 million but the Kremlin says is aimed at blunting its own nuclear arsenal. To the music of military bands at the remote Deveselu air base, senior U.S. and NATO officials declared operational the ballistic missile defense site, which is capable of shooting down rockets from countries such as Iran that Washington says could one day reach major European cities.

Suicide attacks at factory north of Baghdad kill 11 - police sources | 15 May 2016 | Bomb attacks against a state-run cooking gas factory in Baghdad's northern outskirts on Sunday killed at least 11 people, including policemen, and wounded 21 others, police sources said. A suicide car bomb went off at the entrance of the facility in Taji at around 0600 local time (2300 EDT), allowing another vehicle carrying at least six attackers with explosive vests to enter the facility where they clashed with security forces, the sources said. A spokesman for Baghdad Operations Command said three of the facility's gas storages were set alight amid the violence before security forces were able to bring the situation under control.

US naval commander demoted after Iran's capture of sailors | 12 May 2016 | The US Navy has fired the commander of the 10 US sailors who in January entered Iranian territorial waters and were briefly detained. In a statement, the US Navy said it had lost confidence in Eric Rasch, who was in charge of a riverine squadron at the time of the incident in the Gulf. A Navy official said Mr Rasch had been re-assigned, the Associated Press says...On Thursday, the US Navy official said that Mr Rasch had failed to provide effective leadership, leading to a lack of oversight, complacency and failure to maintain standards in his unit.

False flag busted? 'A perfect terror exercise:' Manchester United stadium 'bomb' identified as forgotten training device --Old Trafford evacuated after discovery of what turns out to be device left behind by company conducting training exercise | 16 May 2016 | A fake bomb planted by a security company as part of a training exercise at Old Trafford caused the cancellation of Manchester United's final Premier League game of the season when the firm forgot to take it away. The security blunder led to United's home stadium being evacuated 20 minutes before kick-off against Bournemouth after an "incredibly lifelike explosive device" was found at the ground. Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on the dummy device, which was discovered in the toilets within the north-west quadrant, between the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End.

Five men dubbed the 'tinnie terrorists' to be extradited from Queensland to Victoria | 16 May 2016 | Counter terrorism police have gained approval to have five terror suspects extradited to Melbourne to appear in court this Thursday. The five men who allegedly planned to get to Indonesia by boat so they could join ISIL in Syria faced court in Cairns today. The men, who are all from Melbourne and aged between 21 and 31, have each been charged with one count of making preparations for incursions into foreign countries to engage in hostile activities...The men were charged after the AFP [Australian Federal Police] last Thursday successfully applied to a Cairns magistrate for them to be held in detention for an extended period under "specified time" provisions of the Crimes Act.

Last month, elite police forces staged a simulated terror attack at the Palais des Festivals, the venue for the main screenings. Meanwhile, air and sea exclusion zones have also been declared, as well as a ban on drones, and Mayor David Lisnard has said random searches will be conducted in the streets of Cannes.

Texas fertilizer plant blast that killed 15 was criminal act: ATF |11 May 2016 | A blast that killed 15 people three years ago triggered by a fire at a Texas fertilizer plant was a criminal act, U.S. agents said on Wednesday after conducting extensive tests that eliminated accidental and natural causes. "The only hypothesis that could not be eliminated...and was confirmed by extensive testing...is incendiary," Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigator Rob Elder, special agent in charge for the Houston field office. He spoke at a news conference on the blast that ripped through the city of West, about 75 miles (120 km) south of Dallas, in 2013.

Demonstrators Demand Shut Down of Florida Nuclear Plant After Radiation Leaks | 14 May 2016 | Dozens of protesters demonstrated outside of a Florida Power & Light facility concerning leaks at the nuclear power plant at Turkey Point. It took place Saturday morning at 4200 W. Flagler Street and comes after the company announced that customers will shell out an estimated 50 million this year alone for the cleanup of hypersaline water coming from the plant. Environmental advocates are worried that the leaking wastewater containing radioactive isotopes is a threat to drinking water from the Biscayne aquifer. They want the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station shut down.

