Toyota Prius Complaints

A few recent Toyota Prius complaints posted on the Center for Auto Safety ----

    • Problem Description:
Outright break failure while driving but avoided collision. Took to dealer and they indicated the Prius 2010 brake booster had leaked nitrogen into the master cylinder part of the brake assembly 'contaminating' it and Toyota recommended replacing the entire assembly (booster and master cylinder) be replace ($1.740 for booster and $2.500 for master cyl). Outside of warranty. Toyota told dealer they would not assist with repairing the defect even though the leak would have been over a period of time to affect the brake booster functionality. I have seen literally thousands of Prius brake failures compiled and consider this issue to be an enormous liability for Toyota that they must address with a recall and a periodic replacement. Always bought Honda but stretched $$s to get Prius 2010 assuming there was a good degree of integrity from this company. This vehicles unannounced brake failure from a defect should 'ground' these vehicles until addressed.

    • Problem Description:
Add me to the list of Prius owners who have experienced one, the other, or BOTH headlights flickering and going OUT intermittently while driving. Prior to my purchase of this used car, the dealer, at 34,000 miles, serviced the car for the same issue -- and replaced the bulb. Six months after I purchased the car, I replaced both bulbs, and now they are both flickering and going dark again. I am pulled over by the police every other night -- and I can show them that the headlights DO work if I turn them off and on again. Toyota says it is not their problem -- but it isn't the bulbs, it has to be the wiring which they take no responsibility for. I can't afford to keep replacing these expensive bulbs, and know that even new bulbs wont prevent my car from driving at 65 mph on the highway without headlights.

    • Problem Description:
2009 Prius exhibits symptoms consistent with collapse of fuel tank bladder followed by inability to refill the tank, particularly during cold weather. Attempts to even trickle in a small amount (less than 1 pint) result in gas spurting back out the filler even when tank is nearly empty. Local Toyota Service personnel deny ever hearing of any problem with the fuel tank and suggest changing the carbon cannister (at a cost exceeding $600) with no assurance that this will fix the problem.

  • Problem Description

    • Problem Description:
I am an excellent driver. I purchased this Prius in the summer of 2011. We (my wife and young daughter) were proceeding on Juanita Drive N.E. in Kirkland, WA. My wife and I agree that our speed was approximately 30-33 mph and that there were approximately 3+ car lengths between us and the vehicle in front of us. The weather was dry and sunny. Suddenly, a vehicle three vehicles ahead of us stopped to make a left turn, and the two vehicles behind it were able to stop. I immediately applied my brakes to the floor as soon as I observed the stopped vehicle ahead. I felt no response - no gripping of the brakes or gripping of the wheels to the road, no squealing, no skidding, no sense of the brakes slowing the vehicle in the three seconds I applied them. Due to vehicles in the opposing lane, a narrow road and no shoulder (a ditch with telephone poles on the right), I was forced to design the least harmful impact - my front right corner to the rear left corner of the vehicle in front. The impact tore open the right front of the vehicle, shattering the windshield next to my wife and causing her legs to fly up and strike the dashboard, injuring her legs in several places. Her airbag did not deploy. My 7-year-old was in her car seat in the back seat. The larger split back was behind her. The back became unhinged at impact and flipped forward, forcing my daughter's upper body forward. She sustained minor facial injuries. While it is possible that the airbag non-deployment was appropriate (I am not certain of this), there is no question that the braking was soft, squishy, non-existent, and the back seat should not have become unhinged.

    • Problem Description:
The headlights have been going out randomly for the last few months but only one at a time. This evening while driving home from a late meeting, both headlights went out while driving at 55mph. I pulled off the highway and tried turning the car off and on again. Headlights went on when I turned the car back on, so I resumed driving only to have the lights go out again! This time I flicked on the high beams and the lights came on. I stopped to grab a bite to eat figuring I could do the high beam trick again. When I started the car, the lights when on and high beams turned on when I engaged the lever. WHILE driving home, less than 2 miles from where I started the car, headlights went out and the high beams did not work either when I attempted to turn them on. I pulled over to turn the car off and on again BUT with no luck this time. Very slowly drove the last mile home on the less traveled road with my flashers on...THIS SITUATION IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS.

