GOP Gov. Seeks Repeal of mid-1800s Child Labor Laws, Wanted 12-Year-Olds to Toil --[Maine Governor's desire harkens back to the days of Charles Dickens and the 'Hungry Forties' in Victorian England] 02 Dec 2013 Gov. Paul LePage's goal of making it easier for minors to work will continue in January when the Department of Labor proposes streamlining the work permit process despite previous failed attempts to do so. Child labor in Maine has been regulated by state government since the mid-1800s and a key component of those regulations requires school superintendents to issue work permits for school-age children offered a job. Now the Department of Labor has proposed being the first contact for work permits during the summer months. The initiative falls short of LePage's stated desire to lower the legal working age to 12, but reprises previous unsuccessful attempts to make it easier for Mainers younger than 16 to earn a p*ycheck.

Texas drivers get asked for saliva, blood by federal contractors at police roadblock 19 Nov 2013 Some drivers along a busy Fort Worth street on Friday were stopped at police roadblock and directed into a parking lot, where they were asked by federal contractors for samples of their breath, saliva and even blood. It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers. NBC DFW confirmed that the survey was done by a government contractor, the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, which is based in Calverton, Md.

Britain targets Guardian newspaper over intelligence leaks related to Edward Snowden 30 Nov 2013 Living in self-imposed exile in Russia, former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden may be safely out of reach from western powers. But dismayed by the continued airing of transatlantic intelligence, British authorities are taking full aim at a messenger shedding light on his secret files here -- the Guardian newspaper. Although Britain is famously home to a fierce pack of media outlets -- including the tabloid hounds of old Fleet Street -- it also has no enshrined constitutional right to free speech.

Dutch intelligence agency hacks internet forums 01 Dec 2013 The Dutch intelligence service, AIVD, had hacked internet web forums to collect the data of all users. The majority of these people are unknown to the intelligence services and are not specified as targets when the hacking and data collection process starts. A secret document of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden shows that the AIVD use a technology called Computer Network Exploitation, CNE, to hack the web forums and collect the data.

Police Officer Guarding Polio Team Shot Dead 01 Dec 2013 Police in northwest Pakistan say gunmen have attacked police officers who were guarding a team of polio vaccination workers, killing one of the officers and wounding another. Officials say the police were attacked Saturday in Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Militants frequently attack polio workers in Pakistan, accusing them of being Western spies or part of a plot to sterilize Muslims. [*Exactly.*]

Pakistan opposition urges blockade of NATO supplies 01 Dec 2013 Pakistan's main opposition group has called on the government to officially block the supply routes for foreign forces in Afghanistan, citing US assassination drone attacks. Syed Munawar Hassan, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami opposition group, said in Lahore on Saturday that arms and ammunition headed into Afghanistan via Pakistan for the US-led forces are being used in attacks in tribal areas and cities bordering Afghanistan. The Jamaat-e-Islami chief called it the best time to pressure Washington into putting an end to its deadly aerial attacks.

Libya's army tells militias, protesters to free up oil ports 01 Dec 2013 Libya's army told former militia fighters and protesters to end their occupations of oilfields and ports and allow crude exports to restart, saying the OPEC country risked sliding into lawlessness. Prime Minister Ali Zeidan has so far failed to negotiate an end to a series of sit-ins and strikes by security guards, civil servants, militiamen and other groups calling for everything from security and autonomy to a greater share of oil wealth. Two years after the NATO[CIA]-led uprising invasion ousted Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's new military has struggled to control militias who helped topple Gaddafi and also continue to fight over territory and political feuds. [Hopefully, the resistors and freedom fighters keep the oil ports *shut down.* The signal must be sent to USociopaths that when you overthrow a foreign government at the behest of corpora-terrorists -- the coup will not stand. --LRP]

Terrorism threat against US increasing: Intel chairs 02 Dec 2013 The leaders of congressional intelligence panels say terrorism threat against the United States is increasing and that the intelligence community has less ability to counter "a growing number of threats." "The threat level has never been more diverse than it is today," Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. Rogers and Senator Dianne Feinstein, the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, appeared on the show together to discuss terrorism threats on the same day that al-Qaeda's [al-CIAduh's] US spokesperson called for attacks on American interests around the world.

US airlines give China flight plans for new defence zone 01 Dec 2013 US airlines United, American and Delta, have notified Chinese authorities of flight plans when traveling through an air defence zone Beijing has declared over the East China Sea, following US government advice. The United States said on Friday it expected US carriers to operate in line with so-called notices to airmen issued by foreign countries. A spokesman for Delta Airlines said it had been complying with the Chinese requests for flight plans for the past week.

Judge: Detroit can cut employee pensions 03 Dec 2013 U.S. B*nkr*ptcy Judge Steven Rhodes ruled Tuesday that pensions legally can be cut in Detroit's b*nkr*ptcy. Rhodes emphasized that he won't necessarily allow pension cuts to be approved in the city's final reorganization plan, called a "plan of adjustment." [Here's a better 'plan of adjustment.' Kenai brown bears have 33 percent chance of being wiped out in 25 years, but hunters want to kill more 02 Dec 2013 This year on the Kenai Peninsula, hunters sociopaths killed a record 45 brown bears -- five times the average -- under dramatically liberalized state hunting rules, and federal wildlife managers became so concerned they took the unprecedented step of temporarily shutting down the sport hunt on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Now federal authorities are considering limits on the refuge for next year's Kenai brown bear hunting season. At the current [killing] rate, the entire Kenai brown bear population has a 33 percent chance of being wiped out in 25 years, said John Morton, supervisory biologist for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. In just a few years the number would drop below 500, which is considered "evolutionary not viable," Morton said. Quick action! Tell the US to order an end to the hunting of Kenai brown bears! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is taking public comment on its Kenai Peninsula brown bear conservation measures until Dec. 13. Comments can be emailed to kenai@fws.gov, faxed to 907-262-3599, or mailed to Refuge Manager, P.O. Box 2139, Soldotna, AK 99669.
