That was the luckiest day of my life.

A little over three years ago, a large black lab was found running around the college where I work. Animal control told me that if he wasn't claimed in seven days, he would be euthanized since he was a large black dog.

Having two large dogs at home already along with 5 cats, I was hesitant to add another. But when I heard that he might be euthanized, I brought him home. That was the luckiest day of my life.

We kept him separated from the other dogs at first so that we could introduce them slowly. On the third day we had him, I came home at midnight to find my husband outside with Roscoe. He had woken Jim up, and not knowing his cues yet, Jim took him out. We happened to walk together to the side of my house where the basement windows were (I never go to that side of the house at night). I looked in the window and realized that our basement was on fire.
