FORD EXPLORER: Good Samaritans step in after Taylors Falls crash

Good Samaritans step in after Taylors Falls crash

TAYLORS FALLS, Minn. -- Two Minneapolis women suffered serious injuries after being run over by a sport-utility vehicle at a popular restaurant in Taylors Falls on Saturday.
The accident happened just after 2 p.m. at The Drive In Restaurant at 572 Bench Street. According to the Chisago County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle backed into a group of people sitting at a picnic table, pinning Kristen Christensen, 37, and Lauren Damman, 53, under the vehicle. One of the victims was also submerged underwater in a stream that runs through the area.
The driver of the Ford Explorer has been identified as Bonnie Rushfeldt, 67, from Dresser, Wisconsin.
Carly Peterson, who works at The Drive In and witnessed the aftermath of the crash, said people started yelling at the woman to stop as she was backing up toward the picnic table.
"The panic set in and I think instead of hitting the brakes she accidentally hit the gas pedal and right down the hill she went," Peterson said.
Owner Wade Vitalis said he was amazed at how many people rushed to help the women, saying, "Anybody sitting at a picnic table... they didn't run away from it. They ran to help, which was the amazing part."
According to Vitalis, up to 20 people helped lift the Ford Explorer to pull one of the victims out of the way. Another woman was still pinned underneath, submerged in a stream.
"So we cut off a length of the hose and brought it down to try and help the woman breathe while she was underwater... it wasn't coordinated but everybody worked together," Vitalis said.
Another man hooked the front of his Jeep up to the SUV and backed up as everybody pushed the vehicle up a slope.
"Then we got the other woman out. She wasn't breathing. She was blue. And so then there was a gentleman there in a blue shirt who started mouth-to-mouth and CPR right away," Vitalis said.
Vitalis estimates the woman was underwater for about five minutes. He said first responders were able to resuscitate her.
"Because of all these people jumping into action... it really touched my heart to see people do that and there's a lot more good in the world and that was just an example of people wanting to do something," he said.
Both women were airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with serious injuries. They are listed as critical condition as of July 3.
The accident remains under investigation by the Chisago County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Death trap truck?

I have a 2012 Ford F-150.Today makes 2 days in a row the truck has tried to kill my family.Lastnight on the way home from picking the kids up.I was slowing down at a red light going maybe 20 mph.All the sudden the motor then raced up to 2,500 rpm's and I barely got it stopped.Today after my sons basketball game and lunch.I had just stopped at a red light in the middle of town. The motor out of no where raced to 4,000 rpms and the tires were smoking. The truck was going sideways and trying to push its way into on coming traffic.I shut off the key and then restarted it.The motor raced to 4,000 rpm again so I **** it off. After the 3rd start up the truck drove fine.So here I am after several previous attempts to get other things on my truck fixed at the local dealers.I have zero confidence in Ford to help.My wife and kids are freaked out and want me to get rid of the truck asap before it killls someone.Whats your thoughts on this?

2010 F150 4.6L WOT with foot off the pedal

I got in a work truck yesterday, sat down, put my seat belt on and started the truck. Just as I did that another employee drove by and waved, all I could do was nod back at him because my hand was still starting the truck. This took my attention away for a split second, then as I put the truck in gear, my foot still on the brake, I noticed that the tachometer was pegged and the engine was racing. I instinctively pushed harder on the brake pedal, then looked down to be sure that I was pushing on the brake pedal and I was. Right then then rear of the truck started shaking violently and as fast as I could I turned the key off and put it back in park. This all happened in about 1 second, maybe 2.

The shaking was caused by the sheared off driveshaft. And it was sheared off because the center section of the rear differential had broken the spot welds that hold it and place and rotated on the axel housings. It is now pointing upward towards the bed of the
truck
.

Anybody else ever have a drive by wire truck run the engine at wide open throttle with no input from the pedal?

**I'll try to get the pics posted soon

UPDATE: No charges in runaway SUV case
POSTED 6:46 PM, JULY 10, 2014

(with 2:20 min video segment)  (Ford SUV)
--------------
(excerpts):

Witnesses told police that a car wash employee went to move the SUV
forward, when the vehicle suddenly accelerated.

The employee was able to miss two parked cars before trying to slam on
the brakes to no success.

After crossing Dupuy Avenue, the SUV hit the curb, knocking the driver
out of the seat and onto the ground.

Sheriff Todd Wilson said the SUV never slowed down and continued
almost the length of a football field before slamming into the large green
power box on the north side of the courthouse.

The employee was slightly injured and required medical attention at the
hospital.

Bob Schrum, the owner of Flagstop Car Wash, said his employees are
provided a list of cars, trucks and SUVs that have been proven prone to
unintentional acceleration. In fact, he said the instances have been well
documented by the National Car Wash Association.

Schrum said about a month ago that all 120 of his employees took part in a
safety seminar provided by his insurance company, which touched on
sudden unintentional acceleration.