Shell oil line spills 88,200 gallons into the Gulf of Mexico | 13 May 2016 | About 88,200 gallons of oil have leaked from a Shell flow line into the Gulf of Mexico about 90 miles off the coast of Louisiana, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Chief Petty Officer Bobby Nash said the leak has been secured and cleanup crews will be dispatched. The leak was reported Thursday. Shell spokeswoman Kimberly Windon, in a statement late Thursday, said a helicopter saw an oil sheen near the Glider subsea tieback system at Shell's Brutus platform shortly before 8 a.m.

Royal Canadian Police Summoned on Wi-Fi Threat | 11 May 2016 | The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, famed worldwide as "rescuers" and titans of justice, has been summoned by Capt. Jerry Flynn (ret.) to rescue Canada from radiation pollution. RCMP, also known as "the Force" and the "Mounties," is a federal national police force that works on a contract basis with three territories, eight provinces, 190 municipalities, 184 aboriginal communities and three international airports. Flynn this week called on the Public Health Agency of Canada to direct RCMP "to conduct a criminal investigation into Canada's radio frequency and extremely low frequency scientific community beginning with Health Canada's radiation protection bureau." He spent 22 years in electronic warfare and signals intelligence for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Top health expert calls for Rio Olympics to be postponed, cancelled or moved because Zika could start a 'full-blown global health disaster' | 12 May 2016 | A public health expert is calling for the Rio Olympics to be cancelled, postponed or moved because of the Zika virus. University of Ottawa Professor Amir Attaran says hosting the games in 'the heart of the outbreak' will cause a 'full-blown global health disaster'. In a new article for the Harvard Public Health Review, Attaran says that Zika has been vastly underestimated by Brazilian health officials and that if the games were to go on, the disease would easily spread around the world, wreaking havoc on poorer nations not equipped to fight the still-mysterious virus.

Chaos at NV Democratic Convention; State Party Chair Flees Building as Sanders Supporters Demand Recount | 15 May 2016 | (Las Vegas) This situation escalated out of control when Roberta Lange, Chairwoman of the Nevada State Democratic Party and member of the national DNC Executive Committee subjectively called the results of a voice vote, adjourned the meeting using a gavel, and left. According to a Democratic Party spokesman, the national party or its Chair, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, "did not have a part in this." [LOL!] Nevada's Democratic caucus erupted into chaos Saturday night. Bernie Sanders supporters demanded 64 rejected pro-Sanders delegates listed in a "minority report" prepared by their campaign be allowed to participate in selecting delegates for the national convention. DNC leaders refused to reconsider their decision not to allow this, adjourned, and fled the building amid a chorus of boos; leaving hotel security and local police officers to handle the angry Sanders supporters.

Democratic Convention Hosted by Republican Donors, Anti-Obamacare Lobbyists | 11 May 2016 | The 2016 convention in Philadelphia will be officially hosted by lobbyists and corporate executives, a number of whom are actively working to undermine progressive policies achieved by President Barack Obama, including health care reform and net neutrality. Some of the members of the 2016 Democratic National Convention Host Committee, whose job is to organize the logistics and events for the convention, are hardly even Democratic Party stalwarts, given that many have donated and raised thousands of dollars for Republican presidential and congressional candidates this cycle. The composition of the 15-member Host Committee may appear out of sync with the rhetoric of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, but the reality is that the party, in the form of the Democratic National Committee, has moved decisively to embrace the lobbying industry.

Trump: Bezos using 'Washington Post' to protect Amazon monopoly | 13 May 2016 | Soon-to-be Republican nominee for president, Donald Trump, says Jeff Bezos, the Amazon CEO [and job outsourcer] who owns The Washington Post, is using the paper to attack him and the other political enemies who would force the massive online retailer to pay more in taxes. Donald Trump told Sean Hannity in an interview Thursday that Bezos is using the Post "like a toy" and "for power so that the politicians in Washington don't tax Amazon like they should be taxed." [*Exactly.*] In his effort to keep Trump out of the White House and protect his monopoly, the Amazon founder has assigned more than 20 Washington Post reporters to look at every aspect of his life, Trump said.

