Time Is Running Out!

In most cases, unclaimed animals are euthanized, sometimes by gassing.

If you're considering adding a furry member to your family, please think of shelters and rescues first and save a life.

Please support Spay/Neuter Programs.

Adoption and Transportation information available on links.

I'm Sinclair, and I won the contest for Best Smile. Don't I get a ribbon or something?

Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) is a shelter system that kills one third of its animals, infects 100% of them with preventable disease, and abuses and terminates whistleblowing volunteers.

Part of the city's charade in feigning transparency is a yearly Board of Directors meeting. AC&C Board of Directors are all chosen "at the pleasure" of the mayor -- meaning all these people answer to Bloomberg and rubber stamp all policies. To show how little they care about public opinion, the board meetings are held for one hour in the middle of a workday. You can't even easily find the legally required public posting of the board meeting on the AC&C website -- the only way we found it was by searching their site for "board meeting": http://bit.ly/127MoHr.

This is one of the very few times AC&C management, (and the Department of Health officials who allow them to continue abusing animals) are forced to listen to members of the public.

Clide was found with his friend Bonny in a yard and brought together to the Manhattan Center. Both were lost and scared and wanted only one thing...to stay in their kennel. It took quite a bit of convincing to get them out but they did eventually. Clide is really a big guy. He walks cautiously and camly on the leash, eliminates on the way and presses his body against mine when he seems unsure of his next step. At times, he looks and puts his big head on his companion's chest. Clide is sociable, likes to be caressed and talked too. He was probably a yard dog but does not seem to mind dogs, people and children saying hello through the Center gate. Clide does not seem very interested in other dogs but does not mind their presence at all. As he meets Bonny in the yard, he just salutes her politely but voids next to where she did. I guess, their way to communicate...Clide is a beautiful dog, a Rotweiler with a twist...He has amazing markings, sweet eyes and gentle manners despite his size. It's hoped Bonny and Clide can find a home together where they can roam again, safe and loved. If they must be fostered/adopted individually that would be great too! These wonderful dogs need you to step up for them! You will fall in love.

Helper 965187 Clide came in to the shelter as a stray, but was accompanied by another dog (A965376). He was calm and relaxed during handling, but became distracted and focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Clide did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. He was not interested in toys or rawhide. Clide was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Look: 1. Dog's eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Squeeze 2 : 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go unnoticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

Misty is a spayed 5-year-old beauty whose former owners had her for the past 2 years. Misty lived with 3 adult humans and some other cats, but when "family changes" came a-calling, no one was willing to take Misty's back. This innocent loving girl was dumped into the ACC as if she didn't matter at all, and from the ACC point of view, she doesn't. Misty is just one more animal in their cage. Misty has been reduced to a name that might not really be her own, an ID number of A0965877, and a slot on the euth list tonight. Please make sure that Misty matters to someone again, by saving her life tonight.

Baby is a 10-year-old girl who has spent all of that time living with 4 adults, and she thought she had it made. Baby loved them and they loved Baby, but they didn't love Baby enough to take her with them when they moved. Whoever took Baby to the ACC and gave her up, would have been told that there was a chance this lovely lady could die in a few days' time, if no one else adopted her. That person paid the owner surrender fee and left a shattered Baby to face whatever fate had in store for her, all by her lonesome. Baby carries a New Hope rating because this lovely girl who used to hide from strangers in her old home, was overwhelmed with fear when strangers began menacing her in what we would call her "behavior evaluation." Baby is counting on a rescue to save her life tonight.

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the cat. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the cats’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the cat. This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how animals fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular cat, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

**CALLING ALL ANGELS: FELV+ JOE NEEDS IMMEDIATE RESCUE!**
Joe is breaking my heart tonight. Just look at that photo. He has wounds on his neck, a UTI, and on top of that, he has tested FELV+. Plum is another FELV+ cat on the list tonight, we should get both of these sweet boys out of here, maybe they could go together! Joe is going to need IMMEDIATE medical attention, and he needs to get out of the shelter AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please give Joe the second chance at life he desperately needs and completely deserves. We are his last hope. Please share Joe widely tonight, and if you have a home with no other pets or other cats with FELV, consider opening your home to him. You are his only hope tonight. Please save Joe.

Slick is an 8-month-old kitten who knows what it's like to suffer at the hands of so-called human beings. This sweet little girl came to the shelter on 5/20 with an old scabby wound that may have been a burn. She has been receiving some treatment from the ACC, but she also caught the shelter cold from them. Which is why this little girl is hoping that someone will step up for her tonight, hoping that she does not have to suffer the ultimate indignity of the way animals go out at the ACC. Slick may not be a cat with much history, but the only way she has a future is if we find one for her tonight.

**FELV+ PLUM HAS BEEN GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE -- AND HE GOT A PERFECT SCORE ON HIS BEHAVIOR EVAL!**
Poor Plum thought he was getting out of the shelter, until he was retested for FIV/FELV and it came back positive for FELV. Plum is going to have to be considered a special needs kitty that will have to go to a special home that will know how to care for him, and he will need to be with other FELV positive cats, or be the only pet in the home. Poor Plum is really getting the short end of the stick lately. But even through it all, this boy is STILL sweet as a PLUM! He earned a PERFECT score on his behavior evaluation, a 15 out of 15. He’s a headbutter, he purrs and loves affection. Please, if you are able to care for Plum and address his medical needs, please take this boy home tonight. I've heard of many FELV+ cats living long and happy lives, just like any other cat would, so give Plum a chance at a long and happy life too, because this is his last chance and he desperately needs YOU to step up for him. Please share Plum widely tonight, he needs to have the best possible chance at finding his forever home.

This is considered a "fake adoption" hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.

For more information on a particular dog, email adoption@nycacc.org but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates... the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.

DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff's time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. Flex is 15 years old and was surrendered to the Manhattan ACC with his housemate Isis :((( It's almost impossible to believe that two senior family pets were brought to a kill shelter and left; but, the reality is they were. The other reality is, Flex is on the destroy list tonight which adds insult to injury. He should not have to have his life ended according to a schedule. He shouldn't have to die feeling betrayed and scared. Flex is a great dog with an impressive SAFFER of all 1's and 2's. Flex has given his devotion to a family for a decade and a half, please save his life tonight. Share Flex for a foster or adopter, through the public adoption site, or through a rescue

05/23/2013 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION - AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Helper 965588 Flex was surrendered by his owner of fifteen years. He lived with three adults and another dog that is currently in the shelter with him (A966048). Although he has lived with another dog, flex may growl or bark at other dogs. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Flex was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He did not resist being handled while eating, and was easily pushed out of the food bowl. Flex was not interested in toys or rawhide. He was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor's cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted with relaxed body posture. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1 . Dog gently pulls back his paw. Food: 1. Dog calmly allows the food to be moved, follows the dish, but does not interfere with the dish's movement. Dog's body is soft and loose, eyes soft,. He lifts his head when hand is pushed against his cheek. Toy 1: No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with soft body, long lip and ears relaxed