On 01/14/13, both headlights went out while driving in town at night. I was at a stop sign and the car next to me informed me that I needed to turn my lights on. I turned the headlight switch off, then on again they came back on. Previously, I had been told that I had one light out, however when I would turn them off, then on again they would both work ~ at least for a bit. I had previously complained in 12/2008, to no avail. When I contacted Toyota Corporation ~ they told me that there was nothing that they could do. In 2008 it was out of warranty and currently it is out of warranty. Older mileage cars DO have problems with their headlights!

    • Problem Description:
I am the original owner of a Toyota Prius 2007. I live on Cape Cod, I was driving alone, am 47 years old, and have excellent driving record. I was driving down the highway preparing to get into right lane to exit, I exited left onto a busy road. I drove a couple hundred feet, straight, and my triangle warning light came on and the PS light. I immediately realized that my steering wheel froze. Looking to the side of the road to try to pull over, as not to cause an accident, I used all of my might to turn the wheel a couple inches to get off to a clearing. There happened to be a policeman acroos the street. I ran over to ask him if I could park there while I went to get help, that I just lost my steering. He said fine. I called for help. As I waited I tried to start the car again. It started up and was driving so I left, thinking maybe I could make it home. Couple hundred feet later it froze again accompanied by violent shaking. Called for help again. I got the car to the Toyota dealership. Day one, they told me the car isn't ready that they weren't sure what was wrong with it. Day 2, after many calls, I get a diagnosis. They said that the Power Steering ECU failed. I asked if they had ever seen this before, they said no. I later found online many upset people that this has happened to. They said the total would be roughly $1000.00(I have the printed work order) but because they "felt bad for me" being in such a dangerous situation, that they would be willing to cut some costs, and the Toyota mechanic would work for $80 an hour instead of $110.00 an hour. I had never heard of a mechanic giving up part of his pay at a Toyota dealership. I have 55,000 miles on the car so they said I missed the 36,000 warranty. I can't imagine what would have happened if I were on a 4 lane highway heading into Boston or on a windy road. I believe that this needs to be recalled, who is to say that the next ECU they put in is not going to do the same thing, seeing I have already had 6 other recalls on the car. I bought this car to better the environment, now that I have had a scare like this I am afraid to drive it, it has lost value, and Toyota doesn't seem to care about safety or the lives of people.

Continual intermittent headlamp failure(s) over the last several years that is corrected by turning the lights off and back on. One or both headlamps go out. This is VERY dangerous when driving at night. Have had grandchildren in the car when it's happened. Hae resorted to only driving the vehicle during daylight hours, because multiple bulb replacement(s) hasn't resolved the problem. Over 196 consumer complaints filed regarding this safety concern with the NHTSA with no result. Called the NHTSA and asked how many complaints does it take to get something done. Was told that Toyota drives a same model year around and if they can't duplicate the problem, then it is no longer investigated. Toyota recalled 2006 - 2009 models for this issue. They need to go back and recall 2005 for the SAME THING.

Toyota has a major flaw in their HID headlamp systems in their Prius models. The headlamps will extinguish unexpectedly while driving causing imminent danger to both driver as well as other vehicles near the vehicle. I have contacted Toyota and they are denying any responsibility for the problem, claiming that the problem is fixable by replacing the lamp, which is simply not true. I had the HID headlamps serviced and they are still going out. Toyota needs to be held responsible for this problem, it is obviously either a bad design or material flaws causing the problem.

