Church Group Helps Wilbraham Family Rebuild
April 9th, 2013
WILBRAHAM, Mass. (WGGB) — It’s been nearly two years since a tornado ripped through a Wilbraham family’s home.
But thanks to a church group based in Maine, the O’Grady family is seeing light at the end of the tornado tunnel.
Volunteers from the United Methodist Church in Maine are helping a Wilbraham family get back on their feet.
Melissa and Matt O’Grady along with their two children have been living with Melissa’s mom since that June 1, 2011 tornado.
“It’s been a rough two years, people see me around, this is my uniform, when I’m not working I’m here,” says Matthew O’Grady.
Matt and Melissa are thankful that volunteers are helping them rebuild.
“They’ve been a blessing. It’s really the first glimmer of hope I’ve had since it’s happened,” says Melissa.
From putting in foam insulation to replacing the exterior clapboards, the group is giving this Wilbraham family hope.
“They’ve accomplished in a couple of days what took me months and months to accomplish so it’s a huge help,” says Matthew O’Grady.
The church group is led by Pastor Roy Richardson.
“Most of us are all volunteers. We have one or two professionals who really know what they’re doing, and the rest of us have learned over the years how to do it,” says Pastor Richardson.
The church group has done work all over the country including helping Louisiana residents after Hurricane Katrina.
The local United Methodist Church has offered them space in which to sleep and cook their meals.
There’s a lot of work still to be done on this house and this group says they will stay here for another two weeks to get it all completed
