The Racial Injustice of Rochelle, Georgia

UNACCEPTABLE: In the city of Rochelle, Georgia, railroad tracks serve as the dividing line between the African-American and white communities. While the city government has updated and repaired critical utilities in white neighborhoods, on the black side of the tracks, it’s a different story. http://ow.ly/nVu2P For decades, the rusted and crumbling sewer pipes north of the city’s railroad tracks have regurgitated fecal matter, toilet paper and other noxious debris into the homes and yards of Rochelle’s African-American residents.

Three months ago, Earthjustice attorneys stood up to the bully tactics of Rochelle’s mayor and chief of police and filed an official demand that the city immediately correct its sewer discrimination or be slammed with a federal Clean Water Act lawsuit. 60 days passed, and the city government still hadn't resolved the problem.

Now, a group of African-American citizens from Rochelle is finally able to fight back against this injustice. The residents are suing the city government of Rochelle for discharging the city’s raw sewage onto their properties.