Donald Trump and Paul Ryan Move Toward Ending Standoff and Forging Unity | 12 May 2016 | Donald J. Trump and House Speaker [corporatist fraud] Paul D. Ryan appeared to take half a step back from their political standoff on Thursday, as Mr. Trump toured Washington for a swirl of meetings with Republican lawmakers concerned about the direction of his presidential campaign. In public, Mr. Ryan praised Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, as "warm and genuine," and declared that a process of reconciliation was underway. Behind closed doors, Mr. Trump pulled back his threat to remove Mr. Ryan as the chairman of the Republican nominating convention, and offered to help elect G.O.P. candidates running for the House and the Senate...Mr. Ryan and Mr. Trump met at the Republican National Committee for 45 minutes on Thursday morning, with Reince Priebus, the committee’s chairman, as their chaperone.

McConnell praises 'constructive' meeting with Trump | 12 May 2016 | Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) praised an hour-long meeting with Donald Trump Thursday as "constructive." McConnell and other members of his leadership team met with the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee for about an hour at the National Republican Senatorial Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., under a heavy police presence. McConnell offered few details, but said steps were taken toward unifying the GOP. "We had a very good, constructive meeting," he told reporters.

Donald Trump Is Considering Newt Gingrich for Vice Presidential Role | 11 May 2016 | Donald Trump has discussed in recent days the possibility of selecting former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as his running mate, according to people familiar with the talks. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has been asking confidants for input on Gingrich as a potential pick, including during conversations Wednesday at Trump Tower in New York, according to a person familiar with the discussions. Trump told the Associated Press that he has narrowed his running-mate list to "five or six" candidates, and has named campaign manager Corey Lewandowski to head up the vetting process "with a group" of staffers.

Republicans win Obamacare legal challenge, add to insurer concerns | 12 May 2016 | A U.S. judge on Thursday handed a victory to congressional Republicans who challenged President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, ruling that his administration overstepped its constitutional powers relating to government spending. U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer, based in Washington, ruled that the administration cannot spend billions of dollars in federal funds to provide subsidies under the law known as Obamacare to private insurers without the approval of Congress. At issue in the case, brought by the Republican-led House of Representatives, are reimbursements to insurance companies to compensate them for reductions that the law requires them to make to customers' out-of-pocket medical payments.

States vow to defy Obama directive on transgender bathrooms | 14 May 2016 | Politicians in Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere vowed defiance after the Obama administration told public schools across the U.S. on Friday to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity...The directive from the U.S. Justice and Education Departments represents an escalation in the fast-moving dispute over what is becoming the civil rights issue of the day. One by one, conservative political leaders thundered against it and President Barack Obama.

U.S. Directs Public Schools to Allow Transgender Access to Restrooms | 12 May 2016 | The Obama administration is planning to issue a sweeping directive telling every public school district in the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity. A letter to school districts will go out Friday, adding to a highly charged debate over transgender rights in the middle of the administration's legal fight with North Carolina over the issue. The declaration - signed by Justice and Education department officials - will describe what schools should do to ensure that none of their students are discriminated against. It does not have the force of law, but it contains an implicit threat: Schools that do not abide by the Obama administration's interpretation of the law could face lawsuits or a loss of federal aid. [And yet: Obama has *no problem* w. top US ally -- the Sharia sociopaths of Saudi Arabia -- who execute gays.]

There are now more homeless kids and parents in D.C. than homeless single adults | 11 May 2016 | The number of homeless families in the District has soared by more than 30 percent compared with a year ago, according to a federal estimate released Wednesday. For the first time since the annual census began in 2001, homeless children and their parents in the District outnumbered homeless single adults, a population beset by mental illness and disabilities that historically has loomed as the larger and more intractable problem in cities nationwide. On one day in late January, officials counted 4,667 homeless children and their parents, compared with 3,683 single adults.

Ex-S.C. policeman indicted on federal charges in shooting of unarmed black man | 11 May 2016 | A white former police officer has been indicted in U.S. court on a civil rights violation and a charge of lying to investigators after he fatally shot a black man following a traffic stop in South Carolina last year, court records unsealed Wednesday show. Michael Slager shot Walter Scott without legal justification in April 2015, a federal grand jury found, depriving the motorist of his right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a law enforcement officer. The grand jury also charged Slager with discharging a gun during a violent crime and obstructing justice by intentionally misleading state investigators probing the shooting.