    • Problem Description:
People ask me if we like our 2006 Prius. I say we love it. They ask if we have had any problems with the battery. I say no. They ask if we have had any problems with it. I say none EXCEPT: 1. It is not raccoon proof. It is so low to the ground, when I hit a raccoon on the highway it caused over $2000 + in damage. Even knocked the a/c unit off its mount on the frame under the hood. 2. MORE RELEVANT We have had a constant problem with headlights going out from the beginning, one light after another left and right has gone out (usually off and on) from the first year we bought it. The right light has been going off again the last 8 months. We have not taken it in to get fixed again because it never gets fixed. Sometimes the light stays on while at the shop, giving them nothing to fix. Then when we take it home, it goes out again. But, we actually like our Dealers repair dept very much! They just don't get help from Toyota. They have tried everything from new sockets to many new bulbs. We have spent a lot with them on this issue, but I know they have also donated a lot of time and money too. They are ashamed to charge because they know it is a recurring problem. They just can't fix it. I worry about my wife driving at night. She has been picked up by highway patrolmen 3 or 4 times because of the headlight being out. Our dealer even gave her a letter to show to the patrol that we have tried to fix it. So far no fines.

I did not fill in the # of times when the failure was observed since the sudden unintended acceleration happens to my car almost everyday. I have this car for a year now and still experiencing sudden acceleration at times when I slightly press the brakes and the car hits a small bump or pot hole, it accelerates. I almost hit a pedestrian in two incidences, and many times almost rear ended other cars. I complained to my dealer but they said they did not find anything wrong with my car. They have emailed an engineer from California about it. It's been a month and I did not hear from them yet. Does anyone have a solution about this matter? I do not want to get into a car accident or hit a pedestrian....

Prius C: The head lights are a serious safety concern. The lights are angled downward and visibility is extremely limited at night. On poorly lit roads use of high beams is required to see pedestrians or animals and on poorly lit freeways the white lane dividers can barely be seen. I've reported this to Toyota, but have not received a satisfactory response. Lives are at risk!

My husband was pulled over by a police officer while driving our recently purchased Prius. One of his headlights was not on. Since then the other headlight goes off as well. Passenger side head light went out in November, 2011, tried to replace bulb myself, took to dealer who replaced it "free, under warranty!" Now driver-side head light went out, called dealer, told no longer covered under warranty and referred to lawsuit which had Toyota not taking blame or doing a recall but extended warranty to 5 years, 50,000 miles. But my car was at 60,000 miles in November. Called dealer again and told that they did it as a "courtesy". Huh? Why? If they told me it wasn't covered but they were doing it as a courtesy, I would still be singing their praises. But instead, I feel I was lied to. So I took it to another dealer, repair cost $211. for about 5 minutes of work. From the lawsuit, I read that this can happen over and over again. My bf says that sometimes when I'm following him in my car, my light would randomly go out! Definately an expensive & dangerous problem w/ these great cars!!

    • Problem Description:
This is a well publicized problem.... What is ridiculous is that consumers are being talked into replacing headlight bulbs at $300+ per bulb..... when the problem randomly switches between sides.... obviously it is further back in the system circuit than the bulb... What is stupid is that any dealership should be fully aware of this problem and should not be putting customers through the expense of replacing the bulbs when THAT IS NOT THE PROBLEM.... Cycling the lights on and off most often brings both lights back on at least temporarily.... Even if that failed to work, you cannot be sure that the bulb is the issue.... because of the varying circumstances under which the problem has occurred from the beginning and across thousands of vehicles. It is ridiculous to arbitrarily decide that the problem ceases to be Toyota's concern after 50,000 miles.... either because such a failure "could be expected" in an older vehicle.... or because someone has erroneously concluded that the problem magically goes away after 50,000 miles... It is OBVIOUS that there is a major design flaw for THOUSANDS of vehicles to have the same problem..... I know there was already a class action suit that was settled.... but the settlement is ridiculously inadequate, and let Toyota walk away without admitting to any need for compensation.

    • Problem Description:
Last year with approximately 30000 miles on i,t the passenger side headlamp went out. I replaced it along with the driver side lamp. Today both lamps are out (low beam only) as well as the passenger side tail lamp. All other lights appear to be working, fuses are intact and turning it of and on doesn't solve the issue. There are a little over 45000 miles on it.
