Boston to Cape Cod Rail service starts Memorial Weekend

 

After more than a quarter-century Memorial Day Weekend will see the return of Boston to Cape Cod rail service according to an announcement from the Steamship Authority.

 

The new Cape Cod Flyer will have a relaxing ride and avoid the Friday night tie-up at the bridges.

The new Cape Flyer train, an extension of the MBTA, will make a stop at Buzzards Bay, where Martha's Vineyard-bound passengers can board a connecting bus to Woods Hole steamships.

 

Ends in Hyannis after a two-hour ride

The final stop is the downtown Hyannis Transportation Center where passengers can use local buses.

Nantucket-bound passengers can walk a couple blocks to catch the Steamship or Hy-Line boats to the Islands.

According to the Cape Cod Flyer website, travel time from South Station to Hyannis will be about two hours.

The schedule and fares will be posted soon for weekend service through Labor Day.

The site also says, "Visitors can expect a train leaving South Station on Friday nights and round-trip trains leaving Saturday and Sunday mornings and returning at the end of each day."
