A Volunteer Writes: Coco is a gorgeous four year old who was surrendered to the shelter along with Cheyenne, Tank and Tank, Jr. She has lived with other dogs, cats and young children. She appears to have raised a litter or two. Coco was upset by being ripped out of her home, separated from her housemates and put in to a shelter; but, she adapted and settled in. She has not given the staff or volunteers any problems and, in light of all of this, her safer is VERY puzzling. Coco did not do well on the food portion of her test and, surprisingly, she also did poorly on dog 2 dog. Because of this, Coco was taken out of adoptions and is New Hope partner only. Coco is the last member of the "family" still in the shelter. They have all been rescued or adopted, thankfully. Coco will not make it out alive without some help. She's a beautiful dog who is fun and loving. It would be a shame if this last family member did not make it out of the shelter alive. Please read ALL of her information, read the volunteer's loving comments and if you can foster/adopt her, please contact a New Hope partner.
Coco was surrendered to the care center with four other dogs, and the owner filled out only one profile. The previous owner states that Coco lived with 3 children under 13 and has lived with other dogs and cats.
Coco was a little tense during Look but was relaxed for the other handling items. She showed concerning behavior over the resources: growling over Food, attempting to bite over Toy, and her body was stiff when engaging with Rawhide. She rushed in toward the helper dog, body stiff, but showed no aggressive behavior.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor's hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, soft and loose body, open mouth, tail neutral.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw, ears back.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.
Food: 4. Dog growls.
Toy: 5. Dog attempts to bite.
Rawhide: 3. Dog's body is stiff.
Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog by rushing in with his tail high, stiff body.

For more information on adopting please read the following:

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.
For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.](https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/s480x480/1828_579113788768171_331958583_n.jpg)
